Oral Myiasis is a Potential Risk in Patients with Special Health Care Needs.

Myiasis is a rare disease caused by invasion of tissue by larvae of certain dipteran flies. It is more common in countries with tropical climate. Oral myiasis is not a very common condition and many clinicians are unaware of its diagnosis. Common predisposing factors are poor oral hygiene, halitosis, trauma, senility, learning disabilities, physically and mentally challenged conditions. Oral myiasis can lead to rapid tissue destruction and disfigurement and requires immediate treatment. Treatment consists of manual removal of maggots from oral cavity after application of chemical agents. Use o…

Control of the myiasis-producing fly, Lucilia sericata, with Egyptian essential oils.

BACKGROUND: Myiasis caused by Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is widely distributed throughout the world and affects both humans and animals. In addition, L. sericata larvae and adults may play a role in spreading causal agents of mycobacterial infections. Therefore, it is important to establish new and safe alternative methods of controlling this blowfly. METHODS: The insecticidal effectiveness of four commercially available essential oils [lettuce (Lactuca sativa), chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), anise (Pimpinella anisum), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)] against third larval…

Myiasis in a dog shelter in Greece: epidemiological and clinical features and therapeutic considerations.

The paper describes features of myiasis in a cohort of 163 dogs in an animal shelter, monitored over 3.5 years (4 fly activity seasons). Seven dogs (4 males, 3 females) were presented with myiasis; two dogs were presented twice with infestation in different areas of their body. The overall incidence rate (IR) of myiasis was 5.8 cases per 10(3) animal-months at risk, or else 0.0058 case per animal-month at risk. Six cases occurred from May to July and three from August to October, giving IRs of 7.7 per 10(3) animal-months and 3.9 per 10(3) animal-months, respectively, and an IR ratio of 1.97 (P…

Myiasis of the scalp due to Dermatobia hominis in a traveler returning from Brazil.

This article describes a case of myiasis by Dermatobia hominis diagnosed in a young Italian man returning from a vacation through Brazil. Considering the increasing number of travels to tropical and subtropical areas, clinicians in nonendemic areas must think about the possibility of imported unusual infestations during their daily practice.

Myiasis by Lucilia silvarum (Calliphoridae) in amphibian species in boreal Alberta, Canada.

We report myiasis by Lucilia silvarum with an overall prevalence of 0.9% in amphibian populations in boreal Alberta. In the period 1998--1999, we documented L. silvarum infestations in wild populations of wood frog (Rana sylvatica), boreal chorus frog (Pseudacris maculata), boreal toad (Bufo boreas boreas), and Canadian toad (B. hemiophrys). We believe this is the first record of this parasite from boreal and Canadian toads. Almost all previous records of L. silvarum parasitism in North America indicate that myiasis is fatal to an anuran host. Here, we provide the first record of adult individ…

An urban epidemic of human myiasis caused by Dermatobia hominis in French Guiana.

We report the onset of an urban epidemic of human myiasis caused by Dermatobia hominis. To our knowledge, this is the first urban epidemic described for D. hominis. The epidemic was most likely related to exceptional weather conditions and notably high rainfall in January 2000, which may have facilitated the maturation of the pupae.

Role of ivermectin in the treatment of severe orbital myiasis due to Cochliomyia hominivorax.

We describe 2 patients with severe orbital myiasis due to Cochliomyia hominivorax (of the order Diptera and the family Calliphoridae) who had underlying skin carcinomas and were treated with oral ivermectin and debridement. We suggest that ivermectin plays an important role in the treatment of severe cases of myiasis.

Oral myiasis in a child by the reindeer warble fly larva Hypoderma tarandi.

We describe a case of human oral myiasis by a first-stage larva of the reindeer warble fly, Hypoderma (Oedemagena) tarandi (L.) (Diptera: Oestridae), in a 12-year-old girl. In September the patient complained of erythema, swelling and conjunctivitis of the right eyelid. Symptoms subsided spontaneously but re-occurred in October. In December she presented with acute swelling of the right corner of the mouth. Later that day a living larva protruded from this swelling. The patient had been on vacation in Norway during the previous summer months.

Nosocomial nasal myiasis owing to Cochliomyia hominivorax: a case in French Guiana.

Abstract The larval stages of the fly Cochliomyia hominivorax are responsible for myiasis, which primarily affects wounds. We report the case of a bed-ridden patient with dementia who developed right nasal myiasis during his stay at Cayenne Hospital. Progression was favorable, but the nasal pyramid was partially destroyed. In zones where this fly is endemic, particular attention should be given to hospitalized patients with wounds and consciousness problems.

