Skin malignancies are commonly encountered as primary or incidental findings. Neoplasms that affect the skin include primary (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma, and Merkel cell carcinoma) and secondary (mesenchymal neoplasms, lymphoma, and metastases) tumors. Imaging provides valuable anatomic information (tumor size, depth of involvement, presence of distant metastasis, and data for guiding biopsy) and functional information (metabolic activity and sentinel node mapping data). This information, in addition to biopsy results, improves the histopathologic characterization

Oral cavity is not a common route for metastatic dissemination; metastasis to the oral region may affect soft tissues and jawbones, accounting for approximately 1% of all oral malignant neoplasms. The diagnosis of metastatic lesions to the oral cavity is usually challenging to clinicians and pathologists because of their complexity and rarity. We present a series of 12 metastatic neoplasms to the oral cavity that were detected previously or after the diagnosis of the primary tumor. All tumors were of epithelial origin with primary sites in the esophagus (2 cases), colon (2 cases), bladder, lun

We present our experience with ten cases of lipofibromatosis-like tumour (LPF-NT) to further characterise this newly described neoplasm. There were six males and four females with a mean age of 12.8 years (range 2-37 years). Tumours occurred in the neck (n = 3), buttock (n = 2), chest wall, flank, hip, hand and foot (n = 1). Histologically, they were composed of cellular fascicles of mildly to moderately atypical spindle cells displaying an infiltrative pattern reminiscent of lipofibromatosis or dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans. Immunohistochemically, all cases co-expressed S100 protein and CD3

BACKGROUND: After the liver, the lungs represent the most frequent site of metastasis from primary tumours. Surgical treatment of lung secondary neoplasms leads to a significant improvement in survival.
METHODS: Between 1960-1997, 178 patients with lung metastases underwent surgery at the Thoracic Surgery Department of Turin University in a total of 193 operations. A retrospective study was made in order to identify the prognostic factors which influenced final survival in this population.
RESULTS: Overall survival was 47% after 2 years and 20% after five years. Prognosis was not influenced

AIMS: Tumours harbouring FET::CREB fusions, particularly those involving EWSR1/FUS and CREM, represent an emerging group that is distinct from and unclassifiable into established categories such as angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma, clear cell sarcoma of soft tissue, or malignant gastrointestinal neuroectodermal tumour. This study aims to further delineate the clinicopathological, immunohistochemical, and molecular features of these rare mesenchymal neoplasms with EWSR1/FUS::CREM fusions, focusing on diagnostic challenges and aggressive potential.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We analysed seven cases o

Paratesticular mesothelioma (malignant mesothelioma arising from the tunica vaginalis of the testis) represents a small proportion of mesothelial neoplasms, and cutaneous involvement by paratesticular mesothelioma is very rare. Cutaneous involvement can manifest as scrotal subcutaneous nodules from regional spread, distant metastasis, or direct extension through surgical scars. Mesothelioma has 3 histopathologic classifications that include epithelioid, biphasic, and sarcomatoid, which is rarely seen in paratesticular mesothelioma. Given the rarity of this condition, cutaneous mesothelioma may

The periampullary neuroendocrine tumour is an infrequently occurring tumour. Its prevalence among gastrointestinal neuroendocrine neoplasms is less than 0.3%, and less than 2% out of periampullary tumours. These neoplasms have relatively poor prognosis. Jaundice and pain in the abdomen are the early and most commonly occurring symptoms with weight loss being a late event. The carcinoid syndrome presents infrequently in periampullary neuroendocrine tumour and happens only if hepatic metastasis occurs. In this scenario, histopathology plays a paramount role in the diagnosis. Specific immunohisto

Thyroid-like low-grade nasopharyngeal papillary adenocarcinoma (TL-LGNPPA) is a rare primary adenocarcinoma of nasopharynx. The immunohistochemical pattern of this tumor is similar to that of papillary thyroid carcinoma making this neoplasm a challenging diagnosis. A case of TL-LGNPPA with biphasic morphology is presented. The removed tumor from the nasopharynx exhibited a polypoid appearance. Microscopically, it was composed of papillary structures admixed with a few solid areas of spindle cells. The papillae were lined by columnar epithelium. Both the epithelium and the spindle cells were st

Neuroendocrine tumors represent a heterogeneous group of neoplasms that arise from neuroendocrine cells and secrete various peptides and bioamines. While gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors, commonly called carcinoids, account for about 2/3 of all neuroendocrine tumors, they are relatively rare. Small intestine neuroendocrine tumors originate from intestinal enterochromaffin cells and represent about 1/4 of small intestine neoplasms. They can be asymptomatic or cause nonspecific symptoms, which usually leads to a delayed diagnosis. Imaging modalities can aid diagnosis and surgery remains th

