Why communities must be at the centre of the Coronavirus disease 2019 response: Lessons from Ebola and human immunodeficiency virus in Africa.

As the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has spread globally, with no effective treatment or vaccine yet available, governments in many countries have put in place social interventions to control the outbreak. The various lockdown measures may have devastating impacts on economies and livelihoods. This approach risks undermining public trust in government responses and therefore undermines efforts to promote behaviour change, which is key to the success of social interventions. Important lessons can be drawn from past Ebola outbreaks and the human immunodeficiency virus pandemic on

[Epidemiologic features of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis from clinical data of patients receiving a public aid for treatment].

In 1999, clinical data of 125 patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) were obtained by the Research Committee from local prefectural governments. The data were made by physicians treating the patients, and were submitted to the governments when the patients applied for the aid. By analyzing the data, we observed the epidemiologic features of the disease in Japan, and discussed the availability of the data as the source of epidemiologic researches. Of the 125 patients, 66 were males and 59 were females. The distribution of age at onset had a peak in 5-14 years of age with the a

Correlation between Structural Order and Diffusion Length in Granular Flow.

We investigate how structural ordering, i.e., crystallization, affects the flow of bidisperse granular materials in a quasi-two-dimensional silo. By systematically varying the mass fraction of two particle sizes, we finely tune the degree of local order. Using high-speed imaging and kinematic modeling, we show that crystallization significantly enhances the diffusion length b, a key parameter controlling the velocity profiles within the flowing medium. We reveal a strong correlation between b, the hexatic order parameter ψ_{6}, and the cluster size ξ, highlighting the role of local structural

[China's participation in schistosomiasis control in Africa: value and practice of the trinity model].

As a neglected tropical disease, schistosomiasis remains a major public health challenge in underdeveloped areas, notably Africa. Currently, the national schistosomiasis control programmes in Africa mainly depend on foreign aids; however, conventional international aid models have multiple limitations. To enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of global schistosomiasis control programmes, this article proposes a trinity collaboration model based on international rules, China's experiences and local needs, which is explained with China aid project of schistosomiasis control in Zanzibar as

Long-term delivery of alendronate through an injectable tetra-PEG hydrogel to promote osteoporosis therapy.

Pharmacotherapy for hypercalcemia, which is mainly caused by osteoporosis, is an effective method to regulate the in vivo calcium equilibrium. From this perspective, the development of a minimally invasive gelling system for the prolonged local delivery of bisphosphonates has practical significance in the clinical therapy of bone osteoporosis. Here, a biocompatible and injectable hydrogel based on a uniform tetra-PEG network carrying a PEG-modified alendronate (ALN) prodrug for the localized elution and long-term sustained release of anti-osteoporotic small molecule drugs is reported. The obta

Nuclear localization of the mitochondrial factor HIGD1A during metabolic stress.

Cellular stress responses are frequently governed by the subcellular localization of critical effector proteins. Apoptosis-inducing Factor (AIF) or Glyceraldehyde 3-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (GAPDH), for example, can translocate from mitochondria to the nucleus, where they modulate apoptotic death pathways. Hypoxia-inducible gene domain 1A (HIGD1A) is a mitochondrial protein regulated by Hypoxia-inducible Factor-1α (HIF1α). Here we show that while HIGD1A resides in mitochondria during physiological hypoxia, severe metabolic stress, such as glucose starvation coupled with hypoxia, in addition to

Who, what, where and when-influences on cutaneous vitamin D synthesis.

The synthesis of vitamin D in skin is a two-stage process that begins with the production of previtamin D after irradiation of 7-dehydrocholesterol by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. A number of personal and environmental factors control the probability of a suitable UV photon reaching a molecule of 7-dehydrocholesterol in the skin. These are astronomical factors that govern the solar zenith angle (SZA), and the local state of the atmosphere, determining the available solar UV radiation; skin pigmentation and age, determining competing absorbers of UV radiation and available 7-dehydrocholesterol;

Disease control during livestock movement among smallholder farming actors in Kisumu West Sub-County, Kenya.

