Analysis of Traffic Accident-Related Facial Trauma.

The consequences of facial trauma remain of great significance both functionally and esthetically. Traffic accident-related facial trauma is a frequent and significant cause of maxillofacial injury. The purpose of this study was to determine the natural history of traffic accident-related facial injuries in 846 patients over a 10-year period at a regional emergency center. The authors report a retrospective study of 846 patients with facial trauma from traffic accidents. The medical records of these patients were reviewed and analyzed to determine clinical characteristics, treatments, and outc

Lingual Nerve Measurements in Cadaveric Dissections: Clinical Applications.

PURPOSE: Lingual nerve (LN) injury is quite prevalent despite its long-known anatomic course. The purpose of this study was to accurately predict the LN pathway by identifying and measuring close anatomic landmarks; these measurements should help lessen the incidence of LN injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: LN dissection was carried out on 15 halved cadaver skulls (total, 28 specimens). RESULTS: On average, the LN position was approximately 7 mm below the alveolar crest at the distal end of the mandibular second molar, 5.5 mm anterior to the lingula, and 14.6 mm distal to the alveolar crest at t

Domestic violence: no place for a smile.

Because dentists routinely assess a patient's head, neck and mouth, they have a unique and excellent opportunity to recognize whether or not a patient is being abused. This article seeks to enlist the collaboration of the dental community in the effort to prevent domestic/intimate partner violence and provide more information about the signs and symptoms of domestic violence injuries, including strangulation, which is often overlooked by medical and dental professionals. Strangulation has only been identified in recent years as one of the most lethal forms of domestic violence. Unconsciousness

Clinical and diagnostic imaging outcomes of mandibular fracture management in 109 cats.

INTRODUCTION: Mandibular injuries are a common occurrence in cats that are presented for maxillofacial trauma. Timely assessment and treatment of these injuries directly impacts a cat's return to function. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on a population of 109 cats that were presented for evaluation and treatment of mandibular trauma. Medical records and diagnostic imaging were reviewed to determine mandibular fracture location, morphology, and treatment. Follow-up data were obtained from repeat clinical examination and diagnostic imaging. RESULTS: The most commonly injured anat

Modified Labial Button Technique for Maintaining Occlusion After Caudal Mandibular Fracture/Temporomandibular Joint Luxation in the Cat.

Maxillofacial trauma in cats often results in mandibular symphyseal separation in addition to injuries of the caudal mandible and/or temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Caudal mandibular and TMJ injuries are difficult to access and stabilize using direct fixation techniques, thus indirect fixation is commonly employed. The immediate goals of fixation include stabilization for return to normal occlusion and function with the long-term objective of bony union. Indirect fixation techniques commonly used for stabilization of caudal mandibular and temporomandibular joint fracture/luxation include maxill

[Management of accidental tooth root displacement into the mandibular canal during tooth extraction].

The accidental displacement of tooth roots into the mandibular canal is a serious complication during tooth extractions in oral and maxillofacial surgery, often resulting in direct damage to the structural and functional integrity of the inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle (IANB). This article reviews the anatomical features of the mandibular canal, the IANB, and adjacent tooth roots; identifies high-risk factors and anatomically vulnerable sites for root displacement; and outlines the clinical manifestations and radiographic characteristics of intraoperative root intrusion into the mandibu

Frontal sinus volume predicts incidence of brain contusion in patients with head trauma.

BACKGROUND: The function of the paranasal sinuses is a topic of debate. One hypothesis suggested has been that sinuses act as a "crumple zone," serving to protect the contents of the head from impact. In this study, we examine the interactions of the frontal sinus and the brain in the setting of head trauma. Our formal hypothesis is that frontal sinus volume is less in head trauma patients with contusion than in head trauma patients without contusion. METHODS: Computed tomographic (CT) scans of patients who sustained blunt head trauma performed at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center f

Techniques for dissection of the facial nerve in benign parotid surgery: a cross specialty survey of oral and maxillofacial and ear nose and throat surgeons in the UK.

We investigated techniques of dissection of the facial nerve currently being used in parotid surgery for benign disease in oral and maxillofacial (OMF) and ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgery. A postal questionnaire was sent to 300 OMF and 300 ENT consultants and 49% were returned(171(57%) OMF and 123 (41%) ENT. The antegrade technique was used routinely by 209 surgeons (87%), the retrograde technique by 9 (4%), and both techniques combined by 21 surgeons (9%). The antegrade technique was used by 135 surgeons (56%) for revision parotidectomy, by 193 (81%) for limited superficial parotidectomy,

Marin-Amat Syndrome: A Case Report of a Rare Facial Synkinesis Following Traumatic Facial Nerve Injury.

Marin-Amat syndrome is a rare form of facial synkinesis resulting from aberrant connections between the trigeminal and facial nerves. This condition manifests as involuntary eyelid closure upon voluntary jaw movement. It is distinct from the more common Marcus Gunn jaw-winking syndrome (MGJWS), which involves upper eyelid elevation during mastication. Here, we reported a case of a 64-year-old woman who developed this syndrome following combat-related maxillofacial trauma to the lateral mandible, which resulted in a left facial nerve injury. After her mandibular fractures were stabilized using

Mechanism of transverse fracture of the skull base caused by blunt force to the mandible.

Transverse fracture of the skull base is common both in the crushing of temporal regions of the skull and in the case of force acting on one temporal region. However, the mechanism of transverse skull base fracture caused by maxillofacial force has not been fully clarified. To provide an injury identification basis for forensic pathologists and clinicians, this paper combines accident reconstruction and finite element analysis methods to study the injury mechanism of an incomplete transverse fracture of skull base after the injured individual's mandible was subjected to violence in a traffic a

Forensic aspects of maxillofacial radiology.

Radiology has been used extensively in conventional dental identification, anatomically based identification and identification using maxillofacial skeletal landmarks such as the frontal sinus. Examples of these are well documented in the literature. The purpose of this paper was to revisit the methods where radiographic methods may be used to determine identity using the teeth, the root structures and the frontal sinuses. Additionally suggestions are offered for management of radiography in mass disasters and cases where age determination is required. Computer assisted tomography can be used
