Archegonous cystic odontoma: expanding the spectrum of hybrid odontogenic lesions.

A late adolescent female presented with a progressively enlarging swelling of the right posterior mandible over 5 months. Contrast-enhanced CT demonstrated a well-defined, expansile cystic lesion measuring 3.9×3.2×6.2 cm, with internal calcifications, significant cortical thinning and an associated impacted lower third molar. Given the circumscribed radiographic margins and clinically benign behaviour, complete surgical enucleation under general anaesthesia was undertaken. Histopathological examination revealed a cystic cavity lined by odontogenic epithelium with ameloblast-like basal cells, p

Sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma of the jaw: a case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma (SEF) is an extremely rare form of bone and soft tissue sarcoma. It occurs mainly in the deep soft tissue of the lower extremities, with few cases reported in the head and neck region. Tumors involving the oral and maxillofacial region (OMFR) and intraosseous examples are rare. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a 52-year-old male with a radiolucent lesion at the apex of the left mandibular second molar tooth with the clinical impression of a periapical granuloma. The patient has a history of SEF of the skull, which was treated by chemotherapy and

Compound odontoma and impaction of the lower left deciduous canine in a 4-year-old child: diagnosis and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Odontomas are the most common odontogenic tumours, often considered hamartomas rather than true neoplasms. These mixed tumours consist of fully differentiated dental tissues, including enamel, dentin, cementum, and pulp. Odontomas can be classified into compound and complex types. While typically asymptomatic, they are often discovered during routine radiographic examinations for delayed tooth eruption. The management of odontomas generally involves surgical removal, which is effective in resolving associated dental impactions. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a healthy 4-year-

Construct and discriminant validity testing of the FACE-Q Head and Neck Cancer Module for assessing speech and swallowing outcomes for patients undergoing maxillectomy or mandibulectomy.

BACKGROUND: The FACE-Q H&N is a patient reported outcome measure covering multiple constructs for patients with head and neck tumors. Additional testing is needed to determine suitability in assessing speech- and swallowing-related quality of life and function. METHODS: FACE-Q H&N, The M. D. Anderson Dysphagia Inventory (MDADI), and Speech Handicap Index (SHI) scores were collected from two patient cohorts who had undergone jaw reconstruction. Construct validity was assessed using convergent validity testing and known groups testing to assess discriminant validity. RESULTS: A priori hypothes

Clinical application of transoral and submental thyroidectomy (TOaST): a series of 54 human cases.

OBJECTIVE: A new endoscopic thyroidectomy approach-transoral and submental endoscopic thyroidectomy (TOaST)-was applied in clinical practice and considered an improved approach for endoscopic thyroid surgery via the oral approach. This paper discusses the feasibility and effectiveness of this surgical method. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on the clinical data of 54 patients who had undergone TOaST in the thyroid disease center of the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University between December 2020 and December 2021. The surgical data and techniques, complications, and

Nodular Pseudogout of the Skull Base Arising From the Temporomandibular Joint.

The authors report a case of a rare, large, nodular pseudogout which developed from the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).An 83-year-old female was referred to the hospital with swelling on her left cheek. Imaging studies revealed a large calcified mass surrounding the left mandibular condyle, partially destroying the adjoining bone and extending to the skull base. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed soft tissue masses with low signal intensity on T1- and T2-weighted images and were enhanced after intravenous gadolinium injection. The mass was clinically and radiologically suspected to be a n

Unilateral Creeping Destruction of Deformed Mandibular Ramus and Angle Associated with Extensive Facial Plexiform Neurofibroma in Neurofibromatosis Type 1: A Case Report with Analysis of the Literature for Diagnosing Osteolytic Events of the Mandible in Tumor-suppressor Gene Syndrome.

Neurofibromatosis type (NF1) is an autosomal dominant inherited tumor-suppressor gene syndrome of significant phenotypic variability with probable complete penetrance of the disease. Skeletal malformations of the skull belong to the phenotype of NF1. In the skull, defects of the calvaria and the sphenoid bone are diagnostically groundbreaking findings in NF1. Malformations of the facial skull are usually diagnosed in patients with NF1 in a topographical context with a plexiform neurofibroma (PNF). This report describes the rare occurrence of slowly advancing, unilateral destruction of proporti

Osteosarcoma of the Mandible Arising in Fibrous Dysplasia-A Case Report.

Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a benign fibro-osseous lesion that typically behaves as a painless, slowly expanding tumor. On rare occasion, FD will undergo malignant transformation. When sarcomatous change occurs, osteosarcoma is the typical variant, followed by chondrosarcoma and fibrosarcoma. The incidence of malignant change varies from 1 to 4% depending on whether the disease is mono-ostotic or polyostotic and syndromic (McCune-Albright or Jaffe-Lichtenstein syndrome). Despite the low incidence of malignant change, the potential lethality of this disease behooves treating surgeons to be keenly

Treatment of osteochondroma in the mandibular condyle and secondary dentofacial deformities using surgery combined with orthodontics in adults.