Livestock movement remains a crucial socio-cultural practice for rural households in sub-Saharan Africa, yet disease-control practices during movement among sedentary smallholder farmers remain poorly understood. This study examined the relationship between livestock movement and disease-control strategies among smallholder farmers and other actors in Kisumu West Sub-County, western Kenya. Inspired by social practice theory and using a qualitative research design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 28 actors and two focus group discussions involving 16 participants, en

Implementation, enforcement, and monitoring of tobacco advertising, promotion, and sponsorship (TAPS) laws in Ethiopia: Insights from a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco advertising and promotion remain major drivers of tobacco use, particularly at points of sale (PoS). Ethiopia has enacted comprehensive tobacco control laws, including bans on TAPS at PoS. However, little is known about how these laws are implemented, monitored, and enforced in practice. This study explored the facilitators and barriers to implementing, monitoring compliance with, and enforcing TAPS laws at PoS in Ethiopia. METHODS: Qualitative interviews with 41 key informants were conducted between December 2022 and January 2023 across 10 purposively selected cities. Par

Bridging the leadership gap: agency training and support shapes non-supervisors' perceptions of their leaders.

BACKGROUND: Strong leadership is essential for government public health agencies to thrive, as it shapes critical factors like organizational culture, workforce engagement, and job satisfaction. Supervisors serve as key pathways to building and sustaining an effective public health workforce. To strengthen public health leadership, it is important to understand the training and support supervisors currently receive and how this influences the experiences of non-supervisory staff. METHODS: This analysis uses data from PH WINS 2024, a national survey of the state and local public health workfor

COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy, trust, and communication in Sarlahi District, Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Strategies to increase COVID-19 vaccine coverage require an understanding of the extent and drivers of vaccine hesitancy and trust in government related to COVID-19 vaccine programs, especially in low-resource communities. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional household survey post-COVID-19 vaccine introduction among adults (n = 362) in four municipalities in Sarlahi District, Nepal from August to December 2022. The survey included modules on participant demographics and socioeconomic factors and vaccine hesitancy, information seeking, and trust in authorities related to COVID-1

Evaluation of opportunities to implement community-wide mass drug administration for interrupting transmission of soil-transmitted helminths infections in India.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) guidelines recommend control of soil transmitted helminth (STH)-associated morbidity with targeted deworming of preschool and school-aged children who are disproportionately affected by STH-associated morbidity. However, this strategy leaves many adults untreated and reinfection within communities perpetuates transmission even when mass drug administration (MDA) coverage of children is high. Evidence suggests that it may be possible to interrupt STH transmission by expanding MDA to a community-wide MDA (cMDA). METHODS:

Moving on trial: protocol for a pilot randomised controlled trial of models of housing and support to reduce risks of COVID-19 infection and homelessness.

BACKGROUND: It is estimated that around 160,000 households in Britain experience homelessness each year, although no definitive statistics exist. Between March and September 2020, as part of the initial 'Everyone In' government response to COVID-19 in England, 10,566 people were living in emergency accommodation and nearly 18,911 people had been moved into settled accommodation. However, some forms of temporary accommodation may not be suitable as shared facilities make it impossible for people to adhere to government guidelines to reduce the spread of COVID-19. METHODS: This is parallel grou

The importance of facilitating renewable energy transition for abating CO2 emissions in Morocco.

ABSTRACT: Achieving environmental sustainability has become a core policy agenda of the Moroccan government. The nation's monotonic dependence on fossil fuels for meeting the local energy demand has been acknowledged as the major cause of environmental distress. Besides, Morocco has traditionally been a major importer of fossil fuels whereby the nation's fossil fuel dependency could not be phased out to a large extent. Consequently, the greenhouse gas emission figures of Morocco have persistently surged over the years. Moreover, Morocco has large reserves of untapped renewable energy sources

Design of rapid medical evacuation system for trauma patients resulting from biological and chemical terrorist attacks.

In the event of a large scale, biological or chemical terrorist attack it is unlikely that local emergency response organizations will have sufficient quantities of dedicated ambulances to evacuate all of the affected victims. As a potential solution to this problem, we have developed a device that can be retrofitted to a variety of government or civilian utility vehicles in order to convert them for emergency medical transport (US Pat. 7,028,351). Each installed device allows the host vehicle to safely transport either a single patient on a stretcher or multiple ambulatory patients. Additiona
