Female dyspareunia.

This descriptive study presents 230 women with the chief or major complaint of pain during intercourse. The patients were assessed according to the medical model with careful screening for intrapersonal (intrapsychic), interpersonal (relationship), and physical factors that contributed to the patient's discomfort. Each patient had a careful pelvic examination to clarify the physical and physiologic factors which contributed to the patient's discomfort. Each total assessment attempted to identify the primary source of the patient's complaint. Sixty-two patients were seen as primarily having an

The patient's personal and family dynamics are explored, and these major therapeutic themes are discussed. The individual and milieu therapy are describe

Emotions and interpersonal relationships: toward a person-centered conceptualization of emotions and coping.

This essay describes my theory of emotions. I make a case for studying discrete emotions in the context of four processes that represent the … in the form of a case study to demonstrate how emotions can best be understood in the context of an interpersonal relationship and by considering individual differences, interpersonal transactions, and relational meaning. I conclude this essay with a caution that field specialization may interfere with our understanding of emotions and other psychological phenomena, and …

Stress-coping strategies and interpersonal characteristics in ineffective maternal adaptation after childbirth: a pilot case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal adaptation after childbirth represents a complex psychological process that significantly influences maternal well-being, mother-infant interaction, and long-term child development. While postpartum depression and post-traumatic stress disorder have been extensively studied, less attention has been given to early stress-coping patterns and interpersonal characteristics associated with adjustment difficulties. METHODS: This pilot case-control study included 104 women within the first postpartum year. Fifty seven women diagnosed with adjustment disorder (ICD-10: F43.2) form

Dyadic examination of rumination and depressive symptoms in Chinese heterogeneous young couples: the differential role of gender.

INTRODUCTION: The relationship between rumination and depressive symptoms has been extensively studied over the past two decades. However, few studies have explored how rumination contributes to depressive symptoms within the context of heterogeneous romantic relationships, particularly regarding potential gender differences in these effects. The present study aims to investigate whether rumination is related to four key factors of depressive symptoms (i.e., depressed affect, positive affect, somatic and retarded activity, interpersonal distress) both on the intrapersonal and interpersonal lev

Affective Instability and Emotion Dysregulation as a Social Impairment.

Borderline personality disorder is a complex psychopathological phenomenon. It is usually thought to consist in a vast instability of different aspects that are central to our experience of the world, and to manifest as "a pervasive pattern of instability of interpersonal relationships, self-image, and affects, and marked impulsivity" [American Psychiatric Association (APA), 2013, p. 663]. Typically, of the instability triad-instability in (1) self, (2) affect and emotion, and (3) interpersonal relationships-only the first two are described, examined, and conceptualized from an experiential po…

Intimate Partner Sexual Violence: An Often Overlooked Problem.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner sexual violence (IPSV) is a common but often overlooked form of intimate partner violence (IPV) that may have unique consequences for those who experience it. We aimed to explore how outcomes associated with IPSV differ from outcomes associated with other forms of intimate partner and sexual violence. METHODS: We conducted a narrative review of the English-language literature, including original research studies and reports that focused on outcomes associated with IPSV. We aimed to quantify the risk for health outcomes associated with exposure to IPSV in compariso

A qualitative investigation of the relapse experiences of women with bulimia nervosa.

This study presents a qualitative analysis of relapse experiences of 26 women with bulimia nervosa who were recruited from Overeaters Anonymous. Using focus groups and individual interviews, participants reported conditions that activated binge eating and/or purging as triggers and described their attempts to manage triggers as an intense effort to arbitrate between high-risk circumstances and their capacity to avoid binging and purging. Responses revealed two broad categories of triggers: (1) internal emotional states and (2) interpersonal relationships. Sixty-one percent of the triggers were…

Psychosocial factors affecting simulated and actual space missions.

As space missions become longer and broader in scope, and as crews become more heterogeneous, psychological and interpersonal factors will take on increasing importance. In order to isolate instructive psychosocial issues and trends, a review was made of over 60 American and Russian simulation and spaceflight studies and reports. Although the missions accomplished most of their goals, psychological and social stresses were evident in the crew members. Psychosocial problems tended to relate to mission length. There was evidence that the use of appropriate psychological testing and interpersonal

An interactive view of countertransference: Differentiation of self and client presentation.

Using family systems theory (Kerr & Bowen, 1988), interpersonal theory (Kiesler, 1996; Leary, 1957), and the interactional theory of countertransference (CT; Gelso & Hayes, 2007) as a framework, we investigated the influences of therapist personal factors (differentiation of self in relation to the family of origin; DoS) and client presentation as predictors of CT feelings and behaviors in response to a video analog client. Therapist-participants viewed either an interpersonally hostile-submissive or interpersonally hostile-dominant (HD) client. Overall, therapists lower in DoS reported signif

Couples' experiences of grandparenthood: Grandchild-related bliss and psychological well-being.

Building on family systems theory and lifespan views on aging, the present study investigates how the experiences of grandchild-related bliss (i.e., the subjective fulfillment and joy of having a grandchild) are related to grandparental couples' partnership-related and general well-being. We hypothesized both (a) actor effects (i.e., a grandparent's grandchild-related bliss is positively associated with this grandparent's well-being) and (b) partner effects (i.e., a grandparent's grandchild-related bliss is positively associated with the partner's well-being). We used the actor-partner interde

Problem Gambling Transmission. An Eight-wave Longitudinal Study on Problem Gambling Among Affected Others.

There is growing recognition that those close to someone with problem gambling experience stress and strain. Research suggests they may also be at risk of developing gambling problems themselves, but this remains an underexplored area. The present study examined how exposure to problem gambling within family or friend networks relates to affected others' own gambling, and whether strong social connections reduce this risk. Using an eight-wave longitudinal dataset (N = 1530) with hybrid multilevel regression modeling, we analyzed within-person and between-person effects of exposure to a family

Friend or foe? Postdivorce hostility among recently divorced individuals.

High levels of hostility often occur during and postdivorce and may significantly affect the quality of life, parent-child relationships, and social functioning of divorcees. Moreover, hostility may predict aggressive and violent behavior. This study sought to (a) compare average general hostility levels of a large sample of Danish divorcees to the norms of the general adult Danish population, (b) compare general hostility levels between male and female divorcees, and (c) investigate the explanatory value of various sociodemographic and divorce-related factors on postdivorce general hostility

Trajectories of birth family contact in domestic adoptions.

Emotional distance regulation theory (Broderick, 1993; Grotevant, 2009) guided this examination of the changes in family structure and process in adoptive kinship networks experiencing different arrangements of contact between birth and adoptive family members. Group-based trajectory modeling was used to reveal four trajectories of postadoption contact experienced between adoptive and birth family members in adoptive kinship networks of same-race, domestic infant adoptions. Data were drawn from the Minnesota Texas Adoption Research Project, a study of 190 adoptive families and 169 birth mother
