Comorbidity Patterns Among Pregnant Individuals With a History of Seeking Health Care for Migraine: A Population-Based Latent Class Analysis in Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Comorbidity is common with migraine. To inform services to support maternal well-being, we identified comorbidity patterns among pregnant individuals with a history of seeking health care for migraine before pregnancy. METHODS: In a population-based cohort of pregnancies in 2007-2022 in Ontario, Canada, to individuals with migraine-related health care encounters in the 5 years before conception, we used latent class analysis to identify subgroups using 33 comorbidities. Classes were chosen using statistical fit indices, parsimony, and clinical interpretability. We compared the soc

Paying for Medical and Social Complexity in Massachusetts Medicaid.

IMPORTANCE: The first MassHealth Social Determinants of Health payment model boosted payments for groups with unstable housing and those living in socioeconomically stressed neighborhoods. Improvements were designed to address previously mispriced subgroups and promote equitable payments to MassHealth accountable care organizations (ACOs). OBJECTIVE: To develop a model that ensures payments largely follow observed costs for members with complex health and/or social risks. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross sectional study used administrative data for members of the Massachusetts M

The Multiethnic Cohort: A Resource for the Study of Genetic and Nongenetic Cancer Risk across Populations.

BACKGROUND: The Multiethnic Cohort Study (MEC) is a US prospective cohort of more than 215,000 participants, designed to investigate variation in risk factors and disease across diverse racial and ethnic groups. More than 74,000 participants contributed biospecimens for genetic studies. We describe this subcohort and demonstrate the types of analyses it enables. METHODS: The MEC recruited adults aged 45 to 75 in California and Hawaii between 1993 and 1996. Cancer diagnoses were identified via state tumor registries. The MEC Genetics Database includes 73,139 participants with germline genotype

Socio-Ecological Factors Impacting Smoking and Recreational Drug Use During Pregnancy: Insights from the Albany Infant and Mother Study.

INTRODUCTION: Smoking and recreational drug use during pregnancy are significant public health challenges with multifactorial etiology. Most research focuses on the independent contributions of single risk factors. Grounded in the socio-ecological model and the problem behavior theory, this study aimed to identify the broad range of life course individual, interpersonal, and social-contextual factors influencing smoking and recreational drug use during pregnancy among a socioeconomically disadvantaged and racial/ethnic diverse study population. METHODS: Participants were 291 pregnant women fr

The Effect of the Area Deprivation Index on Surgical Outcomes for Benign Cystectomy.

INTRODUCTION: The impact of socioeconomic status (SES) on surgical outcomes is often underrecognized. Benign cystectomy (BC) for nononcologic bladder disease carries high morbidity but remains understudied. We evaluated the effect of SES on postoperative outcomes and healthcare utilization following BC. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all BCs performed at our institution from 2012 to 2025. Neighborhood-level socioeconomic disadvantage was measured using the area deprivation index (ADI; scale 1-10), with higher scores indicating greater deprivation. Patients were stratified into deciles (

Multi-scale feature integration with enhanced cytomorph for high-accuracy cervical cytology classification.

Accurate classification of cervical cytology images plays a crucial role in early detection and prevention of cervical cancer, which remains a significant global health challenge. Despite advancements in deep learning for medical image analysis, the unique characteristics of cervical cells, including subtle morphological differences and complex nuclear patterns, pose considerable challenges for automated classification systems. In this paper, we present a novel deep learning architecture specifically designed for cervical cytology image classification. Our approach integrates three key compone

Identifying dominant factors that impact hazardous alcohol use among sexual and gender minority groups.

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) people report higher rates of hazardous alcohol use relative to heterosexual and cisgender people. Although research has identified factors that contribute to these disparities, few studies include both general and SGM-specific correlates of alcohol outcomes or quantify which factors have the strongest effects. Methods. We used dominance analysis with data from SGM participants in a 2024 national survey (N = 1524) to evaluate the relative importance of multiple factors on past-year heavy drinking days (i.e., days on which participants drank 5 + standard drinks)

Designing out rabies: a conceptual urban planning framework for dog-mediated rabies control in informal settlements.

