Timescale of evolution of late radiation injury after postoperative radiotherapy of breast cancer patients.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the incidence and prevalence of various signs of late morbidity, their time of appearance and pattern of progression during an observation period up to 34 years in breast cancer patients treated with postoperative radiation therapy after radical mastectomy. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A group of 71 breast cancer patients received in 1963-1965 aggressive postoperative telecobalt therapy to the parasternal, axillary, and supraclavicular lymph node regions after total mastectomy and axillary clearance. None of the patients received chemotherapy either prior to, or after the irrad

No Intense 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose Uptake in Positron Emission Tomography of a Metastatic Orbital Tumor From Breast Carcinoma.

A 47-year-old woman with a history of invasive ductal carcinoma in the right breast reported decreased vision in the OD for the past 3 months. Her best corrected visual acuity was 0.1 OD and 1.0 OS. T1-weighted MRI revealed enlargement of the right lateral rectus muscle with a faint tumor outline and no contrast enhancement in the lesion. F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography did not demonstrate intense uptake at the lesion. Because the patient demonstrated optic neuropathy due to compression by the enlarged muscle, balanced orbital decompression (of the deep lateral and medial orb

Successful laparoscopic investigation and resection of solitary colonic metastasis from breast cancer (with video).

Metastasis to gastrointestinal tract from breast cancer is an uncommon situation. We report a case of a 52-year-old woman who had a mastectomy for solid-tubular carcinoma of the breast 16 years ago and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy for metastatic ovarian tumours 5 years ago, was incidentally found to have colonic metastatic tumour detected by positron emission tomography/CT (PET/CT) during follow-up. After identifying a definite location of the tumour in the ascending colon under laparoscopic investigation, laparoscopy-assisted partial colectomy was successfully performed. Histopathology of

[Tubulolobular carcinoma of breast: a clinicopathologic study of 8 cases].

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical and morphological features as well as immunophenotype of tubulolobular carcinoma of the breast (TLC). METHODS: Eight cases of TLC were retrieved from 97 cases of invasive lobular carcinoma between January 2005 and March 2010 in the Peking Union Medical College Hospital. The clinical features and pathologic findings were studied and immunohistochemistry was performed for the expression of ER, PR, HER2, p53, E-cadherin, CK34βE12 and CK8. RESULTS: Among the breast cancer patients, the incidence of TLC was about 1.0% (8/880). The mean age of the patients was 59 y

A method of breast reconstruction with a deepithelialized TRAM flap via the abdominal approach for failed implant salvage in postmastectomy patients.

Postmastectomy reconstruction of breasts is one of the most commonly performed procedures of the plastic surgeon today. Tissue expansion with subsequent implant placement, transverse rectus abdominis musculocutaneous (TRAM) flaps, latissimus dorsi flaps, gluteal flaps, Ruben's fat pad flaps, and free flaps from other areas have all been utilized with consistently good aesthetic results. One special class of patient is the woman who has undergone breast reconstruction with tissue expansion, with or without subsequent implant placement, who than receives external beam radiation therapy. Capsular

Axillary dissection in breast cancer revisited.

The pathological status of the axillary nodes remains the single most determining factor for survival, local recurrence and disease-free interval in operable breast cancer. Radical axillary dissection results in better local control with or without systemic disease in all operable cases. In pathologically negative cases, radical axillary dissection decreases local recurrence rates and perhaps prolongs disease-free survival. In pathologically positive cases, radical axillary dissection improves local control only. Radical axillary dissection avoids axillary irradiation and so decreases the risk

India's Draft National Health Research Policy 2026: A Visionary Framework for Transforming the National Health Research Ecosystem.

Chemoport devices are commonly used for the administration of chemotherapeutic medication in cancer patients and can also be used for total parenteral nutrition and long term intravenous therapy. They are usually inserted through the internal jugular vein or the subclavian vein. The common complications of the procedure include pneumothorax, bleeding, arrhythmia and venous thrombosis. One of the rare complications of chemoport is catheter fracture/dislodgement and subsequent migration, with an incidence of 0.1-2.1%. Other rare complications are vascular erosion and embolization, vocal cord pal

Monitoring the Upward Trend of Tumor Marker Levels in Breast Cancer Patients after Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Tumor markers refer to a class of substances that are characteristic of malignant tumor cells or abnormally produced by malignant tumor cells, and can reflect the occurrence and development of tumors. METHODS: We report a case of breast cancer where the level of tumor markers after radical mastectomy has been monitored. The physician questioned the significantly elevated carbohydrate antigen 50 (CA50) results. We use different detection platforms to assess the possibility of false elevation of CA50. We simultaneously use PET-CT and other examinations to identify the cause of eleva

