A primary cell wall cellulose-dependent defense mechanism against vascular pathogens revealed by time-resolved dual transcriptomics.

BACKGROUND: Cell walls (CWs) are protein-rich polysaccharide matrices essential for plant growth and environmental acclimation. The CW const … sis mutants impaired in primary CW cellulose synthesis. We confirmed that Arabidopsis roots deposit lignin in response to Fo5176 infection, but we show that lignin-deficient mutants were as susceptible as wildtype plants to Fo5176. Genetic impairment of jasmonic acid biosynthesis and signaling did not alter Arabidopsis response to Fo5176, whereas impairm …

Efficient pretreatment of Phragmites australis biomass using glutamic acid for bioethanol production by a hybrid hydrolysis and fermentation strategy.

Microbial fermentation of renewable lignocellulosic biomass to produce biofuels presents significant environmental advantages. The conversion of cellulose and hemicellulose into fermentable sugars provides essential carbon sources for microbial metabolism. However, the recalcitrance of biomass limits enzymatic accessibility. In this study, mild L-glutamic acid (GA) pretreatment was applied to Phragmites australis residues (reed straw) to fractionate lignin and polysaccharides for enhancing enzymatic hydrolysis. Pretreatment with 0.20 mol/L GA at 180 °C for 50 min (logRo = 4.1) achieved glucan …

Fantastic Ferulic Acid Esterases and Their Functions.

Ferulic acid (FA) is one of the most abundant hydroxycinnamic acids found in plant cell walls. Its dehydrodimers play an important role in maintaining the structural rigidity of the plant cell wall. Ferulic acid esterases (FAEs) act as debranching enzymes, cleaving the ester bond between FA and the substituted carbohydrate moieties in FA-containing polysaccharides in the plant cell wall. This enzymatic reaction facilitates the degradation of lignocellulosic materials and is crucial for the efficient utilization of biomass resources. This review focuses on the occurrence of ferulic acid in natu

Mutualism between degraders and nondegraders stabilizes the function of a natural biopolymer-degrading community.

Natural biopolymer-degrading microbial communities drive carbon biogeochemical cycling. Within these communities, polymer degraders facilitate the growth of nondegraders by breaking down polymers through extracellular enzymes. However, the contributions of nondegraders to community dynamics, as well as the mechanisms that limit their access to degradation products, remain poorly understood. Here, we investigate EMSD5, a lignocellulose-degrading microbial community that efficiently converts corncob into isopropanol. We demonstrate that nondegraders, such as Escherichia coli, enable the growth o

Acetate production from corn stover hydrolysate using recombinant Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) with an EP-bifido pathway.

BACKGROUND: Acetate is an important chemical feedstock widely applied in the food, chemical and textile industries. It is now mainly produced from petrochemical materials through chemical processes. Conversion of lignocellulose biomass to acetate by biotechnological pathways is both environmentally beneficial and cost-effective. However, acetate production from carbohydrate in lignocellulose hydrolysate via glycolytic pathways involving pyruvate decarboxylation often suffers from the carbon loss and results in low acetate yield. RESULTS: Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) was confirmed to have high

Hydrothermal liquefaction of lignocellulosic biomass with potassium phosphate and iron and their binary mixture: A comprehensive investigation on the yields and compositions of biocrude and solid residue.

Hydrothermal liquefaction of corn, soybean, rice and wheat straws with K3PO4, Fe and Fe + K3PO4 at 320 °C for 30 min was examined. The addition of K3PO4 led to the highest biocrude yields from hydrothermal liquefaction of rice straws (39.20 wt%). Particularly, the biocrude yields from K3PO4-catalyzed hydrothermal liquefaction of corn and rice straws were ∼ 10 wt% higher than those from non-catalytic run (19.4 and 27.8 wt%). Catalytic hydrothermal liquefaction with K3PO4 had minimal impact on the elemental compositions of biocrudes and solid residue. Furthermore, K3PO4 promoted the enrichment o

Transformations of bamboo into bioethanol through biorefinery.

The increasing demand for energy has prompted scholars to research alternative energy sources. Bamboo is a species of woody perennial grass that belongs to the Gramineae family and the Bambuseae subfamily. It could be considered a possible lignocellulosic substrate for the production of bioethanol due to its favourable environmental effects and increased yearly biomass yield. Non-renewable fossil fuels cannot provide enough energy to meet the needs of contemporary societies. Among the various alternative energy sources, bioethanol has drawn a lot of attention from people all around the world.

Integration of steam gasification and catalytic reforming of lignocellulosic biomass as a strategy to improve syngas quality and pollutants removal.

Residual biomass gasification is a promising route for the production of H2-rich syngas. However, the simultaneous formation of pollutants such as light hydrocarbons (HCs), benzene, toluene and xylenes (BTEX), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) during gasification must be controlled. As a result, this study evaluated the effect of temperature and catalytic reforming over a Rh-Pt/CeO2-SiO2 catalyst during steam gasification of sugarcane residual biomass on syngas composition and pollutant removal. The above was carried out in a

Simultaneous biofiltration of H2S and NH3 using compost mixtures from lignocellulosic waste and chicken manure as packing material.

Biofiltration offers an efficient and economical alternative for the elimination of offensive odors caused by hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and volatile organic compounds. Considering that packing materials affect the performance and represent the main installation cost, the purpose of this work was to evaluate the biofiltration of H2S and NH3 comparing three composted mixtures made from chicken manure and lignocellulosic residues (pruning waste, sugarcane bagasse, and rice husk) used as packing material. A range of gas concentrations similar to those of a municipal WWTP was used in the biofiltra

Thermostable Carbohydrate-Active Enzymes for High-Temperature Biomass Conversion: From Molecular Design to Process Integration.

High-temperature processing of carbohydrate-rich biomass, including starch liquefaction and lignocellulose saccharification, can improve sugar yields, reduce contamination risks, and facilitate integration with thermochemical pretreatments. However, the operational stability of native carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) at 60-90 °C remains a major bottleneck for efficient and economically viable biorefineries, and existing reviews rarely integrate multiscale molecular mechanisms with process-relevant engineering strategies. This review systematically examines the multiscale basis of thermost

Renewable and Sustainable Biorefinery: A Patent Review.

BACKGROUND: Biorefineries can refer to forms of fuel production through renewable biomass derivatives, using different structures of lignocellulosic material, such as lignin, hemicellulose, and cellulose. From lignin, we can produce natural binders and adhesives, among other products. With hemicellulose, we can produce emulsifiers, resins, or lubricants, for example. Using cellulose, we can produce fuels, such as ethanol and biodiesel, or even solvents. Fuels from biorefineries can replace, totally or partially, non-renewable fuels that pollute the environment, such as oil. Considering the cli…
