[Effect of TLT absorptive eyeglasses on progression of myopia in children].

The incidence of myopia is increasing worldwide. At the last VIIIth international conference on myopia held in June 2000 in Boston attention was aroused by the work of Quin et al. on the influence of noctural illumination in rooms where children slept on their subsequent development of myopia. Our working hypothesis presented in Hakone in 1996 presumes also a negative effect of light and heat which initiate the development of myopia but on eyes with an inborn disposition. We considered as a solution wearing spectacles with glass which allow to penetrate only visible light and absorb the other

Brønsted acid sites in MCM-22 zeolite as molecular "Grippers" to NH3 and potassium for boosting NH3-SCR performance and resistance to alkali.

The selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) with NH3 (NH3-SCR) in alkali-rich industrial flue gases (e.g., cement kilns) remains a pivotal challenge in environmental catalysis. Herein, we report a layered CeMoOx/MCM-22 catalyst that achieves > 80 % NOx conversion and > 95 % N2 selectivity over a broad temperature window of 250-530 °C, and crucially maintains > 80 % conversion even after exposure to 1 wt% K2O (a typical alkali metal poison in industrial flue gases). Combined in situ characterizations (X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier t

Enhanced Solubility of Albendazole in Cyclodextrin Inclusion Complex: A Molecular Modeling Approach and Physicochemical Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Albendazole (ABZ) is the drug of choice for the treatment of a variety of human and veterinary parasites. However, it has low aqueous solubility and low bioavailability. Cyclodextrins (CD) are pharmaceutical excipients with the ability to modulate the solubilization property of hydrophobic molecules. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to analyze through in vitro and in silico studies (Autodock Vina software and CycloMolder platform) the formation of inclusion complexes between ABZ, β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and its derivatives Methyl-β-cyclodextrin (M-β-CD) and Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclod

Multiscale Femoral Neck Imaging and Multimodal Trabeculae Quality Characterization in an Osteoporotic Bone Sample.

Although multiple structural, mechanical, and molecular factors are definitely involved in osteoporosis, the assessment of subregional bone mineral density remains the most commonly used diagnostic index. In this study, we characterized bone quality in the femoral neck of one osteoporotic patients as compared to an age-matched control subject, and so used a multiscale and multimodal approach including X-ray computed microtomography at different spatial resolutions (pixel size: 51.0, 4.95 and 0.9 µm), microindentation and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Our results showed abnormalities

Spectroscopic Studies of Mössbauer, Infrared, and Laser-Induced Luminescence for Classifying Rare-Earth Minerals Enriched in Iron-Rich Deposits.

Rare-earth (RE) phosphates often appear as an accessory phase in igneous or metamorphic rocks; however, these rocks are composed of myriad chemical elements and nuclides that interfere with the qualitative or quantitative analyses of the RE phosphates over a range of concentrations in the absence of a pretreatment. In addition, the limit of each analytical methodology constrains the approach as well as the usefulness of the results in geoscience applications. Here, we report the specific mineral characterization of RE-containing ores from Yen Phu mine, Vietnam, using a range of state-of-the-ar

Human Fall Detection with Infrared Imaging: A Comparison of Graph Convolutional Networks and YOLO.

This paper presents a comparative study of two artificial intelligence approaches-graph convolutional networks (GCNs) and the YOLO object detection algorithm-for analyzing human fall events using infrared imaging. From the AI perspective, the study introduces a GCN model that achieves over 99% classification accuracy by modeling 2D and 3D skeletal data as graph structures and evaluates the real-time detection capabilities of YOLOv8 on infrared video frames. On the engineering side, the research addresses practical challenges in elderly care and healthcare monitoring systems by demonstrating ho

Excited-State Conformational Dynamics Enables Visible-Light-Activated Near-Infrared Phosphorescent Nano-Assemblies for Bioimaging.

Visible-light-excited near-infrared ultralong organic phosphorescence (NIR-UOP), has attracted increasing attention due to its unique advantages. However, the development of efficient NIR-UOP systems remains challenging. In this study, we propose a rational molecular design strategy to achieve visible-light-excited (λex = 450 nm) NIR-UOP via excited-state conformational dynamics. The optimized molecule, py-2mNO2, exhibits NIR-UOP emission at 635 and 700 nm, with a high phosphorescence intensity of 12 cd/m2 and a lifetime of 268 ms. Mechanistic studies reveal that the dynamic conformational cha

Hypoxia-responsive paclitaxel prodrugs: linker evaluation and NIR-triggered self-amplifying photodynamic-chemotherapy nanoplatform.