The persistence of human rabies transmitted by dogs in informal urban settings poses a significant challenge to global health. Although almost always fatal but completely preventable, the disease disproportionately affects marginalized populations. This suggests that the limitations in rabies elimination are not only biological but also reflect spatial, infrastructural, and governance determinants specific to informal settlements. To develop a conceptual framework integrating urban planning, the One Health approach, and rabies epidemiology to understand why existing biomedical strategies are l

Assessing the association between safety perceptions and communication about sex and drugs among Black adolescents exposed to adversity.

The present study examined the association between safety perceptions and communication with a trusted adult about sex and drugs among Black adolescents exposed to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and the role of gender as a potential moderator in this association. Data were drawn from a small, randomized control pilot test of an adapted evidence-based intervention conducted from 2022 to 2023 in Baltimore, Maryland. The sample included 57 Black adolescents who had been exposed to ACEs (Mage = 15.14 years, SD = 0.81l; 47.4% female, 52.6% male). Information about safety perceptions, health c

A Systematic Review of Public Housing, Poverty (De)Concentration, and Risk Behaviors: What About Youth?

Mobility housing programs aim to deconcentrate poverty in public housing areas. Previous synthesis research results describe the potential negative impact of mobility programs on the physical and mental health of youth. The current systematic review aims to expand our knowledge of the effects of living in a public housing development and leaving public housing and moving to a new neighborhood on youth risk behaviors, including both general crime/delinquency and substance use, sexual risk behavior, behavioral problems, and binge drinking. The systematic review process produced 7 primary researc

Examining social-ecological correlates of youth gang entry among serious juvenile offenders: A survival analysis.

Decades of research have categorized risk and protective factors for youth gang involvement in social contexts that include individual, family, peer, school, and community factors. However, most studies are cross-sectional and only examine 1 or 2 social-ecological contexts. This study, which used a time-to-event model with time-variant and time-invariant predictors, adds to this literature by using longitudinal social-ecological factors to examine increases in the hazard of gang entry among serious juvenile offenders followed for 7 years during the transition from adolescence to young adulthoo

Spatiotemporal characteristics of form analysis in the human visual cortex revealed by rapid event-related fMRI adaptation.

The integration of local elements to coherent forms is at the core of understanding visual perception. Accumulating evidence suggests that both early retinotopic and higher occipitotemporal areas contribute to the integration of local elements to global forms. However, the spatiotemporal characteristics of form analysis in the human visual cortex remain largely unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate form analysis at different spatial (global vs. local structure) and temporal (different stimulus presentation rates) scales across stages of visual analysis (from V1 to the lateral occip

Case control study of cervical cancer in Herrera Province, Republic of Panama.

A previous survey found the average annual age-adjusted incidence of cervical cancer in Herrera Province, Panama, to be 79/100,000, exceeding any other reported world rate. In an effort to clarify the reasons for this excessive occurrence, a case-control study was conducted among patients diagnosed between 1974-1980. Sixty-six percent of cervical cancer patients from Herrera Province were alive and were contacted by the study team; of these 91% were successfully interviewed and provided serum specimens. The total study encompassed 156/169 surviving patients and 309 age-neighborhood matched con

ISilDR: Isometric Seriation-Based Dimensionality Reduction for Visual Cluster Analysis.

Visual cluster analysis is a central task to explore multidimensional data. Dimensionality Reduction (DR) techniques support this task by spatializing multidimensional (MD) data similarities as point patterns in scatterplots. However, unavoidable false and missing neighbor distortions limit their accuracy. For instance, false neighbors make truly separated data clusters appear to overlap in the layout, while missing neighbors split true clusters into falsely separated groups. In general, both types of distortions exist in DR layouts except for orthogonal linear projections (OLP) that only gene
