"Not in the mood": The fear of being laughed at is better predicted by humor temperament traits than diagnosis in neurodevelopmental conditions.

BACKGROUND: Research has shown that autistic individuals seem to be more prone to develop gelotophobia (i.e., the fear of being laughed at) than typically developing individuals. The goals of the present study were to discover whether the high levels of gelotophobia found in autism in previous studies were replicated here, to expand the research to Down syndrome (DS) and Williams syndrome (WS), and to assess the relation between individual differences and social impairments, affective predispositions, and humor temperament. METHODS: Questionnaires were distributed to parents of autistic indiv

An Open Trial of Iloperidone for Mixed Episodes in Bipolar Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Mixed mood states in bipolar disorder are difficult to treat and when present indicate worse illness trajectories. Several medications are US Food and Drug Administration approved to treat mixed episodes; however, the clinical trials have been short term and rarely reported depression response. METHODS: We conducted a 5-month open-label trial examining the tolerability and efficacy of iloperidone for bipolar disorder mixed episodes. RESULTS: Mania and depression scores significantly improved over the course of the study for study completers (ie, 60%-68% improvement for manic symp

A case of Gorlin-Goltz syndrome presented with psychiatric features.

We report a case of a 34-year-old male who presented with an acute onset of pleomorphic psychiatric features. Upon examination we later diagnosed him with Gorlin-Goltz syndrome based on clinical and radiological findings that are characteristic for this rare autosomal dominant syndrome. His psychiatric manifestations included irritability, aggressive behavior, labile mood, hallucinations, paranoid delusions, and transient cognitive impairment. His past history indicated surgical excision of pigmented lesion in the left lower eyelid which turned out to be a basal cell carcinoma. His past visits

Plasmocytoma of the skull vault.

AIM: Plasma cell tumours include solitary plasmocytoma, multiple plasmocytoma and multiple myeloma. Herein we report a case of plasmocytoma of the skull. CASE HISTORY: A 49 year-old-man suffered from amnesia, irritability and a rubbery swelling which was gradually increased approximately to 4-5 cm in diameter at the frontal vertex over a year. His neurological examination was normal. The skull direct X-ray revealed patchy destruction of the left frontal bone 10 cm in diameter. CT with bone windows showed relatively preserved but severely thinned inner table and irregularly destructed outer ta

Depressive symptoms in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

OBJECTIVES: A comparison was made between the depressive symptom profiles of thirty patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) who did not have co-existing depression and thirty patients with major depression who did not have co-existing dementia. The main objective was to identify symptoms common to both disorders and those which may be able to differentiate AD from major depression. METHOD: A sample of patients suffering from either AD (n = 30) or major depression (n = 30) were recruited from a specialist old age psychiatry service. Depressive symptoms were profiled using the Hamilton Depressio

[Successful treatment using low-dose carbamazepine for a patient of personality change after mild diffuse brain injury].

A 19-year-old male had a traffic accident while driving his motorbike and suffered an injury to the left frontotemporal part of the head. He remained conscious, had no focal neurological signs, and brain-computed tomography was unremarkable at the prefectural hospital, department of neurosurgery. Six months later he demonstrated a personality change, which was marked by irritability, aggression, labile moods, childishness, irresponsibility, and a lack of motivation. He sometimes made trouble for those around him, and he consulted our hospital 2 years and 9 months after the accident. He was dia

Perceived traffic air pollution, associated behavior and health in an alpine area.

The relationship of traffic air pollution, perception of exhaust fumes/soot and behavioral impact or symptoms/illnesses was investigated in two surveys (adults: aged 25-65, N = 1989, 62% participation; children: aged 8-12, N = 796, 85% participation) in 13 small alpine communities (Tyrol/Austria) by means of questionnaire responses and air pollution measurements. Although pollutant levels complied with current WHO guidelines, adult respondents felt annoyed by odourous traffic fumes (39.7%) or visible dust/soot (26.9%). Logistic regression analysis revealed that accompanying noise annoyance, ra

The development of an observer-scale for measuring social dysfunction and aggression.

Scales for measuring aggressive cognitions and behaviour have mainly been administered by nursing-staff or been self-ratings. During recent years we have made an attempt to construct an observer-scale for aggression analogous to the Hamilton scale for depression. The Social Dysfunction and Aggression Scale (SDAS) consists of 9 items (SDAS-9) covering outward aggression and 2 items (SDAS-2) covering inward aggression. The inter-observer reliability of the SDAS has been found adequate in terms of intra-class coefficients. In a pilot study on 82 inpatients from different centres in Denmark and Sw

Evening chronotype is associated with affective temperaments, emotional dysregulation, and bipolar-spectrum features: An observational study in 1997 adults from a large community sample.

