I analyzed the BCG vaccination and treatment of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) for infants notified in 2008 in Japan. BCG was not recommended and treatment of LTBI was the main activity for prevention of TB in infants from birth to age 2 months. The majority of notified LTBI cases were detected by contact surveys. Out of the estimated number of TB infected (148), only 2 cases were notified based on the outcome of LTBI treatment for 89 infants. Approximately 140 pediatric living donor liver transplantations (PLDLTs) are performed annually in Japan. The most common indication for PLDLT is biliary atresia. There have been identified 1051 cases of prion dsease in Japan since 1999 by the surveillance committee, of which idiopathic prion disease held 77.8%, hereditary 15.9% and infectious 6.6%. Laryngeal plasmacytoma is rare in Japan; to the best of our knowledge, only 8 other cases have been previously reported. We report a new case of extramedullary plasmacytoma of the larynx in a 76-year-old Japanese woman. Immunohistochemical investigation revealed that her disease had not progressed to multiple myeloma. The patient declined radiotherapy, and her condition remained stable at the 6-month follow-up.

METHODS: Using vital statistics of Japan for 6 year period between 1999 and 2004 officially published by the government, we observed the mortality from Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (ICD-10th: A81.0 and A81.8) by prefecture. Standardized mortality ratios were calculated for the 47 prefectures.
