From 1980 to 1991, 14 patients with pure ankle dislocation unassociated with fracture were identified. All patients were young adults (18-41 years of age) with a male preponderance (11 of 14). The cause of injury in nine of the 14 cases was a motor vehicle accident and in the remainder, sporting events or fall from a height. Thirteen of the 14 injuries were open, and 12 patients underwent lateral ligamentous repair. Twelve of the 14 patients were available for follow-up, which ranged from 15 to 122 months. Two patients had poor results; the remainder (10 of 12) had good and excellent results.

Total talar dislocation without a fracture is an extremely rare injury. It is often the result of high-energy trauma, such as that incurred after a fall, or owing to motor or vehicular accidents. Talar dislocations have poor outcomes owing to the frequent complications of infection, avascular necrosis and osteoarthritis attributed to open dislocations. We report herein a closed total talar dislocation without a fracture in a college athlete who was injured during sports activities. Specifically, a 20-year-old man was injured during a soccer game this led to a closed total talar dislocation. We

Good outcomes have been reported with both fixed-bearing and mobile-bearing unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA). However, overcorrected alignment could induce the progression of arthritis on the non-arthroplasty side. Changes of limb alignment after UKA with both types of bearings (fixed bearing: 24 knees, mobile bearing: 28 knees) were investigated. The mean difference between the preoperative standing femoral-tibial angle (FTA) and postoperative standing FTA was significantly larger in mobile bearing UKA group. In fixed-bearing UKA, there must be some laxity in MCL tension so that a 2-m

Nail patella syndrome (NPS) is an autosomal dominant hereditary disorder affecting the nails, skeletal system, kidneys, and eyes. Skeletal features include absent or hypoplastic patellae, patella dislocations, elbow abnormalities, talipes and iliac horns on plain films. The existing literature focuses on clinical and radiographic findings in patients with NPS. We also report the case of a 40-year-old male patient and his family affected by NPS and includes clinical, radiographic as well as arthroscopic findings. Arthroscopic findings in this case are characterized by multiple synovial plicae i

The intra-articular migration of a femoral interference screw is a rare complication after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction in the knee. Only a few reports of cases have been published within the last few years and different approaches toward this complication have been described. We report the case of a 23-year-old female patient who was admitted with knee pain after undergoing an ACL reconstruction 4 years previously. After the clinical examination, a knee radiograph in 2 planes revealed a dislocated femoral interference screw lying in the popliteal fossa. During arthroscopy,

Injuries of the popliteal artery are frequent in the dislocations of the knee joint, and an early diagnosis of a lesion of the popliteal artery is the base for the successful treatment. Generally, in all the traumas in the region or proximity of the knee joint, it should always be taken into consideration a possibility of arterial injury. In our case there was a posterior knee joint luxation with evidently contused and thrombosed popliteal artery. The surgery was done in an inappropriate time (more than 14 hours after the injury), and consisted in a Goretex graft interposition, and following a

PURPOSE: The study aims to investigate the influence of patient- and fracture-specific factors on the occurrence of complications after osteosynthesis of patella fractures and to compare knee joint function, activity, and subjective pain levels after a regular postoperative course and after complications in the medium term.
METHODS: This retrospective, multicenter cohort study examined patients who received surgery for patella fracture at level 1 trauma centers between 2013 and 2018. Patient demographics and fracture-specific variables were evaluated. Final follow-up assessments included pati

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Busch-Hoffa fractures are rare intra-articular coronal plane fractures of the femoral condyle that often remain unnoticed, particularly when complications develop. Due to their instability and risk of long-term problems, these fractures require immediate anatomical reduction and stable fixation. The occurrence of a Busch-Hoffa fracture in conjunction with patellar dislocation is extremely rare and has been rarely reported in the current literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case involving a 21-year-old male who experienced a Bagaria type 2 Hoffa fracture of t