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence supports an association between chronotype and mental health, with evening chronotype (ET) being associated with increased vulnerability to bipolar disorder (BD). METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of adults recruited between February and September 2022 from community COVID-19 points of care in Padua, Italy. Participants completed validated self-report measures assessing chronotype (rMEQ), affective temperaments (Brief-TEMPS-M), emotion regulation (DERS), and subthreshold bipolarity (MDQ and HCL-32-R2). Group differences across chronotypes were examine

Depression in Diarrhea-Predominant IBS Patients: Exploring the Link Between Gut Barrier Dysfunction and Erythrocyte Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Levels.

Background: Patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) often experience comorbid psychological conditions, notably depression and anxiety. Evidence suggests that these conditions are linked to gut barrier dysfunction, dysbiosis, and chronic inflammation. All these factors are central to IBS pathophysiology and mood disturbances. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) play crucial roles in modulating inflammation and depression. This study examined the associations among intestinal permeability, PUFA profiles, low-grade inflammation, and depression severity in IBS patients with diarrhea (IBS-D).

Impact of parathyroidectomy on quality of life in primary hyperparathyroidism.

Patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) frequently report symptoms that are associated with the disease and impact on their quality of life (QoL). While parathyroidectomy corrects calcium and PTH levels, its impact on improving patients' QoL is not clear. In this single centre prospective study, we aimed to assess the impact of a parathyroidectomy on PHPT patients' pre and post parathyroidectomy QoL over a period of three years and nine months. PHPT patients, undergoing parathyroidectomy, voluntarily completed a modified Pasieka Parathyroidectomy Assessment Score (PAS), a tool correla

Effects of Physical Exercise on the Microbiota in Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a prevalent functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, and constipation. Recent studies have underscored the significant role of the gut microbiota in the pathogenesis of IBS. Physical exercise, as a non-pharmacological intervention, has been proposed to alleviate IBS symptoms by modulating the gut microbiota. Aerobic exercise, such as running, swimming, and cycling, has been shown to enhance the diversity and abundance of beneficial gut bacteria, including Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. These bacteria produce

Oral microbiota signatures in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) veterans.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) represents a global public health concern, affecting about 1 in 20 individuals. The symptoms of PTSD include intrusiveness (involuntary nightmares or flashbacks), avoidance of traumatic memories, negative alterations in cognition and mood (such as negative beliefs about oneself or social detachment), increased arousal and reactivity with irritable reckless behavior, concentration problems, and sleep disturbances. PTSD is also highly comorbid with anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. To advance the field from subjective, self-reported psychological mea

Neurovisceral phenotypes in the expression of psychiatric symptoms.

This review explores the proposal that vulnerability to psychological symptoms, particularly anxiety, originates in constitutional differences in the control of bodily state, exemplified by a set of conditions that include Joint Hypermobility, Postural Tachycardia Syndrome and Vasovagal Syncope. Research is revealing how brain-body mechanisms underlie individual differences in psychophysiological reactivity that can be important for predicting, stratifying and treating individuals with anxiety disorders and related conditions. One common constitutional difference is Joint Hypermobility, in whi

The cannabinoid-1 receptor inverse agonist taranabant reduces abdominal pain and increases intestinal transit in mice.

BACKGROUND: Constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-C) is a common functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorder with abdominal pain and decreased motility. Current treatments of IBS-C are insufficient. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential application of taranabant, a cannabinoid type 1 (CB1) inverse agonist using mouse models mimicking the symptoms of IBS-C. METHODS: Changes in intestinal contractile activity were studied in vitro, using isolated mouse ileum and colon and intracellular recordings. In vivo, whole gastrointestinal transit (WGT) and fecal pellet output

Time-Restricted Ketogenic Diet in Huntington's Disease: A Case Study.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a progressive, fatal neurodegenerative disorder with limited treatment options. Substantial evidence implicates mitochondria dysfunction in brain and skeletal muscle in the pathogenesis of HD. Metabolic strategies, such as fasting and ketogenic diets, theoretically enhance brain and muscle metabolism and mitochondria function, which may improve the clinical symptoms of HD. We report the case of a 41-year-old man with progressive, deteriorating HD who pursued a time-restricted ketogenic diet (TRKD) for 48 weeks. Improvements were measured in his motor symptoms (52%

Aggressive behaviour in schizophrenic patients after abrupt treatment discontinuation.

OBJECTIVE: This retrospective study examined the demographic, clinical and pharmacological factors associated with aggressive behaviour after abrupt discontinuation of medication in schizophrenic patients. METHOD: The study reports on a survey of 402 schizophrenic patients, who had abruptly discontinued their medication and had been involuntarily hospitalized to Psychiatric Hospital of Attika. The survey utilized the Discontinuation-Emergent Signs and Symptoms Checklist (DESS) to assess the signs and symptoms that patients exhibited (Rosenbaum et al., Biol Psychiatry 1998;44:77), as well the
