Forty patients with plasma cell dyscrasias underwent high-dose chemoradiotherapy and either anti-B-cell monoclonal antibody (MoAb)-treated autologous, anti-T-cell MoAb-treated HLA-matched sibling allogeneic or syngeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT). Five patients (six courses) with refractory idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) were given 6 million units of recombinant interferon (IFN) alpha-2b in 12 doses to achieve an improved response rate compared to previous studies using 3 million units. We retrospectively analyzed our treatment of men with anogenital condylomata acuminata (CA) at Hennepin County Medical Center and the University of Minnesota. A method is suggested for treatment of benign processes of uterine cervix, associated with papillomavirus infection, in nonparous women. The method consists in applying glycerin to the mucous membrane of the vulva and vagina for 10 to 12 days before local application of 5-fluorouracilum, and use of vaginal suppositories plus interferon alpha-2 beta following the course of treatment with cytostatics. The clinical features of two patients with hairy cell leukemia involving the mediastinum are described. Both patients presented with acute chest pain 2-3 months prior to diagnosis being made. In one patient mediastinal disease was recorded only by computerized tomography of the thorax. There was good response of mediastinal disease to alpha-interferon in both patients, in spite of persisting bone marrow involvement with hairy cell leukemia.

In autoimmune thyroid disease lymphoid cells infiltrating the thyroid gland occur in conspicuous aggregates or as a diffusely distributed population invading the thyroid follicles. Chronic hepatitis C infection is common among hemophiliacs in all the developed countries. Since 1996, only alpha-interferon (alpha-IFN) in monotherapy has been used for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C in hemophiliacs (6 patients). In Czech Republic a combination therapy with alpha-IFN and ribavirin has been used since 1999 (13 patients). The present paper summarizes 13-years our center's experience in the treatment of essential thrombocythemia (ET). We analyzed a group of 36 patients treated with busulphan (Bu), 16 with hydroxyurea (HU) and 4 with interferon alpha (INF alpha). The results of therapy were assessed using proposed self-defined criteria of ET remission. Inbred strains of mice differ considerably in their innate resistance to leishmanial infection. BALB/c mice are highly susceptible to cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania major, whereas CBA mice are resistant.
