CASE HISTORY: A 13-year-old female spayed domestic shorthaired cat was examined because of lethargy, inappetance and weight loss.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: No clinically significant haematological or biochemical abnormalities were detected, but an abdominal mass was palpated. Abdominal examination using ultrasonography revealed soft tissue masses in the cranial abdomen, involving the spleen, as well as the liver and abdominal wall; the pancreas was not identified. Despite supportive therapy the condition of the cat rapidly deteriorated and euthanasia was performed.
PATHOLOGICAL FINDINGS: Cytologica

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a multisystem disorder of women, characterized by cystic degeneration of the lungs, renal angiomyolipomas (AML), and lymphatic abnormalities. LAM lesions result from the proliferation of benign-appearing, smooth muscle-like LAM cells, which are characterized by loss of heterozygosity (LOH) of one of the tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) genes. LAM cells are believed to migrate among the involved organs. Because of the apparently metastatic behavior of LAM, we tried to isolate LAM cells from body fluids. A cell fraction separated by density gradient centrifugati…

Angiopoietin-like 4 (Angptl4) is a secreted glycoprotein involved in the regulation of various homeostatic and disease processes. In the intestine, prior studies have suggested protective roles for Angptl4 in inflammation using Angptl4 knockout mouse models; however, phenotypic variability-such as perinatal lethality and intestinal inflammation accompanied by lymphatic defects in only a subset of animals-has complicated the interpretation of its role in intestinal pathogenesis. In this study, the impact of Angptl4 deficiency was examined using a subset of Angptl4 knockout mice that survive pos

BACKGROUND: Protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) is characterised by gastrointestinal protein leakage due to loss of mucosal integrity or lymphatic abnormalities. PLE can manifest as congenital diarrhoea and should be differentiated from other congenital diarrhoeal disorders. Primary PLEs are genetically heterogeneous and the underlying genetic defects are currently emerging.
OBJECTIVES: We report an infant with fatal PLE for whom we aimed to uncover the underlying pathogenic mutation.
METHODS: We performed whole exome sequencing (WES) for the index patient. Variants were classified based on the…

UNLABELLED: Several aspects of the natural history of paracoccidioidomycosis are still poorly understood. Different from the most prevalent, chronic form of the disease, the acute form represents a continuum from the initial respiratory infection to the full-blown disease, thus providing an opportunity to elucidate the pathogenesis of the early phase of this mycosis. We describe, for the first time, two patients with a single time point exposure to Paracoccidioides spp., for whom we were able to determine the time lapsed between exposure to the fungus Paracoccidioides spp. and the onset of sig

BACKGROUND: Massive osteolysis (Gorham-Stout syndrome) is a rare condition of unknown etiology that is thought to result from a localized endothelial proliferation of lymphatic vessels resulting in destruction and absorption of bone. Osteolysis of the jaws has been reported in association with infection, cysts, neoplasia, and metabolic, endocrine, or hematologic abnormalities. Rare cases of idiopathic osteolysis have also been recorded. A detailed review from various peer reviewed journals has been discussed in this article.
OBJECTIVES: To discuss the demographic distribution and possibilitie

CONTEXT: This report describes a minute pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma which appeared to be in early stage tumor progression based on the study of its molecular abnormalities. In addition, it was associated with lipomatous pseudohypertrophy, a rare disease.
CASE REPORT: A 78-year-old male presented to our department with an incidental pancreatic tumor. Abdominal dynamic computed tomography showed an enlarged pancreas, and diffuse fat density in the entire pancreas was demonstrated. In the pancreatic body, a slightly enhanced early phase 10 mm mass was detected. He underwent a distal pancrea

Hyperimmunoglobulinemia, and other manifestations of B-cell stimulation, have been reported frequently in adults with type 1 Gaucher disease. We investigated the occurrence of hyperimmunoglobulinemia in 23 pediatric patients with type 1 Gaucher disease and studied the effects of early initiation of alglucerase/imiglucerase therapy on these abnormalities. We found that the incidences of increased levels of IgG, IgA, and IgM at pediatric age, as observed in our patients, were 3.2-fold, 4.3-fold and 5.1-fold higher, respectively, than the incidence in adult patients, and correspond with disease s

