[Strongyloidosis in Canavese: 4 cases seen at the 'Ospedale di Ivrea-Castellamonte. Epidemiological and clinical considerations].

From May 1988 to September 1990 the microbiology laboratory of the Ivrea-Castellamonte Hospital (Province of Turin) carried out 1464 coproparasitological investigations. 0.5% of the samples, coming from 5 patients, proved to be Strongyloides stercoralis positive. 4 cases were diagnosed in recovery conditions, and on these we carried out a retrospective study (taking into consideration some epidemiological and clinical aspects). The average age of these patients, three men and one woman, was 70.5; all native of the Canavese and resident in agricultural zones; two farmers still working, a worker

Intestinal neuronal density in childhood: a baseline for the objective assessment of hypo- and hyperganglionosis.

In the absence of reliable baseline data for normal neuron density in the intestine, the diagnosis of hypo- and hyperganglionosis is purely subjective. This study has established the normal neuron density by neuron counts in paraffin sections taken both transversely (transverse sections, TS) and longitudinally (longitudinally sections, LS) in relation to the long axis of normal postmortem jejunum, ileum, and colon from 21 children (aged 4 weeks to 10 years). Intestine from two adults (aged 16 and 42 years) and colon alone from a further six adults (aged 16 to 83 years) were also studied. The m

Use of Mixed-Oil Fat Emulsion to Improve Intestinal Failure-Associated Liver Disease in Long-Term Home Parenteral Nutrition: A Case Report.

Home parenteral nutrition (HPN) is a life-saving therapy for patients who are not able to use their gastrointestinal tract. There are a number of complications associated with HPN, including metabolic bone disease, intestinal failure-associated liver disease (IFALD), and catheter-related bloodstream infections. We present a case of a 32-year-old HPN patient who initially developed biopsy-proven IFALD (total bilirubin, 2.4 mg/dL) while on long-term HPN. His HPN was initiated due to myopathic intestinal dysmotility and pseudo-obstruction when he was 15 years old. Because of his IFALD, the intrav

Lupus Enteritis: Presentation as an Apparent Surgical Emergency - A Case Report.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease with varied organ involvement. Gastrointestinal (GI) involvement in SLE is common, with oral mucosal lesions being the most frequently seen. Acute abdomen as a surgical emergency in SLE patients can have multiple causes. Lupus enteritis (LE)/Intestinal pseudo-obstruction (IPO) can present as acute abdomen, thereby requiring surgical reference. We hereby present a case of SLE presenting with acute abdomen due to LE/IPO, which prompted the surgeon for surgical intervention. Timely diagnosis and prompt response to steroids lead to resolu…

Engrafted nitrergic neurons derived from hPSCs improve gut dysmotility in mice.

Gastrointestinal (GI) motility disorders represent a major medical challenge, with few effective therapies available. These disorders often result from dysfunction of inhibitory nitric oxide (NO)-producing motor neurons in the enteric nervous system, which are essential for regulating gut motility. Loss or dysfunction of NO neurons is linked to severe conditions, including achalasia, gastroparesis, intestinal pseudo-obstruction and chronic constipation1,2. Here we introduce a platform based on human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) for therapeutic development targeting GI motility disorders. Usi…

[Diagnostic problems in a 17-year-old patient with gastrointestinal manifestations of Fabry disease].

Fabry disease is a rare X-linked recessive lysosomal storage disorder caused by deficiency of lysosomal enzyme alpha-galactosidase, which leads to accumulation of globotriasylceramides (GL-3) in visceral tissues and vascular endothelium, causing multi-organ failure. We presenta case of Fabry disease in a 17-year-old patient with mainly gastrointestinal manifestations, diagnosed 10 years after the manifestation of first symptoms. Significant and progressive weight loss with abdominal pain and vomiting, leading to cachexia, were observed in early childhood. The patient was investigated for non-i

Diagnostic challenges of hypoganglionosis based on immunohistochemical method.

BACKGROUND: Hypoganglionosis resembles Hirschsprung's disease as in both diseases, patients may present with severe constipation or pseudo-obstruction. To date, diagnosis of hypoganglionosis is still difficult to be established due to lack of international consensus regarding diagnostic criteria. This study aims to evaluate the use of immunohistochemistry to provide objective support for our initial subjective impression of hypoganglionosis as well as to describe the morphological features of this study. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study. Three resected intestinal samples from patients

Acquired diverticular disease of the jejunum and ileum: imaging features and pitfalls.

RESULTS: Jejunoileal diverticulosis is a relatively rare and underestimated condition, which mostly affects the elderly. It is frequently asymptomatic but it can lead to significant complications requiring surgical treatment. Jejunoileal diverticulosis is far less common than colonic diverticulosis. Acquired small bowel diverticula are often numerous but the complication rate is low. Benign spontaneous pneumoperitoneum in systemic sclerosis.

The gastrointestinal tract is commonly involved in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) (Am J Gastroenterol. 1972;58:30-44). Intestinal manifestations of SSc include impaired motility, malabsorption, bacterial overgrowth, jejunal and wide-mouthed colonic diverticuli, localized dilatation, pseudo-obstruction, and, less commonly, pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) (Rheumatology. 2009;48:iii36-iii39; J Clin Gastroenterol. 2008;42:5-12). Benign spontaneous pneumoperitoneum is a rare complication of SSc and is often associated with PCI (Mo Med. 1967;64:117-118). We report a case of spontane

A prospective study was undertaken of 124 patients with clinico-physiological diagnoses of chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction, enteric dysmotility and severe irritable bowel syndrome undergoing LFTB in three European teaching centres with expertise in the management of gastrointestinal neuromuscular disorders.