PURPOSE: To determine the clinical and biomechanical outcomes after either an isolated medial quadriceps-tendon femoral ligament (MQTFL) reconstruction or a medial patellofemoral complex reconstruction, which is a combined MQTFL reconstruction and medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction, to treat recurrent patellar dislocation and compare these outcomes with those after an isolated MPFL reconstruction.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature search using PubMed, The Cochrane Library, Embase, and Web of Science to compare the effectiveness of double-bundle MPFL/MQTFL reconst

Medial quadriceps tendon-femoral ligament (MQTFL) reconstruction for prevention of recurrent patella dislocation is an alternative to medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction. Because the reconstruction graft attaches to the quadriceps tendon, no patella drill hole is required, thereby eliminating iatrogenic fracture risk. The procedure remains anatomically accurate and early results are comparable to MPFL reconstruction for preventing patella dislocation. The MQTFL reconstruction graft is brought up under the vastus medialis obliquus distal to the patella apex, such that its orien

We describe our experience with the 'four-in-one' procedure for habitual dislocation of the patella in five children (six knees). All the patients presented with severe generalised ligamentous laxity and aplasia of the trochlear groove. All had a lateral release, proximal 'tube' realignment of the patella, semitendinosus tenodesis and transfer of the patellar tendon. The mean age at the time of the operation was 6.1 years (4.9 to 6.9), and the patients were followed up for a mean of 54.5 months (31 to 66). The clinical results were evaluated using the Kujala score. There has been no recurrence

UNLABELLED: Avoiding stem extensions in total knee arthroplasties may decrease operative time, prosthetic cost, and canal invasion at surgery. A constrained condylar knee implant without stem extensions also likely will be easier to revise and will eliminate the risk of end of stem pain. Our hypothesis was that a constrained condylar knee implant for primary severely deformed knees would show excellent midterm results with a low rate of aseptic loosening, even without diaphyseal-engaging stems. We retrospectively reviewed 70 consecutive primary constrained condylar knee implants without stem e

Up to now, surgical treatment of recurrent lateral patellar dislocation mainly includes: medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction, tibial tubercle osteotomy, trochleoplasty, lateral retinacular release, derotation osteotomy and so on . Clinical reports show that: the use of a single or combined with several methods have achieved ideal short to mid-term clinical outcomes. However, there is no consolidate criterion concerning the choices of different kinds of surgical ways for the treatment of individual recurrent lateral patellar dislocation. Meanwhile, with the wide use of MPFL reconstruc

We report a case of symptomatic subluxation of the semitendinosus and gracilis over the medial condyle of the tibia caused by the thickening of its tendons. Snapping was reproduced on active extension. Clinical examination and, above all, dynamic ultrasound were the key for the diagnosis because other imaging tests were normal. Due to failure of conservative treatment with physiotherapy and infiltrations, surgery was undertaken, involving desinsertion and excision of distal 8cm segment of the semitendinosus and gracilis tendons. At the present time (6 months postoperatively), the patient is sy

Proximal tibiofibular dislocations are rare lesions, especially as they may pass unnoticed when associated with tibial fractures. Anatomically, there is bony and ligamentous predisposition to upward and backward dislocation of the proximal tibiofibular joint which is promoted by the shortening of the lower limb accompanying a tibial fracture. We report 3 tibial fractures associated with acute ischemia due to proximal tibiofibular dislocation, an association never previously described. This lesion and its mechanism were studied anatomically.

BACKGROUND: Multiligament knee injuries (MLKIs) are heterogeneous, and bicruciate knee ligament injuries are considered a serious form of this injury. The current literature tends not to distinguish between single and bicruciate MLKI when reporting outcomes.
PURPOSE: To investigate patient-reported outcomes after surgical treatment of MLKI comparing single cruciate MLKI with bicruciate MLKI. The secondary aim was to investigate the influence of different factors on patient-reported outcomes after surgery.
STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3.
METHODS: This study was designed as
