Iron deficiency is the leading cause of anaemia and is highly prevalent in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). Iron deficiency, with or without anaemia, can be corrected with intravenous (i.v.) iron therapy. In heart failure patients, iron status screening, diagnosis, and treatment of iron deficiency with ferric carboxymaltose are recommended by the 2016 European Society of Cardiology guidelines, based on results of two randomized controlled trials in CHF patients with iron deficiency. All i.v. iron complexes consist of a polynuclear Fe(III)-oxyhydroxide/oxide core that is stabilized wi

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency is the most prevalent nutrient deficiency and the most common cause of anaemia worldwide. Because of the increased iron requirements during pregnancy, iron deficiency can lead to maternal anaemia and reduced newborn iron stores. We examined the proportion and risk factors of iron deficiency among pregnant women in a developed Asian country.
METHODS: Within a prospective cohort in Singapore, 985 Asian women were assessed for iron status at 26-28 weeks' gestation, with plasma ferritin and soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR) measurements. Iron status was determined ac

Haemosiderin deposition in the legs of patients with venous leg ulcers is well established, and several theories suggest this stored iron has a role in disease pathophysiology. In this novel pilot study of patients with chronic venous leg ulcers, we aimed to establish the relationship between wound fluid iron levels, serum iron parameters and healing. Fifteen patients with venous ulcers were included in the study. Blood samples were taken for full blood count and iron studies, while simultaneously wound fluid was obtained from the wound surface using filter paper. Wound areas were measured at

BACKGROUND: Recent studies found a low rate of iron deficiency in Bangladeshi non-pregnant and non-lactating women. This was attributed to high iron concentrations in drinking water. However, there are limited data on iron deficiency among pregnant women in Bangladesh.
OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to investigate the prevalence of anemia, iron deficiency, and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) among rural pregnant women and explore the association of groundwater iron concentration with anemia and iron deficiency in this group.
METHODS: This study used data from a baseline assessment of an intervention s

OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that moderate iron deficiency among children is associated with lower likelihood of infection.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We use data from a population representative cross sectional study of 1164 Tanzanian children aged 6-59 months from the Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey. Respondents' iron levels were assessed through serum transferrin receptor (sTfR) and anemia was assessed using hemoglobin. C-reactive protein (CRP) was used as a marker of infection.
RESULTS: Nearly 25% of the children were categorized as normal (iron replete, non-anemic); 45% were ID

INTRODUCTION: Nutritional anaemia in India is common morbidity seen in late adolescent and young female population. There are many conflicting opinions regarding dosage of iron folic acid supplementation for managing this simple nutritional deficiency disorder. Hence, this 'Randomized Controlled Trial' was undertaken in adolescent girls suffering from Iron Deficiency Anaemia visiting 'Urban Health and Training Centre' situated in urban slum area. The aim of this study was to assess the (a) Impact of weekly iron folic acid supplementation in comparison with daily iron supplementation for the ma

INTRODUCTION: In inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is a very common disorder. Until recently, oral iron has been the mainstay therapy, nevertheless it has been associated with intolerance and noncompliance. Therefore, the goal of our study was to evaluate the efficacy of intravenous iron in IDA in IBD patients and the secondary aim was to investigate whether other potencial factors could influence in the response to the treatment.
DESIGN: An open-label, prospective, consecutive, single centre study.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed our study in patients with ulc

Anemia is a common complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in predialysis stage. Iron deficiency is more common than in normal patients and plays a key role in the genesis of anemia. Its correction avoids the use of erythropoiesis stimulating agents (ESA) or reduces their dosage. Treatment with oral iron is often poorly tolerated and ineffective, necessitating the use of intravenous iron. New forms of injectable iron allow the use of high doses and correct iron deficiency in a single administration with consequent preservation of venous capital and lower costs. We studied the effectivenes

Ferumoxytol is an intravenous iron preparation for treatment of the anemia of chronic kidney disease (CKD). It is a carbohydrate-coated, superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticle. Because little free iron is present in the preparation, doses of 510 mg have been administered safely in as little as 17 seconds. Two prospective, randomized studies compared two doses of ferumoxytol 510 mg given in 5 +/- 3 days with 3 weeks of oral iron 200 mg/day (as ferrous fumarate) in anemic patients with CKD. One study enrolled 304 patients with stages 1-5 CKD (predialysis), and the other study enrolled 230 pat

