An autoradiographic study of the projections from the lateral geniculate body of the rat.

The projections from the lateral geniculate body of the rat were followed using the technique of autoradiography after injections of [3H] proline into the dorsal and/or ventral nuclei of this diencephalic structure. Autoradiographs were prepared from either frozen or paraffin coronal sections through the rat brain. The dorsal nucleus of the lateral geniculate projected via the optic radiation to area 17 of the cerebral cortex. There was also a slight extension of label into the zones of transition between areas 17, 18 and 18a. The distribution of silver grains in the various layers of the cere

Good vibes keep worries at bay: a prefrontal-hypothalamic pathway engages positive affect to mitigate fear.

Trauma-related neuropsychiatric disorders are commonly treated with exposure-based therapy, an approach based on fear extinction, in which fear memory and expression are suppressed by repeated exposure to the inciting fear stimulus. Fear extinction-focused research often investigates mechanisms of fear inhibition, but positive affect may also contribute to facilitating extinction. In this issue of the JCI, Lin et al. used activity-dependent neuronal labeling in a model of fear extinction to tag extinction-activated medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) ensembles, identifying functionally distinct pr

Local and interregional thalamocortical dynamics show temporally dissociable changes during propofol induced loss of consciousness.

Whether propofol-induced loss of consciousness (LOC) reflects a single thalamocortical transition or involves temporally dissociable local and interregional dynamics remains unclear. Using stereo-electroencephalography recordings from the anterior nucleus of the thalamus, prefrontal cortex, and temporal cortex during anesthesia induction, we quantified permutation entropy, spectral power, directional connectivity, and phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) to determine the relative onset timing of significant changes across metrics, regions, and frequency bands. Here, we show that complexity in the an

The secret connections of the brain: a connectomic reserve for neuroplasticity?

Here, we propose a new concept linked to neuroplasticity and cognitive reserve: 'Connectomic reserve'. It is suggested and discussed as a hypothesis, aiming to stimulate experimental testing, taking as an example the exuberant circuits formed during development by commissural neurons and their projections. Upon reviewing the developmental strategies of the formation of callosal circuits, from axonal emission by cortical cell bodies to the choice of trajectories within the ipsi and contralateral hemispheres, we identified the formation of many ectopic and heterotopic projections. Ectopic projec

Advancing Cerebro-cerebellar Network Imaging with Ultra-high Field (7T) MRI: Progress and Future Challenges.

Ultra-high field (UHF) MRI (≥ 7T) is increasingly used to study the cerebro-cerebellar networks, offering substantial gains in signal-to-noise ratio and blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) sensitivity that enable submillimeter functional and structural imaging. These advantages are particularly relevant for the cerebellum, whose tightly folded cortex and small deep nuclei have historically been difficult to resolve in vivo. In this targeted review, we synthesize recent progress in UHF-MRI applied to cerebro-cerebellar network mapping and critically examine the methodological challenges that ac

Cortical and brainstem mechanisms of pain: linking defensive responses, descending modulation, and affective-sensory integration.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pain is a multidimensional experience emerging from the coordinated activity of distributed neural circuits that integrate sensory, emotional, and cognitive information. The purpose of this review is to highlight and synthesise current understanding of the circuit mechanisms underlying ascending nociception and descending modulation of pain, with particular emphasis on brainstem areas and their involvement in shaping pain perception. We discuss how dysregulation of these control systems may contribute to persistent pain states. RECENT FINDINGS: It is consistently demonstrat

Topography and functional connectivity analysis of heart surgery-associated brain lesions: a literature review.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac surgery is a major therapeutic advancement but remains associated with neurological complications, including ischemic stroke and postoperative cognitive decline. Compared with stroke of other etiologies, ischemic brain injury following cardiac surgery may involve distinct vascular territories and functional networks, potentially influencing its characteristic cognitive profile. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of case reports describing ischemic brain lesions occurring after cardiac surgery in adults with available neuroimaging data. Lesions were manually traced o

Advancements in the study of large-scale network alterations in brain functional connectivity among individuals with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is characterized by structural and functional impairments of varying severity. However, inconsistent findings from previous studies have led to an incomplete understanding of the precise associations both within and between functional networks in BD. Analysis from a large-scale network perspective may offer more comprehensive insights. METHOD: Studies that used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to explore the changes in functional connectivity (FC) within and between major brain networks in patients with BD were included by searching for keywords s

Dorsal-Caudal and Ventral Hippocampi Target Different Cell Populations in the Medial Frontal Cortex in Rodents.

Direct projections from the ventral hippocampus (vHPC) to the medial frontal cortex (MFC) play crucial roles in memory and emotional regulation. Using anterograde transsynaptic tracing and ex vivo electrophysiology in male mice, we document a previously unexplored pathway that parallels the established vHPC-MFC connectivity. This pathway connects the dorsal-caudal hippocampus (dcHPC) to specific subregions of the ventral MFC (vMFC), in particular the dorsal peduncular cortex. Notably, this pathway exerts a strong inhibitory influence on vMFC by targeting a substantial proportion of inhibitory

Medial prefrontal cortex circuit dynamics involved in stage-specific addiction.

