In a community population of girls aged between 15 and 20 years, a sample of 142 girls provided information on their confiding relationships. A clear preference emerged for using other girls and women as problem solvers and intimate confidants. Mothers were the most usual first-named problem solver, but intimate confiding was affected by the quality of the mother-daughter relationship. Confiding in fathers was rare. This study addresses the utility of the MMPI-2 in assessing personality characteristics of women who have a high potential for abusing their children. A sample of 154 women was identified on the basis of demographic characteristics as high risk for child abuse and other care-taking problems. As part of a larger panel study, interviews were obtained from 3 samples of older adults: 45 persons who had recently lost a spouse, 40 who had lost a parent or child, and 45 who were not bereaved. Assessments were conducted before and after the deaths. In the widowed sample, health remained quite stable, but depression increased sharply, then remained elevated. Changes were minimal in the sample who had lost a parent or child and in the nonbereaved sample. The problems that people experience in social roles can be regarded as either causes or consequences of psychological symptoms. To reflect one of these possibilities, Pearlin et al. Bereavement after recent or earlier losses of loved ones is analyzed in 155 patients older than 60 years. Patients were treated by psychiatrists for endogenous, neurotic, or reactive depression. Data from a community survey were used to test the proposition that pathological guilt and vegetative symptoms of depression were less likely to be associated with stressful life events and difficulties than non-specific symptoms like tension and worry. Two types of analysis were carried out: the first took only cases, defined as ID5+ on the Index of Definition program, the second was based on all subjects. Coroners' statistics indicated there were 684 suicides for the whole of Hong Kong in 1981. This gave a crude suicide rate of 18.1 per 100,000 population aged 15 years and over and constituted 2.7% of all deaths reported in that year. Only a few data were recorded in all coroners' files but additional data were obtained from police records on 168 of these suicides. BACKGROUND: Psychosocial stress has been associated with an increased risk for mental and somatic health problems across the life span. Some studies in younger adults linked this to accelerated cellular aging, indexed by shortened telomere length (TL). In older adults, the impact of psychosocial stress on TL may be different due to the lifetime exposure to competing causes of TL-shortening. This study aims to assess whether early and recent psychosocial stressors (childhood abuse, childhood adverse events, recent negative life events, and loneliness) were associated with TL in older adults.
