CONTEXT: Aphasia is a very disabling condition caused by neurological diseases. In Brazil, we have little data on the profile of aphasics treated in rehabilitation centers.
OBJECTIVE: To present a descriptive study of 192 patients, providing a reference sample of speech and language disturbances among Brazilians.
DESIGN: Retrospective study.
SETTING: Speech Pathology Unit linked to the Neurology Division of the Hospital das Clínicas of the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo.

The study of equivalence relations exhibited by individuals with mental retardation and language limitations holds the promise of providing information of both theoretical and practical significance. We reviewed the equivalence literature with this population, defined in terms of subjects having moderate, severe, or profound mental retardation. This investigation examined the reading outcomes of children with language impairments (LI). A large subsample of children who participated in an epidemiologic study of language impairments in kindergarten (J. B. Tomblin, N. Records, P. Buckwalter, X. Zhang, E. Smith, & M. Language and communication difficulties experienced by secondary school students are outlined. The challenges that the secondary school environment presents for both children and speech and language therapy services are discussed. The prolonged central transmission time (CTT) in ABR examinations in children with the delayed speech was described in 1992. Now after 4 years the examinations were repeated. The literacy skills of 56 school leavers from the Bishop and Edmundson (1987) cohort of preschoolers with specific language impairment (SLI) were assessed at 15 years. The SLI group performed worse on tests of reading, spelling, and reading comprehension than age-matched controls and the literacy outcomes were particularly poor for those with Performance IQ less than 100. Children with developmental language impairment (LI) are defined partly by the absence of other identifiable neurological diagnoses. Such children are generally considered to be neurologically normal, but no systematic studies of neurological function have been reported. This paper reports some of the findings from a survey of speech and language therapists (SLTs) regarding their practice in the assessment of aphasia and their views on the assessments currently available. The reason for the survey was a desire to investigate whether the concerns about the adequacy of current approaches expressed in the research literature were in line with the perceptions of practising clinicians. It is also seen as a means of helping to ensure that any new instruments that may be developed are relevant to the needs of clinicians.

INTRODUCTION: This review is a meta-analysis of Chinese language publications on surgical treatment for oesophageal cancer.
METHODS: Between 1980 and 1994, 17,815 patients had surgery for carcinoma of the oesophagus. The male:female ratio was 3.9:1 and mean age was 51.9 (range 16-80) years.
RESULTS: Mean resectability rate was 86.7 per cent and hospital mortality rate was 3.8 per cent. The crude 5-year and 10-year survival rates for all patients were 29.6 and 16.4 per cent respectively. This study examined the relationship between psychiatric and language disorders in a sample of youth who were hospitalized at a private psychiatric hospital.