The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) serves as a critical hub in addiction pathology across binge/intoxication, withdrawal/negative affect, and preoccupation/anticipation/craving stages. This review provides the roles of the mPFC in different stages of addiction, and a focus on the mPFC neurotransmitter systems, neural circuits, molecules and synaptic adaptations on the regulation of addictive behaviors. Neurotransmitter systems of dopaminergic, glutamatergic, and GABAergic imbalances are related to pathological addiction. Circuits of dynamic dysregulation in the mPFC interaction with the stria

Circuit Modules for Flexible Locomotion.

Locomotion, like all behaviors, possesses an inherent flexibility that allows for the scaling of movement kinematic features, such as speed and vigor, in response to an ever-changing external world and internal drives. This flexibility is embedded in the organization of the spinal locomotor circuits, which encode and decode commands from the brainstem and proprioceptive feedback. This review highlights our current understanding of the modular organization of these locomotor circuits and how this modularity endows them with intrinsic mechanisms to adjust speed and vigor, thereby contributing to

Hippocampal Subregion Function and Its Clinical Correlations in Childhood Autism Spectrum Disorders.

The hippocampus plays a crucial role in memory and social processing, both of which are impaired in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Investigating the functional activity of hippocampal subregions can provide valuable insights into their involvement in ASD-related social and behavioral symptoms. This study analyzed hippocampal resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in 507 male child participants from the ABIDE dataset (225 ASD, 282 typical controls) and its relation to clinical features. The hippocampus was subdivided into rostral and caudal subregions, and rsFC patterns were compared bet

Improving the Visualization of Superior Longitudinal Fascicule-2 and Superior Longitudinal Fascicule -3 Using Photoshop Filters.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Several studies are currently exploring the anatomical origins of superior longitudinal fascicule (SLF) 2 and SLF-3, which are components of the frontoparietal network. This study aimed to achieve optimum visualization of the anatomical corridors of these fibers using Photoshop filters. METHODS: Four postmortem brain hemispheres were dissected in accordance with the method proposed by Klingler and Ludwig. Dissections were performed under a surgical microscope (Carl Zeiss AG, Oberkochen, Germany) at 4× and 40× magnification. All dissections were documented at each st

Effects of aripiprazole on resting-state functional connectivity of large-scale brain networks in first-episode drug-naïve schizophrenia patients.

Aripiprazole modulates functional connectivity (FC) between several brain regions in first-episode schizophrenia patients, contributing to improvement in clinical symptoms. However, the effects of aripiprazole on abnormal connections among extensive brain networks in schizophrenia patients remain unclear. We aimed to investigate the effects of 12 weeks of aripiprazole treatment on the FC of large-scale brain networks. Forty-five first-episode drug-naïve schizophrenia patients and 45 healthy controls were recruited for this longitudinal study. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging

Brain areas interconnected to ventral pathway circuits are independently able to induce enhancement in object recognition memory and cause reversal in object recognition memory deficit.

AIMS: Ventral pathway circuits are constituted by the interconnected brain areas that are distributed throughout the brain. These brain circuits are primarily involved in processing of object related information in brain. However, their role in object recognition memory (ORM) enhancement remains unknown. Here, we have studied on the implication of these circuits in ORM enhancement and in reversal of ORM deficit in aging. METHODS: The brain areas interconnected to ventral pathway circuits in rat brain were activated by an expression of a protein called regulator of G-protein signaling 14 of 41

Altered resting-state functional connectivity of the brain in children with autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a group of neurodevelopmental disorders. Brain mapping has shown that functional brain connections are altered in autism. This study investigated the pattern of brain connection changes in autistic people compared to healthy people. This study aimed to analyze functional abnormalities within the brain due to ASD, using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Resting-state functional magnetic resonance images of 26 individuals with ASD and 26 healthy controls were obtained from the Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange (ABIDE) database. The DPA

Clinical anatomy of the precuneus and pathogenesis of the schizophrenia.

Recent evidence has shown that the precuneus plays a role in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. The precuneus is a structure of the parietal lobe's medial and posterior cortex, representing a central hub involved in multimodal integration processes. Although neglected for several years, the precuneus is highly complex and crucial for multimodal integration. It has extensive connections with different cerebral areas and is an interface between external stimuli and internal representations. In human evolution, the precuneus has increased in size and complexity, allowing the development of higher

Abnormal resting-state effective connectivity in large-scale networks among obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic mental illness characterized by abnormal functional connectivity among distributed brain regions. Previous studies have primarily focused on undirected functional connectivity and rarely reported from network perspective. METHODS: To better understand between or within-network connectivities of OCD, effective connectivity (EC) of a large-scale network is assessed by spectral dynamic causal modeling with eight key regions of interests from default mode (DMN), salience (SN), frontoparietal (FPN) and cerebellum networks, based on large

Balance-energy of resting state network in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Stability of the brain functional network is directly linked to organization of synchronous and anti-synchronous activities. Nevertheless, impact of arrangement of positive and negative links called links topology requires to be well understood. In this study, we investigated how topology of the functional links reduce balance-energy of the brain network in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and push the network to a more stable state as compared to healthy controls. Therefore, functional associations between the regions were measured using the phase synchrony between the EEG activities. Subs
