CD56 expression is associated with neuroectodermal differentiation in ameloblastomas: an immunohistochemical evaluation in comparison with odontogenic cystic lesions.

Ameloblastoma (AB), which is the most common odontogenic tumor, may originate from the dental lamina remnants. The expression of CD56, which is a transmembrane molecule, is associated with neuroectodermal differentiation of the embryonal cells. The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of CD56 in AB, in comparison with other odontogenic cysts. We used formalin-fixed, paraffi n-embedded specimens from 34 cases of AB, 10 cases of keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT), and 7 cases of dentigerous cyst (DC). We immunohistochemically examined CD56, NeuroD1, and N-cadherin expression in th

Comparative expression of RANK, RANKL, and OPG in keratocystic odontogenic tumors, ameloblastomas, and dentigerous cysts.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the expression of nuclear factor kappaB (RANK), RANK ligand (RANKL), and osteoprotegerin (OPG) in odontogenic epithelial tumors and dentigerous cysts. STUDY DESIGN: The expression of these molecules was evaluated in solid/multicystic ameloblastomas (n = 12) and unicystic ameloblastomas (n = 8), keratocystic odontogenic tumors (n = 19), dentigerous cysts (n = 9), and dental follicles (n = 9) by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: In odontogenic epithelium, a similar expression of RANK, RANKL, and OPG was observed in all samples. With regard to stroma

Primary intraosseous carcinoma and odontogenic cyst. Three new cases and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: The Odontogenic Primary Intraosseous Carcinoma (PIOC) are a rare group of malignant tumours with strict clinic and anatomy pathological diagnosis criteria. The different classification suggested for these tumours and the small amount of cases described in literature makes it hard to know exactly how many of the cases published until now are real. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We present three new cases of PIOC originated from a previous cystic lesion that where treated in our Hospital. Two of them in the posterior jaw region where is more frequent, and the third in the upper jaw. We exp

The use of immediate frozen autogenous mandible, for benign tumour mandibular reconstruction.

Reimplantation of frozen autogenous lesioned mandible was performed in 31 patients with mandibular bone cysts and tumours. 26 reimplanted grafts survived without complications following surgery. Two cases had postoperative infections which were resolved following appropriate antibiotic treatment. Three grafts were removed due to the severe infection and wound dehiscence. The follow-up from 6 months to 4 years showed that there was no recurrence of the primary lesion in the 28 successful cases. Satisfactory facial contour after surgery was achieved in 19 patients, while other patients showed re

The use of high resolution magnetic resonance on 3.0-T system in the diagnosis and surgical planning of intraosseous lesions of the jaws: preliminary results of a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The pre-operative evaluation in oral and maxillofacial surgery is currently performed by computerized tomography (CT). However in some case the information of the traditional imaging methods are not enough in the diagnosis and surgical planning. The efficacy of these imaging methods in the evaluation of soft tissues is lower than magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). AIM: The aim of the study was to show the use of MRI in the evaluation of relation between intraosseous lesions of the jaws and anatomical structures, when it was difficult using the traditional radiographic methods, and

The original family revisited after 37 years: odontoma-dysphagia syndrome is most likely caused by a microduplication of chromosome 11q13.3, including the FGF3 and FGF4 genes.

OBJECTIVES: Fibroblast growth factors consist of receptor tyrosine kinase binding proteins involved in growth, differentiation, and regeneration of a variety of tissues of the head and neck. Their role in the development of teeth has been documented, and their presence in human odontogenic cysts and tumors has previously been investigated. Odontoma–dysphagia syndrome (OMIM 164330) is a very rare disorder characterized by clustering of teeth as compound odontoma, dysplasia and aplasia of teeth, slight craniofacial abnormalities, and dysphagia. We have followed the clinical course of the disease

Pigmented ocular fundus lesions and APC mutations in familial adenomatous polyposis.

BACKGROUND: Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) results from a germline mutation in the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene on chromosome 5q21. The extracolonic manifestations of FAP include pigmented ocular fundus lesions (POFLS), cutaneous cysts, osteomas, occult radio-opaque jaw lesions, odontomas, desmoids, and extracolonic cancers. POFLS are present at birth in about 80% of patients with FAP and are excellent clinical congenital markers for the disease. We studied the distribution of POFLS by number and APC mutation in families of the Johns Hopkins Polyposis Registry. MATERIALS AND ME

Immediate dental implant failure associated with nasopalatine duct cyst.

This case report presents an analysis of the clinical, radiographic, and histological features of a peri-implant lesion around an implant placed immediately after extraction of a tooth with a periapical lesion. A 52-year-old man received an immediate implant (3.75 x 11.5 mm2) placed in the anterior region of the maxilla. Three years after implant placement, the patient presented with swelling in the anterior portion of the maxilla. Radiographic examination showed a well-circumscribed radiolucency around the implant. The implant and the lesion were removed and fixed in 10% buffered formalin and

Mucus escape reaction that involves the mandible: a case report and diagnostic imaging considerations.

We present a case of mucus escape reaction in which we encountered difficulty in interpreting the images acquired by plain radiography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. The 48-year-old male Japanese patient was referred for evaluation of a gradual swelling subjacent to the inferior border of the left mandible. At the early imaging examinations, magnetic resonance imaging provided information crucial to resolving the issue of whether the lesion consisted of a central malignant disease process or a malignant disease in the submandibular space or both of these two separate dis

3D reconstruction of TMJ after resection of the cyst and the stress-strain analyses.

The aim of this article is 3D analysis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) patient, who underwent surgery, during which the right TMJ was resected along with the ramus of mandible and consequently the joint was reconstructed with subtotal replacement. The main goal is to give a suitable formulation of mathematical model, which describes the changes of stresses in TMJ incurred after the surgery. The TMJ is a complex, sensitive and highly mobile joint which works bilaterally so each side influences the contralateral joint and because of this the distribution of the stresses is changed in the he

Tubulopapillary hidradenoma-like tumor of the mandible.

Tubulopapillary hidradenomas are uncommon benign tumors of the dermis, most commonly occurring in the skin of the head or of the extremities. Complete excision is generally curative and recurrences are rare. The authors describe an unusual case of an intraosseous tubulopapillary hidradenoma of the mandible that recurred 1 year after initial curettage and required en-bloc resection.

Odontogenic keratocyst: Review of 256 cases for recurrence and clinicopathologic parameters.

Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is of particular interest because of its high recurrence rate and aggressive behavior. Two hundred fifty-six cases of OKC were reviewed for the age of the patient at diagnosis, sex of the patient, OKC location, and radiographic findings, and 132 patients with OKC were observed to estimate recurrence, which was analyzed for age, sex, location, and several histopathologic findings. OKCs occurred more frequently in men (58.6%) than in women (41.4%), and they occurred in patients within a wide age range, most commonly in patients in the third decade of life (28.9%), fo
