Based on the in vitro and in vivo potentiation of the cytotoxic activity of chemotherapeutic agents by the interferons, a pilot study combining human recombinant alpha-2b interferon (IFN) and doxorubicin was conducted for the treatment of unresectable, histologically proven hepatocellular carcinoma. In the present studies, the long term effects of IFN alpha on thyroid function and thyroid autoantibodies were evaluated in 42 patients with chronic viral hepatitis type C treated with IFN alpha for at least 4 months. In the present paper we described the first case report of silent thyroiditis following alpha-interferon (IFN-alpha) treatment for chronic type C hepatitis in Japan. alpha-Interferon, 3 x 10(6) U/m2 every other day, and dacarbazine, up to 800 mg/m2 every 3 weeks, were given to nine patients with metastatic malignant melanoma who had progressed on a combination of interleukin-2 and dacarbazine. We report the case of a 14-year-old girl that was referred to the maxillo facial surgery unit at age 11 years because she exhibited swelling in the right side of her maxilla and right mandible.