Poland syndrome combined with breast cancer: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Poland syndrome is an occasional congenital malformation characterized by unilateral chest wall dysplasia and ipsilateral upper limb abnormalities. An association between Poland syndrome and breast cancer has been reported, but no clear etiological link between Poland syndrome and breast tumors has been established. We report a case of Poland syndrome combined with breast cancer and analyzed the clinical features of breast cancer in this case and its influence on the choice of treatment for breast cancer. CASE DESCRIPTION: In February 2022, we admitted a 47-year-old woman with Pol

Infiltrative solid papillary carcinoma of the breast with axillary lymph node metastasis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Solid papillary carcinoma (SPC) is a rare breast papillary tumor variant. The main histological features of SPC consist of neoplastic cell-rich nodules with thin fibrovascular cores, often accompanied by mucous secretion and neuroendocrine differentiation. Infiltrative solid papillary carcinoma (ISPC) tumor cells have an invasive, map-like growth pattern with serrated irregular growth. Due to its unique clinicopathological features, SPC is classified as two pathological tissue types based on the 2019 WHO classification of breast tumors: SPC in situ and ISPC. CASE PRESENTATION: We

Metastatic Carcinoma of the Breast Presenting as Gingival Swelling in the Maxilla: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Metastatic cancers in the oral cavity are usually very rare and are usually an indication of widespread malignancy. In some cases, oral metastasis was found to be the first presentation of distant site tumours. Even though oral metastatic lesions may be found anywhere in the oral cavity, they commonly present in the posterior areas of the jaw bones. Among the soft tissues, the gingiva is the most common site. The presence of inflammation in the gingiva and the role of periodontal microbiota are suggested to play a role in the attraction of metastatic cells. The purpose of this case

Stewart-Treves syndrome: Magnetic resonance imaging data compared with pathological results from a single center.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data of patients with Stewart-Treves Syndrome (STS), and to compare them with the corresponding pathological data. A total of 4,289 cases of secondary upper limb lymphedema (LE) from a single center, including 5 female cases of STS who underwent modified-radical post mastectomy, were included in the study. All cases were diagnosed pathologically, and by conventional and contrast-enhanced (ce)MRI scans. A total of 43 tumor nodules (Φ ≥4 mm) were examined. According to the immunohistochemical results, the 5 cases o

Locally-advanced primary neuroendocrine carcinoma of the breast: case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Primary neuroendocrine carcinoma of the breast is a heterogeneous group of rare tumors with positive immunoreactivity to neuroendocrine markers in at least 50% of cells. Diagnosis also requires that other primary sites be ruled out and that the same tumor show histological evidence of a breast in situ component. Primary neuroendocrine carcinoma of the breast rarely presents as locally advanced disease and less frequently with such widespread metastatic disease as described herein. The review accompanying this case report is the first to provide an overview of all the cases of prima

The lateral thoracic artery revisited.

BACKGROUND: Although the variations in the origin of the branches of the axillary and subclavian arteries have been well documented, little information regarding the highly variable lateral thoracic artery (LTA) is available. Descriptions of the LTA variations may prove useful during procedures of the lateral aspects of the thorax such as reconstructive plastic surgery and modified radical mastectomy. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine the anatomy of the LTA and offer an accurate account of its variability. METHODS: The entire course and distribution of the LTA was examined in 420

Study on the skip metastasis of axillary lymph nodes in breast cancer and their relation with Gli1 expression.

The skip metastasis (SM) of axillary lymph nodes (ALN) in breast cancer is an important phenomenon which is crucial to determine the correct choice of surgical resection. The mechanism of SM of ALN is unclear. Gli1 protein is a core epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) regulatory factor that plays essential roles in both development and disease processes and has been associated with metastasis in carcinomas. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinicopathological characteristics of SM and evaluate the significance of Gli1 expression in breast cancer patients with metastasis of A

Metastatic breast carcinoma in the mandible presenting as a periodontal abscess: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Tumors can metastasize to the oral cavity and affect the jaws, soft tissue and salivary glands. Oral cavity metastases are considered rare and represent approximately 1% of all oral malignancies. Because of their rarity and atypical clinical and radiographic appearance, metastatic lesions are considered a diagnostic challenge. The purpose of this report is to present a rare case of a metastatic breast carcinoma mimicking a periodontal abscess in the mandible. CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old Caucasian woman was referred to our clinic for evaluation of bisphosphonate-induced jaw