The accumulation of chylous fluid in the abdominal cavity is an infrequent, yet alarming, complication in abdominal surgery. Laparoscopic fundoplication has assumed a central role in the surgical treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease and is significantly altering the balance of therapy toward more common and earlier surgical intervention. We report the case of a 67-year-old woman with gastroesophageal reflux disease and intense esophagitis who underwent a laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication in February 2000. The procedure was performed without apparent complications. Twenty days later, t

The Authors report a retrospective study of 74 splenectomies performed for hematologic diseases. The role of splenectomy has changed over recent years with increased indications for immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). The aim of this study was to assess indications to surgery in relation to clinical presentation with typical hemorrhagic features or severe thrombocytopenia only; interval between onset of symptoms and splenectomy; failure of medical management and complications from steroid administration; scintigraphic studies predictive of response to splenectomy and preoperative treatment

We relate our experience about ureteritis, especially non specific ureteritis. The traumatic, radiation ureteritis will be discussed in others chapters. Most cases of ureteritis are infective, and may be due to any of the organism normally found in urinary tract infections, particularly Escherichia Coli, staphylococci, streptococci, enterococci, proteus and pyocyaneus. It is really primary, but it usually ascending from an associated cystitis, descending from pyelonephritis, or due to direct spread from and adjacent inflammatory lesion such as appendicitis or salpingitis. The infection may als

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic malformations are rare benign congenital anomalies of the lymphatic system, most commonly affecting the head and neck. Gastrointestinal involvement is uncommon, and lymphatic malformations of the small intestine are particularly rare. Microcystic lymphatic malformations infiltrating the bowel wall may present with nonspecific clinical and radiological features, making preoperative diagnosis challenging. Reporting such cases is important to raise awareness of this rare entity as a potential cause of acute abdominal pain in children.

Recent diagnostic advances reveal that lymphatic disease in Noonan syndrome (NS) and other NS-like RASopathies often stems from central conducting lymphatic anomalies (CCLAs). The RAS/MAPK-ERK pathway plays a central role in lymphangiogenesis. Targeting this pathway with MEK-inhibitor trametinib has emerged as a promising therapeutic strategy for managing CCLAs in patients with NS-like RASopathies. This case series assessed the clinical outcomes of trametinib therapy in eight patients with NS-like RASopathies and CCLA, each offering unique insights into the therapeutic efficacy of MEK inhibiti

IMPORTANCE: Lymphatic malformations (LMs) are congenital vascular anomalies with limited treatment options. Eppikajutsuto, a traditional Japanese (Kampo) herbal medicine, is commonly used to treat inflammatory conditions and has been reported to reduce lesion volume in patients with LMs; however, data on its effectiveness in pediatric patients are needed.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of eppikajutsuto with reduced LM lesion volume in pediatric patients with LMs.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This open-label nonrandomized clinical trial was conducted from April 14, 2021, to Sept

BACKGROUND: Complex lymphatic anomalies are intractable lymphatic disorders, including generalized lymphatic anomaly (GLA), Gorham-Stout disease (GSD), and kaposiform lymphangiomatosis (KLA). The etiology of these diseases remains unknown and diagnosis is confused by their similar clinical findings. This study aimed to clarify the differences in clinical features and prognosis among GLA, KLA, and GSD, in Japanese patients.
PROCEDURE: Clinical features, radiological and pathological findings, treatment, and prognosis of patients were obtained from a questionnaire sent to 39 Japanese hospitals.

We present a case of a woman initially presenting with a neck mass and subsequently found to have generalized lymphatic anomaly with diffuse lymphatic dilation and proliferation involving the mediastinum and pericardium. Intrathoracic involvement of generalized lymphatic anomalies can lead to recurrent pleural effusions, pericardial effusions, and severe respiratory infections. These anomalies cannot be cured and significantly impact quality of life. Multidisciplinary involvement is crucial to maximize symptom relief as surgery to remove lymphatics can be morbid and the disease is usually recu
