Liability of ultrasound in maxillary sinus disease.

For the first time liability of of ultrasonography in diagnosing paranasal sinus disease was controlled in 256 patients with acute maxillary sinusitis as compared to irrigation findings and in 150 patients with persistent maxillary sinus disease using x-rays, sinoscopy and sinumanometry as controls. Confidence in diagnosing the presence of discharge ranges up 90%. In cases of total opacity of the sinus, ultrasonography helps differentiating mucosal swelling, tumor and discharge.

[Microbiology of acute exacerbation chronic sinusitis in adults].

The bacterial flora taken by sinus puncture from 115 patients with uni and bilateral acute exacerbation of chronic maxillary sinusitis was analyzed. Germ-free culture was obtained in 49 cases (40%) and in 69 cases (60%) bacteria were isolated from all sinus aspirates. Microbiological evaluation shows, that in majority of cases (90%) of acute exacerbation of chronic sinusitis there were pathogenic bacteria namely aerobic and anaerobic. The most frequent pathogens isolated from the aspirates were; Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylo…

Three cases of osteoma and an osseous fibroma of the paranasal sinuses of horses in South Africa.

Four horses were presented to the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital with histories of facial asymmetry, nasal discharge or obstruction of normal nasal passage airflow. Radiographic examination of the maxillary sinuses of 2 cases revealed well circumscribed, unilateral, mineralised masses; the other 2 cases showed less mineralisation. The masses were accessed for further investigation by surgically created frontonasal bone flaps or trephination of the maxillary sinuses. Diagnosis of osteoma was confirmed histopathologically in 3 of the cases and of ossifying fibroma in the 4th. Two hor

Toothache with a multifactorial etiology: a case report.

A case report of orofacial pain originating from both dental and nondental conditions is presented. The spontaneous throbbing pain initiated … ent, the patient was free from pain. The final diagnosis of this case, in addition to pulpitis, was maxillary sinusitis with chronic rhinitis. The multiple factors associated with the etiology made the diagnosis difficult. The mechanism of referred pain from the maxillary sinus and paranasal mucosa to the maxillary teeth and face is discussed.

Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma, or schneiderian carcinoma arising from an aspergillosis: a case history.

The sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma or schneiderian carcinoma is a rare, malignant, aggressive tumour of the maxillary sinuses with an unknown aetiology. Its site and clinical symptoms can simulate chronic sinusitis, and radiographs suggest severe osteonecrotic-type destruction. Only histological and cellular investigations can confirm the diagnosis. We describe a 62-year-old woman with no previous medical or surgical history who presented with unilateral dental pain and chronic sinusitis. She was diagnosed with sinonasal carcinoma and had a hemimaxillectomy and radiotherapy.

[A clinical study of chronic perennial and permanent rhino-sinusal dysfunction. II. Clinical pattern of different pathologies].

Following a univariate analysis of the clinical features of chronic perannual and permanent rhinosinus dysfunction, the aim of this work was to complete the study by a multivariate analysis. The analysis was based on the three main pathologies retained (chronic sinusitis, bilateral symmetrical pansinusitis, anterior facial sinusitis). Each pathological situation was divided into subgroups, Phadiatop positive or negative chronic rhinitis, bilateral symmetrical chronic panethmoiditis or stage I, II or III naso-sinus polyposis, maxillary sinusitis or anterior facial pansinusitis. The clinical fea…

Composite three-layer closure of oral antral communication with 10 months follow-up-a case study.

PURPOSE: We propose a 3-layer composite closure technique for an oral antral communication (OAC) while avoiding secondary donor site morbidity. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A patient had developed a 1-cm OAC after extraction of right maxillary first molar. The patient subsequently developed acute maxillary sinusitis. The patient was taken to the operating room, and a Caldwell-Luc procedure was performed. The bony window from the Caldwell-Luc was "press fit" over the bony OAC defect. Soft tissue closure was then achieved with a buccal fat pad flap and a buccal mucosal advancement flap. The patient wa…

Effect of pulsed ultrasound on chronic rhinosinusitis: a case report.

This case report demonstrates that pulsed ultrasound (US), when used for a total of 20 treatment sessions, provided symptom relief to a patient with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). A 16-year-old boy with a 12-month history of rhinosinusitis and candidate for sinus surgery was referred for ultrasound therapy. He presented with facial pain/pressure, nasal obstruction, and postnasal drip (total sinusitis score=7). On computed tomographic (CT) scanning, the total opacification of the right maxillary sinus was observed. The ostiomeatal complex was occluded (total CT score=6). Pulsed ultrasound was ad

[Optimal outpatient treatment of maxillary inflammation].