PURPOSE: Osteochondroma is a benign tumor that is rare in the craniofacial region. When it does occur, the condyle and coronoid process have been the most commonly affected sites. The secondary progressive malocclusion and facial asymmetry will be common physical signs in most cases. The traditional surgical treatment of osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle has been condylectomy, with or without reconstruction of the condyle. We believe more attention should be paid to restoring joint function, improving the facial appearance, correcting malocclusion, and re-establishing harmony among them

Histopathological spectrum of bone lesions associated with dental implant failure: osteomyelitis and beyond.

Early or late post-implant placement complications are usually localized infectious/inflammatory processes and treated accordingly. If the healing process does not take place within a reasonable timeframe, the possibility of a pathologic process beyond localized infection/inflammation should be suspected. We describe a radiological/histopathological spectrum of bony lesions ranging from inflammatory to malignant lesions surrounding failed dental implants. Five cases of mandibular dental implant failure that clinically, radiologically and histopathologically appeared to be inflammatory processe

Central odontogenic fibroma-like tumors, hypodontia, and enamel dysplasia: review of the literature and report of a case.

A patient with multiple odontogenic fibroma-like tumors in the mandible and enamel dysplasia is presented, bringing the total number of cases reported in the literature to 3. In addition to these manifestations, this case had hypodontia. The absence of associated teeth, the size of the lesions, the lingual expansion, and the green-yellow polarization of collagen with Picrosirius stains supported the neoplastic nature of the central odontogenic fibroma-like tumors in the case presented. Laminated psammomatous deposits distinguished the tumors from the World Health Organization-type central odon

Occipitoparietal bone flap for mandibular reconstruction.

Mandibular reconstruction may prove to be a difficult problem. The use of vascularized bone flaps for mandibular reconstruction has shown better results than bone grafts because they offer solid bone union together with rapid recovery of form and function. The occipital vessels, from the external carotid artery and the jugular vein up to their site of emergence in the occipital fascia, have proved easy to dissect at the neck after section of sternocleidomastoid and splenius capitis longus and brevis muscles. We were able to obtain a long pedicle to move the fascia to distant sites with or with

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor: clinicopathologic and ultrastructural concepts.

Two cases of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor have been presented, along with a review of the literature. One tumor had a rather typical presentation, occurring in a 12-year-old in association with an impacted canine tooth. Subsequent electron microscopic evaluation of this case provided corroboration of other recently published findings. In this case there was a striking accumulation of what could have been secretory granules at the pole of the cell nearest a "duct-like" space. This cell had ultrastructural characteristics in common with a preameloblast. The second case occurred in a more unusua

Ameloblastoma of the Mandible With Carcinoma Transformation in a Young Adult.

Ameloblastic carcinoma (AC) is a rare and aggressive malignant epithelial odontogenic tumor making up less than 1% of malignant head and neck tumors. The majority of cases occur in the mandible with a minority occurring in the maxilla. Most occur de novo, while rare cases of AC have resulted from transformation from ameloblastoma. Here, we present a case in which a 30-year-old man presented with proptosis and a recurrent right temporal mass, which had been previously diagnosed as ameloblastoma on surgical pathology. CT findings demonstrated local invasion, and he was subsequently taken to the

Epidermal nevus and ameloblastoma: a rare association.

Epidermal nevi are clinical manifestations of a malformation affecting the embryonic ectoderm. They appear as linear verrucous lesions and are more often located in the skin of the trunk or the extremities. Rarely, verrucous lesions affect the oral mucosa. Epidermal nevi can be a component of epidermal nevus syndrome (ENS), which is characterized by malformations involving several organs, such as the central nervous system. ENS is rarely associated with other solid tumors. We present the case of a patient affected by ENS who developed maxillary and mandibular ameloblastomas. Epidermal nevi wer

Resolution of pain and complete healing of mandibular osteoradionecrosis using pentoxifylline and tocopherol: a case report.

The radiation-induced fibroatrophic process (RIF) is a time-dependent adverse sequela to high-dose radiotherapy that can result in irreversible tissue death and bone exposure in the irradiated tissue. Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is a late effect of RIF, described as bony exposure present for more than 3 months that can occur in 20% of patients irradiated for head and neck cancer. The intractable characteristics of ORN make both management and resolution of the disease process challenging, with 25% of cases recurring despite aggressive treatment with resection and reconstruction of the necrotic bo

Numb chin syndrome as a manifestation of possible breast cancer metastasis around dental implants.

Numb chin syndrome, sometimes called numb lip syndrome, is an uncommon but well-recognized symptom in medical oncology. It may be a metastatic neurologic manifestation of malignancy, often with no clinically visible pathologic finding. The authors report a numb chin syndrome as a manifestation possible breast cancer metastasis around dental implants in a 69-year-old woman. The patient was presented with complaint of numbness in the lower jaw. Medical anamnesis revealed a metastatic breast carcinoma (CA). Radiographic imaging with conventional panoramic radiography and cone beam computed tomogr
