A progressive neurological condition characterised by megalencephaly, spasticity, ataxia and seizures in two siblings of consanguineous parents is described. The electroencephalogram showed posterior discharges and an unusual photoparoxysmal response whereas brainstem auditory evoked potential findings were consistent with a white matter disorder. Computerized tomography scans revealed diffuse hypodensity of the white matter and a brain biopsy on one sibling showed features of dysmyelination without evidence of demyelination, Rosenthal fibres or the spongy changes characteristic of Canavan's d

In 135 cases of posterior fossa surgery almost exclusively in the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) intraoperative monitoring of brain-stem acoustic evoked potentials (BAEP) and partly somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) was performed. The series consisted of 20 microvascular decompressions, 63 acoustic neurinomas, 7 vascular lesions and 45 other space occupying lesions, mostly in the CPA. BAEP monitoring alone was employed in 76 cases, combined BAEP and SEP monitoring less frequently. The technique of anaesthesia and intraoperative monitoring is presented in detail including an analysis of techn

This paper reviews the literature on the EEG effects of hyperventilation, with particular emphasis on the literature concerning the mechanism of EEG slowing with hyperventilation. We suggest that there is no definite evidence to support the theory that the EEG slowing and "activation" are caused by hypoxia secondary to cerebral vasoconstriction induced by hypocapnia during voluntary hyperventilation. Since it is known that hypocapnia produces decreased activity in the mesencephalic reticular formation and that lesions of the thalamus abolish the hyperventilation response, we propose a strong,

To study the neurophysiological mechanisms of neurasthenia, hysterical neurosis and obsession neurosis with a view to the practical employment of the results, the authors examined 100 patients and 40 normal subjects using the method of evoked potentials (EP). EP changes indicated an neurasthenia-related decrease in the functional activity of the cortex, weakening of its inhibitive functions and an increase in the reactivity of the system of negative-emotional support. Patients with hysterical neurosis displayed the greatest excitability of the structures of the projective pathways and insuffic

OBJECTIVE: Acupuncture may modulate brain activity through effects on the central nervous system. This study aimed to investigate short-term changes in spontaneous EEG activity and functional connectivity during acupuncture in patients with stroke using multichannel electroencephalography (EEG).
METHODS: Multichannel EEG recordings were collected at three stages: before acupuncture, during acupuncture, and after acupuncture. Acupuncture was applied at Jianyu, Quchi, and Waiguan. EEG activity was evaluated using power spectral density (PSD) analysis. Functional connectivity was assessed using

INTRODUCTION: Objective fear recognition is crucial for clinical evaluation and understanding emotional processing. This study uses a multi-modal biophysical approach (EEG, HRV, EDA) within an interactive, semi-immersive environment to investigate coordinated brain-body responses across multidimensional fear scenarios.
METHODS: Ten participants experienced four fear-related scenes mapped to Kantian cognitive dimensions (Embodied, Conceptual, Discursive, Integrative) featuring real-time adaptive audiovisuals. EEG, HRV, and EDA metrics were concurrently recorded and normalized to a resting base

Acute physical fatigue can impair cognitive control, yet its underlying neurochemical mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated whether catecholaminergic modulation influences behavioral and neural markers of inhibitory control following physical fatigue. Eighteen healthy, recreationally active adults (9 males, 9 females; 23.4 ± 2.2 years) completed a randomized, triple-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study. On separate visits, participants received methylphenidate (MPH; 20 mg; a dopamine and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor), reboxetine (REB; 8 mg; a noradrenaline reuptake inhibi

Background/Objectives: Upper-limb motor dysfunction is common after stroke, and patients often have limited recovery during rehabilitation. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between contralesional neurophysiological parameters and the effects of rehabilitation on upper-limb motor function in stroke patients with corticospinal tract damage. Methods: Forty patients with subacute stroke with an absent MEP response on the ipsilesional side before admission were included. Contralesional neurophysiological parameters, including resting motor threshold, contralesional MEP, contr