Hypoxia-responsive prodrugs have emerged as a promising strategy for tumor-selective therapy, however, the optimization of responsive linker to maximize drug release efficiency remains critical. In this work, we systematically designed and successfully synthesized five structurally distinct hypoxia-responsive paclitaxel (PTX) prodrugs, identifying the 5-nitrofuryl alcohol (NFA)-modified PTX-NFA as the most efficient prodrug, with nearly complete prodrug reduction (>99%) and PTX release under hypoxic conditions. A hypoxia-responsive nanotherapeutic platform (PC-Ir@PTX-NFA NPs) combining photody

Disruption of Bacterial Biofilms by Photothermal Energy to Overcome Antibiotic Resistant Phenotype.

INTRODUCTION: There is an unmet need to effectively clear bacterial biofilms, which often cause infections with an antibiotic-resistant phenotype. Biofilms pose an especially acute challenge for combat wound care, as these injuries are often characterized by complex tissue damage that complicates current debridement-based treatment protocols. Targeted localized temperature elevation has been shown to be an effective approach to disrupt cellular membranes. Here, the researchers demonstrated the use of near infrared (NIR) irradiation of gold nanomaterials to elicit the conversion of light to hea

Infrared exposure improves human colour vision undermined by LED light.

Life evolved under sunlight (200-4000nm). Incandescent lighting was similar (200-3000nm). But modern light-emitting diodes (LED) produce only a narrow band of visible light (400-700nm), eliminating >90% of the solar spectrum. Light impacts life, partly through mitochondrial modulation with different wavelengths triggering opposing metabolic responses. Longer red/infrared wavelengths (650-1000nm) improve metabolism and ageing patterns, while blue light (420-450nm) undermines these processes. The retina has the highest metabolic rate in the body and the greatest density of mitochondria. Hence, v

Infrared Thermography for Temperature Measurement in Adult Female C57BL/6NCrl Mice: A Comparison with Rectal Probe and Subcutaneous Transponder.

Body temperature is an easily measured clinical parameter that provides important information about an animal's health and welfare. In the context of animal experiments, temperature monitoring provides relevant data needed to manage animal care and has been embraced as a means of assessing humane endpoints. At the same time, temperature measurement in the sense of the 3Rs (Replacement, Refinement, and Reduction) should not cause any additional pain or distress to the animals. Therefore, the use of noninvasive, accurate, and cost-effective methods for temperature monitoring is of great importan

Manipulation of magnetic edge states in carbon quantum dots for magnetic resonance imaging and NIR-II photo-thermoelectric therapy.

The magnetic quantum phenomena triggered by electrons in carbon-based materials are challenging to decipher and exploit, thus sparking extensive research interest. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs), emerging candidates in nanomedicine, exhibit fascinating behaviors related to electron spin, relaxation, and migration. Herein, we report a magnetic edge state structure within nonmetallic CQDs that generates nitrogen hyperfine splitting at room temperature. Furthermore, a series of near-infrared (NIR) absorption bandgaps are produced based on spin-orbit coupling and dipole-dipole interactions, exhibiting

CathCam-Guided Picosecond Infrared Laser Ablation in Peripheral Artery Disease Revascularization.

OBJECTIVE: Endovascular revascularization of peripheral arterial occlusions has a high technical failure rate of 15-20%, mainly due to difficulties in crossing the occlusion with a guidewire. This study evaluates the use of a Picosecond mid-Infrared Laser (PIRL) to facilitate occlusion crossing. METHODS: Popliteal artery lesion samples were obtained from a donated limb of a patient with critical limb ischemia (CLI). A customized system advanced the PIRL fiber at controlled speeds toward the occlusion. The fiber was tested with its source OFF and ON at either 500 mW or 1000 mW power, 2.96 µm w

Transmission of NIR Radiation Through Multi-layer Mouse Head at Scalp Skin Optical Clearing.

Theoretical and experimental studies of infrared radiation transmission through the upper part of the mouse head-including the scalp, skull, gray matter, and white matter-with optical clearing of the skin are presented. Using known scattering and absorption coefficients, along with experimentally determined geometric parameters and their changes during the optical clearing process, Monte Carlo simulations were carried out for a four-layer mouse head model. Radiation transport within the tissue was described using the Bethe-Salpeter equation. Simulations were performed for two infrared waveleng