Myiasis in Kuwait: nosocomial infections caused by lucilia sericata and Megaselia scalaris.

Myiasis, the invasion of live human tissue by larvae of Diptera, is reported in the nasopharynx and a leg wound in two patients who were hospitalized for more than 72 hours in Mubarak Al-Kabeer Teaching Hospital in Kuwait City, Kuwait. On the fourth and fifth days after a 10-year-old Kuwaiti boy was admitted to the hospital intensive care unit in a bloodied and comatose state following a traffic accident, 'worms' that came out of his nostrils were fixed, cleared, and identified as second and third instar of Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae). After 14 days, 'worms' were seen in the orig…

Autochthonous furuncular myiasis in the United States: case report and literature review.

Most cases of furuncular myiasis in the United States are acquired during travel to other countries. Autochthonous cases are infrequently reported and are most often due to accidental infestation of humans by larvae of flies belonging to the genus Cuterebra, commonly known as "rabbit bot flies" or "rodent bot flies." We describe a case of furuncular myiasis due to Cuterebra larvae in the hand of a patient residing in Wisconsin. The infestation was acquired while the patient gardened near a seepage lake during August. The patient developed papular lesions on the hand and received therapy for pr…

Cutaneous myiasis of the breast: mammographic and us features-report of five cases.

Five patients with breast myiasis underwent mammography, and three also underwent ultrasonography (US). Mammography revealed indistinct masses in all patients, with associated pairs of microcalcifications in three. US showed each larva as a fusiform hyperechoic mass surrounded by a hypoechoic halo, which included larval movement in one patient. These imaging features of breast myiasis facilitate correct diagnosis.

Oral myiasis caused by hypoderma bovis larvae in a child: a case report.

Myiasis is the invasion of living tissue of humans and other mammals by the eggs or larvae of flies of the order of Diptera. It occurs mainly in the tropic, and is associated with inadequate public and personal hygiene. Oral myiasis in humans appears to be rare. This article records a case of oral myiasis caused by larvae of Hypoderma bovis. Two different pathologic soft tissue sockets were observed in the vestibular sulcus at the level of the both deciduous laterals along the deep upper lip tissues.

Myiasis due to Cardylobia anthropophaga, the 'Tumbu fly' in a Sri Lankan infant.

A case of myiasis due to Cardylobia anthropophaga (Blanchard) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), the 'Tumbu fly', is reported for the first time in Sri Lanka, in a 10 month old infant. The infection was acquired in Zimbabwe. The child had appeared 'unwell' for nearly a week before the detection of the skin lesions. The main clinical features were irritability, restlessness and the appearance of three small lumps on the scalp behind the right ear. Identification of the fly larva and the management of myiasis are discussed.

Intraruminal controlled release of cyromazine for the prevention of Lucilia cuprina myiasis in sheep.

The efficacy of cyromazine, continuously released from intraruminal capsules at dose rates from 0.5 to 2 mg kg-1 d-1, was evaluated against implants of eggs and first instar larvae of Lucilia cuprina on Merino sheep. Estimates from the non-linear relationship between the success of implants and plasma concentrations showed that 95 per cent protection of sheep could be achieved at a mean release rate of 1.39 mg kg-1 d-1 cyromazine which gave rise to a mean plasma concentration of 0.26 mg litre-1. Present formulations allowed protection for about 90 days in a 40 kg sheep. The 'square wave' type

Observations on Sudanese camel nasal myiasis caused by the larvae of Cephalopina titillator.

Forty-four camels slaughtered at Nyala abattoir, western Sudan, were examined for infection with the larvae of Cephalopina titillator. The infection rate was found to be 100 p. 100. The parasitic burden ranged between 8-243 per animal. They were recovered throughout the year. The first stage larvae were noticed from December to May, indicating the breeding season of the fly. The larvae were found to cause visible pathological lesions on the nasopharynx. These were also demonstrated histopathologically. Bacteriological examinations revealed the presence of Pasteurella haemolytica and Klebsiella

Cutaneous myiasis. Immunohistologic and ultrastructural morphometric features of a human botfly lesion.

This study documents the immunohistologic and ultrastructural morphometric features of a case of cutaneous myiasis due to Dermatobia hominis. The mixed host inflammatory response surrounding the larvae included lymphoblasts, eosinophils, activated fibroblasts, mature histiocytes, mast cells, plasma cells, and Langerhans cells, indicating a complex interactive immunologic response to the botfly parasite. Immunotyping revealed that the dominant dermal cells were activated (Ia+) T-helper cells. Although the strikingly elevated T-helper/T-suppressor cell ratio might suggest a monoclonal infiltrate…