Parkinson's disease (PD) is defined by the presence of motor symptoms, such as bradykinesia. However, it also involves less well-understood cognitive deficits, including impairments in time processing: the ability to perceive, estimate, and produce time intervals accurately. In this review, we summarize the existing literature on time processing in PD, with an emphasis on the different tasks used to study it, as well as on the cognitive processes and neurophysiological mechanisms contributing to time processing deficits in PD. FINDINGS: show that temporal processing deficits in PD span both mo

Electromyography (EMG) is used to assess the functional status of peripheral motor axons during surgical procedures and can help protect patients' neurological integrity intraoperatively. This is a position statement on intraoperative EMG monitoring from the American Society of Neurophysiological Monitoring (ASNM) and updates prior ASNM position statement on EMG from 2005. This position statement is endorsed by ASNM and serves as an educational service to the neurophysiological community on the recommended use of EMG as a neurophysiological monitoring tool. It presents the rationale for EMG ut

AIM: Preterm infants often encounter difficulty with attaining independent oral feeding. There is limited evidence on which factors influence the achievement of independent oral feeding. This study aimed to examine the relation between intrinsic neurophysiological factors and the attainment of independent oral feeding.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted using data from a level II-III neonatal intensive care unit. The Oral Feeding in Preterm Infants Conceptual Model was used to identify intrinsic factors, including gestational age, sex, twin, respiratory support duration, intraventri

OBJECTIVE: Neck extension can transiently impair spinal cord conduction in cervical myelopathy, yet posture-dependent intraoperative neurophysiological changes remain poorly characterised. We aimed to define the timing, modality involvement, reversibility, and risk factors of positioning-related intraoperative neurophysiological events during anterior cervical surgery.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of patients undergoing anterior cervical surgery for myelopathy with multimodal intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring. Posture-dependent events were defined as neurophysiolo

BACKGROUND: Pain is a common and disabling symptom in multiple sclerosis (MS), yet its pathophysiological mechanisms remain poorly understood. Clinical assessment of neuropathic pain relies largely on subjective screening tools such as the DN4 questionnaire. This study aimed to characterize pain phenotype in MS using the DN4 score and to determine its relationship with objective neurophysiological markers of nociceptive and non-nociceptive pathway function assessed by laser-evoked (LEPs) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs).
METHODS: Fifty MS patients reporting pain underwent standardiz

OBJECTIVE: Fatigue is among the most disabling symptoms across neurological and postinfectious conditions and is a defining feature of long COVID, yet objective neurophysiological markers remain scarce. Auditory sensory gating, indexed by P50 suppression, has been proposed as a correlate of cognitive fatigue in multiple sclerosis, but its relevance in long COVID is unclear. Additionally, we compared the utility of the Beck Depression Inventory-II and Beck Depression Inventory-Fast Screen (BDI-FS) in this fatigued population.
METHOD: Seventy-one individuals with long COVID-related fatigue comp

People with Parkinson's Disease (PD) often compensate for impaired automatic balance control by engaging additional attentional resources for motor tasks. With disease progression, their cognitive system too becomes increasingly affected, further impairing postural stability. The interaction between cognitive and motor systems in the early disease stages, however, remains poorly investigated. The present study aimed to elucidate behavioral and neurophysiological changes in early-stage PD to identify with greater accuracy the specific disease-related discrepancies from healthy functioning on bo

Alterations in the temporal characteristics of EEG microstates in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) have been repeatedly found in previous studies. Nevertheless, altered temporal characteristics of EEG microstates in auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) SCZ are still unknown. This study aimed to investigate whether SCZ patients with sAVHs exhibit abnormal EEG microstates. We analyzed high-density electroencephalography data that from 79 SCZ patients, including 38 severe AVHs patients (sAVH group), 17 moderate auditory verbal hallucinations patients (mid-AVH group), and 24 without auditory ver

Past studies indicate that individuals at clinical high-risk for psychosis (CHR) display emotion regulation abnormalities that predict increased symptom severity and poor functional outcome. However, it is unclear which neurophysiological processes contribute to impairments in implementing various strategies to down-regulate negative emotion. The current study used electroencephalography (EEG) to determine whether individuals at CHR have difficulty implementing reappraisal and distraction. Participants included individuals at CHR (n = 25) and healthy controls (CN: n = 36) who completed an EEG