To improve treatment of outpatients with maxillary inflammation (MI) it is recommended, in case of failure of previous standard conservative therapy, to drain the maxillary sinus for a long time. Catheter should be inserted into the maxillary sinus for maximum time but not longer than for 10-12 days. When inflammation is not corrected by the first course of therapy, the drainage is removed and the patients receive conditioning, mucolytic and immunostimulating therapy in combination with physiotherapy for 8-10 days with a following another course of drainage. In persistent maxillary sinusitis, …

Clinical and dosimetric predictors of radiation-induced rhinosinusitis following VMAT for nasopharyngeal carcinoma: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to investigate the clinical and dosimetric factors associated with radiation-induced rhinosinusitis, and further elucidate the optimal dose-volume constraints for nasopharyngeal cancer patients who underwent volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT). METHODS: A retrospective review of 196 nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients who underwent definitive VMAT between August 2018 and May 2021 was conducted. Both clinical and dose-volume histogram (DVH) data of NPC patients without rhinosinusitis at baseline were selected for analysis. RESULTS: The cumulative incidence of post

Aspergillosis of the maxillary sinus associated with a zygomatic implant.

BACKGROUND: The use of a specially designed implant to be anchored in the zygomatic bone has been proposed in the literature as an alternative to bone grafting in the prosthetic rehabilitation of the severely resorbed maxilla, an option that has few postoperative complications. However, some complications can arise, such as the fungal infection the authors describe in this article. CASE DESCRIPTION: The authors report a case of aspergillosis of the maxillary sinus after zygomatic implant placement. Twelve months after placement of the implant, the patient returned with symptoms of sinusitis,

Sinusitis of actinomycosis infection : a case report.

Actinomycosis is an infection caused by anaerobic bacteria, primarily from the genus Actinomyces, which normally colonize the several regions including the mouth. Disruption of mucosa may lead to infection of virtually any site, but reports of involvement of the sinuses are rare. We report a case of an actinomycosis infection in the unilateral maxillary sinus. A 47-year-old female visited our hospital with a complaint of mild pain of left buccal region. Computed tomography (CT) revealed that the left maxillary and anterior ethmoidal sinus cavities were opacified along with a calcified fragment

Anatomy of the paranasal sinuses of the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus Linnaeus, 1758) and radiographic positioning for diagnosis of these structures.

BACKGROUND: Callithrix jacchus, it is a species highly targeted by wild animal traffickers and, when apprehended, they need veterinary care. For safe therapeutic procedures, knowledge of anatomy is essential, as well as for diagnostic by imaging, good radiographic positioning is essential. METHODS: The anatomy of the paranasal sinuses and the radiographic projections was described using 10 carcasses of common marmosets. Radiographs were taken in two panoramic views of their head: profile and frontal-naso. For the anatomical study, paramedian and transverse macroscopic sections and microscopic

[The usefulness of computer-aided navigation in endoscopic sinus and nasal surgery].

The usefulness of computer-aided navigation in endoscopic sinus and nasal surgery. Endoscopic surgeries of the sinuses are among the most difficult procedures in otolaryngology. The progress of endoscopic techniques led to reduction of invasiveness enabling the surgeon to perform precise procedures with minimal tissue traumatization. The systems for computer-aided endoscopic surgery combine preprocedural MRI or CT data with information regarding current location of the surgical tools. The aim of this study was to assess the usefulness of electromagnetic navigation system ENTrak 3500 in endosco

Localization of orbit in patients with maxillary sinus hypoplasia: a radiological study.

PURPOSE: We aimed to investigate the medial and inferior localization of orbit in patients with maxillary sinus hypoplasia using paranasal computerized tomography. METHODS: We included 76 patients who had a hypoplastic maxillary sinus at least on one side, and 76 patients with normal maxillary sinuses (control group). To assess the localization of orbit, we measured the distances from middle meatal antrostomy point to medial border of orbital medial wall and to the lower border of orbital floor in all patients. We performed statistical comparisons between the groups. RESULTS: Of 76 patients,

Endoscopic Modified Medial Maxillectomy for Fungal Ball of the Hypoplastic Maxillary Sinus With Bony Hypertrophy.

Sinus fungal ball is defined as noninvasive chronic rhino-sinusitis with a clump of mold in the paranasal sinuses, typically affecting the maxillary sinus. Fairly good outcomes of endoscopic surgery have been reported where the ball is removed through the antrostomy. However, the affected sinus tends to have a smaller cavity and thicker bony walls. As such, it is often challenging to maintain a window size that is sufficient to control possible recurrence. The endoscopic modified medial maxillectomy procedure was applied to a 61-year old and a 70-year old female patient with maxillary sinus fu