UNLABELLED: Porphyria cutanea tarda is a liver disease characterized by elevated hepatic iron and excessive production of uroporphyrin (URO). Phlebotomy is an effective treatment that probably acts by reducing hepatic iron. Here we used Hfe(-/-) mice to compare the effects on hepatic URO accumulation of two different methods of hepatic iron depletion: iron chelation using deferiprone (L1) versus iron-deficient diets. Hfe(-/-) mice in a 129S6/SvEvTac background were fed 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), which results in hepatic URO accumulation, and increasing doses of L1 in the drinking water. Hepa

BACKGROUND: Iron-deficiency anemia is a frequent complication in children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Parenteral iron therapy is rarely prescribed because of concern about potential side effects. The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the safety and efficacy of total dose intravenous (TDI) iron therapy.
METHODS: Charts of all the pediatric patients with IBD who received TDI iron therapy between February of 1994 and February of 2000 were reviewed.
RESULTS: Seventy patients (20 with ulcerative colitis and 50 with Crohn disease) received a total of 119 TDI iron dextran

Treadmill experiments were performed with calves fed milkreplacer (MR) containing 8, 18, 52, or 86 mg of iron (Fe)/kg during the fattening period. Calves walked at 1 m/s for 10 min and then recovered for 15 min. Calves fed 8 and 18 mg of Fe/kg of MR developed severe hypoferraemia and anaemia whereas plasma (PFe) and haemoglobin (Hb) concentration, erythrocyte number (EC) and packed cell volume (PCV) in calves fed 52 and 86 mg of Fe/kg of MR were normal. PFe did not change, whereas Hb, EC, PCV, and blood lactate, heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), respiratory minute volume (VE), fractional

Effect of the different intensities of iron-deficient anemia in pregnant rats on the maternal tissue iron and the fetal development was investigated. The different intensities of iron deficiency were produced by changing period of feeding on the iron depleted diet (0.38 mg/100 g diet) prior to gestation. The anemic rats were divided into three groups with the hemoglobin levels of 12, 10 and 8 g/100 ml on the first day of gestation. Then, rats of each group were fed on the iron adequate and on the depleted diets during gestation. The whole body weights of the three deficient animals were lower

We studied the effect of 2 weeks of iron therapy on exercise performance and exercise-induced lactate production in trained women athletes: six control subjects with normal parameters of iron status and nine with mild iron-deficiency anemia defined by low Fe/TIBC, ferritin, and minimally decreased Hgb values. Iron therapy improved the abnormal measures of iron status and low Hgb in the second group to normal. Exercise performance in a progressive work-exercise protocol on a bicycle ergometer to exhaustion was unchanged after iron therapy in both groups; however, blood lactate levels at maximum

Intravenous injection of the iron-poly(sorbitol-gluconic acid) complex (IPSG) to cats anaesthetized with sodium pentobarbitone caused a transient decrease in mean arterial blood pressure and a temporary increase in central venous pressure, heart rate and femoral blood flow at large doses (cumulative doses up to 744 mg/kg). Tachyphylaxis developed upon repeated administration. A temporary reduction in the magnitude of the blood pressure responses to noradrenaline and isoprenaline was obtained after large doses of IPSG. The blood pressure effects of acetylcholine, histamine and bilateral carotid

The red cell glutathione-peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity of 9 normal subjects is compared with that of 15 cases of iron deficiency anaemia and with 13 cases of heterozygous beta-thalassemia with the same degree of anaemia and hypochromia. 2 cases of sideroblastic anaemia with high serum iron levels were also examined. Enzymatic activity was found to be significantly decreased in iron deficiency anaemia (about 55% of normal range), while it was not affected in heterozygous beta thalassaemia and it was increased in the 2 cases of sideroblastic anaemia. Moreover, GSH-Px activity exhibited a signific

Microcytic hypochromic anemias, including iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) and vitamin B6-deficiency anemia (B6DA), share similar hematologic features but differ fundamentally in etiology and therapeutic responsiveness. IDA results from insufficient dietary iron, activating adaptive intestinal iron absorption via hypoxia-inducible factor 2⍺ (HIF2⍺), whereas B6DA impairs heme biosynthesis without systemic iron depletion, rendering it refractory to iron therapy. Here, we investigated whether intestinal HIF2⍺ activation distinguishes these anemias. Using mouse models, we established that severe dieta

OBJECTIVES: Anemia caused by nutritional deficiencies, such as iron and copper deficiencies, is a global health problem. Iron and copper deficiencies have their most profound effect on the developing fetus/infant, leading to brain development deficits and poor cognitive outcomes. Tissue iron depletion or chronic anemia can induce cellular hypoxic signaling. In mice, chronic hypoxia induces a compensatory increase in brain blood vessel outgrowth. We hypothesized that developmental anemia, due to iron or copper deficiencies, induces angiogenesis/vasculogenesis in the neonatal brain.
