A note on the determination of thorium in the presence of some bivalent metal ions.

A new method for complexometric determination of thorium in the presence of bivalent metals without their masking is presented. Two aliquots of metal solution are necessary. In one the sum of the thorium and other metals is determined by DTPA titration. The second aliquot is treated with Zn(2)TTHA complex. Only thorium, forming a 1:1 complex with TTHA, displaces twice its molar amount of zinc from the complex, while other elements displace only an equimolar amount of zinc. The amount of thorium corresponds to the difference of consumption in the two titrations.

Cerium-Modified Diatom Biosilica for Lithium-Ion Anodes.

Diatom frustules offer hierarchically porous biosilica templates for sustainable electrode design; however, their low electrical conductivity and limited electrochemically accessible sites constrain lithium-storage performance. In this study, a two-stage cultivation strategy was used to introduce Ce-related species into Cyclotella cryptica frustules, followed by purification and pyrolysis to obtain Ce-functionalized biosilica/carbon anodes. Ce-200 provided the best balance among biological tolerance, cerium enrichment, structural retention, pore evolution, and electrochemical performance. SEM,

Landscaping dual-ion batteries architected by MXene materials.

Low-temperature rechargeable batteries are crucial for energy storage under subzero conditions but remain limited by sluggish ion transport, severe interfacial polarization, and slow charge-transfer kinetics. Dual-ion batteries (DIBs), employing both cations and anions as charge carriers, offer fast ion-storage kinetics and reduced desolvation barriers, yet practical applications are hindered by sluggish dual-ion diffusion, electrolyte incompatibility, and poorly understood interfacial processes. MXene materials, owing to their layered architectures, chemically tunable surfaces, and adjustable…

Directional Confinement Governed Ion Transport for Efficient Actuation.

Ionic transport kinetics in electrolytes are a key determinant of ionic actuator performance. Conventional random porous electrolytes are constrained by porosity and tortuosity, leading to an intrinsic limitation in ion mobility within the Bruggeman framework. Here, structural anisotropy is introduced to establish a unified framework that analyzes ion transport from random diffusion to directionally confined regimes. To validate this concept, anisotropic electrolytes with oriented channels are fabricated via directional freeze-drying. These structures exhibit pronounced directional dependence,

Research progress of electrolytes for aqueous zinc-ion batteries.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are emerging as promising electrochemical energy-storage systems because of their intrinsic safety, material abundance, and sustainability. Among the key battery components, the electrolyte plays a pivotal role in governing ion transport behavior, interfacial chemistry, and overall electrochemical performance. Nevertheless, traditional aqueous electrolytes are often accompanied by parasitic side reactions, including zinc corrosion, dendritic deposition, and water-induced hydrogen evolution, which undermine cycling stability and reversibility. This review pres…

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are attractive for safe and sustainable energy storage, but their operation in cold environments remains c … rspective. We first outline how HB reorganization, Zn2+ solvation structure and ion-solvent interactions collectively govern freezing behaviour, transport kinetics and interfacial reactions. We then survey representative design strategies, including concentration-driven electrolytes, organic co-solvents, eutectic systems and anti-freeze hydrogels, to s …

Ion Crowding Effect in Unilaterally Downsized Perovskite Memristors.

Minimizing the footprint of individual cells in a memristor array is crucial for increasing packing density, reducing power consumption and … istribution, leading to distinct switching behaviors and morphological deformation including protrusions and indentations. Further downsizing the critical dimension of memristors to 30 nm intensifies the crowding effect, resulting in anisotropic switching characteristics and unique "hole-in-a-bump" surface feature. This study offers insight into the fi …

Ion-size-dependent electroconvective transport in confined channels.

Electroconvective flow near ion-selective surfaces is a fundamental phenomenon in electrochemistry that has attracted significant attention across disciplines such as membrane science, drug delivery, and ion transport. Despite this interest, a comprehensive understanding of electroconvective transport across the transition from weakly to strongly confined channels remains elusive. In this study, we investigate electroconvective transport in charged confined channels containing an embedded ion-selective membrane using direct numerical simulations. The Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations are modifie…

Water-Mediated Ion Selectivity in 2D MXene Channels.

At the Ångström scale, water confined between two-dimensional layers behaves fundamentally differently from bulk water; this behavior governs ion transport in natural and engineered nanofluidic systems, yet the mechanisms by which confined water mediates selective ion transport remain poorly understood. As classical descriptions of aqueous ion transport break down under extreme confinement, experimental studies often face challenges in controlling both nanoconfined structure and surface chemistry, limiting our ability to explain and predict water and ion behavior in subnanometer channels and m…

Ion-dependent nanomechanics and molecular organization in quatsome membranes.

Quatsomes (QS) are highly stable unilamellar nanovesicles formed by the self-assembly of quaternary ammonium surfactants and sterols. Despite their growing potential as nanocarriers, the molecular determinants of QS membrane structure and mechanics remain poorly understood, limiting the rational design of optimized formulations. Here, we investigate the effect of surfactant chain length, counterion identity, and solution ionic content on the structural and nanomechanical properties of cholesterol-based QS membranes assembled from alkyltrimethylammonium (CnTA+) salts. Supported bilayers and mul…

Robustness evaluation of carbon ion radiotherapy for ventricular tachycardia.

Favorable clinical outcomes of carbon-ion radiotherapy (CIRT) for ventricular arrhythmia have been reported, and optimal treatment strategies are being explored. We assessed the robustness of CIRT plans against cardiac motion in ventricular tachycardia. Electrocardiographic (ECG)-gated computed tomography (CT) images at end-diastole and end-systole were used for planning, and dose distributions were recalculated on the opposite phase to evaluate dosimetric changes. Cardiac motion reduced target coverage by about 13.8-19.0%, whereas a 5-mm margin or robust optimization reduced the decrease appr…

The Redesign of the Molecular Scaffold of Viral Ion Channel Blockers.

The rise of rapidly mutating viruses poses growing challenges for drug developers in the fight against antiviral resistance. Viral ion channels generally have low mutation rates and are therefore considered emerging targets for a sustainable solution to the problem of resistance. This study reports the redesign of scaffolds for drug candidates targeting viral ion channels. The redesign was powered by a combination of a computational docking protocol that accounts for water molecules (HydroDock) and a subsequent quantum mechanics-based scoring (QMH-L) of the drug candidates. Extending the antiv

Photoinduced Ion Pair Generator Based on Triangle Terarylene.

Photoresponsive systems capable of generating ion pairs provide promising opportunities for light-controlled catalysts, yet the structural factors governing ion-pair formation and stability remain poorly understood. Here we report a series of terarylene derivatives (1o-3o) that undergo photoinduced cyclization to generate ion pairs with distinct reactivity profiles. Spectroscopic studies combined with density functional theory calculations reveal that ion-pair formation strongly depends on the leaving group and solvent polarity. While 1o readily generates a highly stable cationic species upon …

Determinants for Activation of the Ion Channel TRPV3 by Weak Acids.

Several transient receptor potential vanilloid (TRPV) ion channels are proton-sensitive, and recent structural studies have identified poorly conserved mechanisms for the proton sensitivity of TRPV1, TRPV2 and TRPV5. While such detailed studies are lacking for TRPV3, three distinct intracellular motifs were suggested to be required for a direct channel activation by cytosolic acidification. In this study, we investigated if these mechanisms are also relevant for the activation of TRPV3 by weak acids. Wildtype (WT) and several mutants of human TRPV3 transiently expressed in HEK 293T cells were