Divergent differentiation occurs in a subset of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST), but differentiation toward epithelial elements is unusual. MPNST with both heterologous rhabdomyosarcomatous differentiation (malignant Triton tumor), and glandular epithelial differentiation is exceedingly rare, with only 11 cases reported since 1973, and only 1 with histologically proven metastasis. We describe a case occurring in the mediastinum (between the ascending aorta and the main pulmonary artery) of a 40-year-old man with neurofibromatosis type-1. Despite treatment, the tumor metastasiz

A 71-year-old female patient underwent urgent laparotomy due to severe right lower quadrant abdominal pain and fever. Macroscopically duplex coecal and transverse colon cancer as well as a sigmoid or left ovarian cancer were suspected. Pathological findings revealed synchronous left ovarian and transverse colonic neoplasms. Both primaries metastatized to their regional lymph nodes. Furthermore, the ovarian cancer infiltrating the sigmoid colon gave distant metastasis in the coecum, too. Ovarian cancer histology showed papillary adenocarcinoma, and transverse colon cancer was a tubular adenocar

BACKGROUND: Proliferating trichilemmal tumor is an uncommon tumor of the follicular isthmus of the hair follicle. It usually presents as a solitary nodule on the scalp of older white women. Although these lesions typically behave in a benign fashion, recurrences and metastasis after local excision have been reported. Mohs' micrographic surgery has been effectively used to treat adnexal neoplasms.
OBJECTIVE: To report a case of a proliferating trichilemmal tumor in a young black man, which was excised using Mohs' micrographic surgery.
METHODS: Case report and review of the literature.

Seven examples of a distinctive morphological variant of well-differentiated adenocarcinoma of the gallbladder with intestinal features are reported. Four tumors were composed predominantly of goblet cells and absorptive columnar cells, two of which had, in addition, a few Paneth cells and neuroendocrine cells. Three neoplasms closely resembled colonic carcinoma, and one of these also contained neuroendocrine cells. Serotonin-immunoreactive cells were demonstrated in three of the seven intestinal-type adenocarcinomas, two of which also had cells that stained for somatostatin pancreatic polypep

Infection of susceptible chickens with avian leukosis virus (ALV) results in the development of bursal lymphomas. These neoplasms develop within the bursa of Fabricius following a latent period of several months. The response exhibited by two previously uncharacterized chicken lines to ALV infection has been examined. The two lines, Hyline SC and FP, responded differently to ALV infection. During a 24-week period following intravenous ALV infection, 27 of 50 SC chickens developed bursal lymphomas. No lymphomas developed in the 36 FP chickens tested. A majority of the SC chickens that developed

Squamous lip carcinoma. A review of 98 cases. Ninety-eight new cases of squamous lip carcinoma (87 males and 11 females), diagnosed over a 10 year period at the Institute of Pathological Anatomy of the University of Trieste were studied from an epidemiological point of view and in relation to their biological behaviour. The overall incidence was equal to 6.67%... in males and 0.73%... in females, with a male to female ratio of 9.2:1. The distribution of the cases can be directly correlated to age: the incidence in the 80-84 age group among males was 3 times greater than that in the 60-64 age g

The aim of this systematic review is to analyze epidemiology, clinical presentation, histopathological features, treatment and oncological outcomes in laryngeal mucoepidermoid cancer (MEC) in order to improve the knowledge on the management of such a rare malignant neoplasm. Specifically, authors highlight patients' and tumors' features about local, regional, and distant recurrence of disease. PRISMA 2020 guidelines were applied in this systematic literature review. A computerized search was performed using the Embase/Pubmed, Scopus, and Cochrane databases, for articles published from 1971 to

Needle core biopsies (NCB) are widely used in adults but are less often used for the evaluation of pediatric tumors. To determine the diagnostic utility of NCB for pediatric tumors, we performed a retrospective analysis. Fifty NCB of masses from 1992 to 1998, subsequent pathologic specimens, and medical records were reviewed. All patients were less than 21 years of age. Of the NCB 78% (39/50) were diagnostic of a neoplasm, 8% (4/50) were nondiagnostic in cases where a tumor was subsequently diagnosed, and 14% (7/50) revealed inflammatory or reactive lesions, with no subsequent diagnosis of a n

Pancreaticobiliary cancers are uncommon neoplasms, frequently diagnosed at an advanced stage with metastasis to the liver, lung, or peritoneum. Here, we report an extraordinary case of a patient presenting with both hepatic and extrahepatic lesions, including bone involvement, but without discernible disease in the biliary system or pancreas. Eventual pathological evidence supports the origin of primary pancreaticobiliary carcinoma. This case report aims to stimulate discourse regarding the consideration of pancreaticobiliary cancers as a potential cause of extrahepatic metastatic lesions. Inc

Gastroblastoma is an extremely rare biphasic tumor that typically occurs in the stomach in patients between the ages of 10 and 30. Only 16 cases have been reported previously. These tumors are important to diagnose and distinguish from more aggressive neoplasms; although numbers are small, prognosis appears excellent overall with complete excision, with only occasional metastasis and/or local recurrence. We report a case of gastroblastoma in a 26-year-old male arising from the pylorus and extending through the first and second portions of the duodenum. This is the first case to be reported fro
