A sustainable colloidal material with sorption and nutrient-supply capabilities for in situ groundwater bioremediation.

Microbial degradation of subsurface organic contaminants is often hindered by the low availability of both contaminants and nutrients, especially phosphorus (P). The use of activated carbon and traditional P fertilizers to overcome these challenges has proved ineffective; therefore, we sought to find an innovative and effective solution. By heating bone meal-derived organic residues in water in a closed reactor, we synthesized nonporous colloids composed of aromatic and aliphatic structures linked to P groups. X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy analysis revealed that the materials contain…

Characteristics of Distinct Dietary Patterns in Rural Bangladesh: Nutrient Adequacy and Vulnerability to Shocks.

Food security in Bangladesh has improved in recent years, but the country is now facing a double burden of malnutrition while also being highly vulnerable to climate change. Little is known about how this may affect food supply to different sectors of the population. To inform this, we used a national dietary survey of 800 rural households to define dietary patterns using latent class analysis. Nutrient adequacy of dietary patterns and their potential vulnerability to climate shocks (based on diversity of calorie sources) were assessed. We fitted mixed effects logistic regression models to ide

Nutrient Deficiency Promotes the Entry of Helicobacter pylori Cells into Candida Yeast Cells.

Helicobacter pylori, a Gram-negative bacterium, has as a natural niche the human gastric epithelium. This pathogen has been reported to ente … varied according to nutrient concentrations and also were strain-dependent. In conclusion, reduced nutrients stresses H. pylori, promoting its entry into Candida cells. The starvation of both H. pylori and Candida strains reduced the percentages of Y-BLBs, suggesting that starving yeast cells may be less capable of harboring stressed H. pylori cells. Moreo …

Impact of joint hypermobility syndrome on gastric accommodation and nutrient tolerance in functional dyspepsia.

UNLABELLED: Functional dyspepsia (FD) is defined as the presence of gastroduodenal symptoms in the absence of organic disease that is likely to explain the symptoms. Joint hypermobility (JH) refers to the increased passive or active movement of a joint beyond its normal range and is characteristically present in patients with joint hypermobility syndrome (JHS), which is a hypermobile subtype of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS). Recent reports have highlighted the co-existence of FD with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Our aim was to study the prevalence of JHS in FD compared with healthy subjects and to s

INCREASING THE EFFICIENCY OF BACTERIOLOGICAL DIAGNOSIS OF UREGENITAL TRICHOMONIASIS USING THE IMPROVED NUTRIENT MEDIUM.

The scientific and practical significance of the problem of urogenital trichomoniasis is determined by the prevalence and variability of the pathogen. It is assumed that under adverse conditions, these protozoa lose the ability to move intensively and undergo morphological transformation. The existence of such a problem generates the scientific and practical interest in the matter of improvement of bacteriological methods of diagnosis when examining patients with chronic inflammatory processes of the urogenital tract. The purpose of the study - optimization of the composition of the nutrient m

Effects of glucocorticoids on the gene expression of nutrient transporters in different rabbit intestinal segments.

Glucocorticoids (GCs) are counterregulatory hormones with broad effects on the digestion and absorption of dietary carbohydrates, lipids and proteins, but the underlying molecular mechanisms of these effects remain unclear. The present experiment was conducted to investigate the main expression sites of nutrient transporters and the effects of GCs on the gene expression of these transporters in the rabbit small intestine. The results showed that peptide transporter 1 (PepT1), facultative amino acid transporter (rBAT), neutral amino acid transporter (B0AT), excitatory amino acid transporter 3 (

Narrative Review: Nutrient Deficiencies in Adults and Children with Treated and Untreated Celiac Disease.

Nutrient deficiencies are well recognized as secondary consequences of celiac disease (CD) and closely related to the clinical presentation of affected patients. Despite their clinical significance, consensus is lacking on the pattern and frequency of nutrient deficiencies in CD, the usefulness of their assessment at the time of diagnosis and during follow-up. This review aims to provide an overview of nutrient deficiencies among pediatric and adult CD patients at diagnosis and on a gluten-free diet (GFD), and their potential causes in CD. Secondly, we review their impact on CD management stra

ZnCl2 treatment improves nutrient quality and Zn accumulation in peanut seeds and sprouts.

Peanut is a popular food due to its high nutrient content. The effects of ZnCl2 on peanut seed germination, fatty acid and sugar contents, vitamin biosynthesis, antioxidant content, and Zn assimilation were evaluated in this study. Treatment with ZnCl2 significantly improved the germination rate, enhanced reactive oxygen species production and reduced the content of total fatty acids in peanut seed and sprout. However, ZnCl2 treatment did not reduce total sugar or total protein relative to the control. Germination promoted the biosynthesis of phenolics and resveratrol and increased the antioxi

Promoting apical-to-basolateral unidirectional transport of nanoformulations by manipulating the nutrient-absorption pathway.

The epithelium is a formidable barrier to the absorption of orally delivered nano-vehicles. Here, by exploring a nutrient-absorption pathway, a self-amplified nanoplatform was developed to promote apical-to-basolateral transcytosis across the epithelium. The nanoplatform consisted of fructose-modified polyethylene glycol coated nanoparticles (Fru-PEG NPs) and a sweetener, acesulfame potassium (AceK) in combination. Compared with regular PEGylated nanoparticles, the combination exhibited a 3.9-fold increase of absorption following oral gavage in mice and an 8.8-fold increase of transepithelial

Modeling quaternary ammonium compound inhibition of biological nutrient removal activated sludge.

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are surface-active organic compounds common in industrial cleaner formulations widely used in various sanitation applications. While acting as effective pathogenic biocides, QACs lack selective toxicity and often have poor target specificity. As a result, adverse effects on biological processes and thus the performance of biological nutrient removal (BNR) systems may be encountered when QACs enter wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Because of these impacts, there is motivation to screen wastewater influents for QACs and for process engineers to consider t

Response of cyanobacteria and phytoplankton abundance to warming, extreme rainfall events and nutrient enrichment.

Cyanobacterial blooms are an increasing threat to water quality and global water security caused by the nutrient enrichment of freshwaters. There is also a broad consensus that blooms are increasing with global warming, but the impacts of other concomitant environmental changes, such as an increase in extreme rainfall events, may affect this response. One of the potential effects of high rainfall events on phytoplankton communities is greater loss of biomass through hydraulic flushing. Here we used a shallow lake mesocosm experiment to test the combined effects of: warming (ambient vs. +4°C in

The TMEM127 human tumor suppressor is a component of the mTORC1 lysosomal nutrient-sensing complex.

The TMEM127 tumor suppressor gene encodes a transmembrane protein of unknown function mutated in pheochromocytomas and, rarely, in renal cancers. Tumors with inactivating TMEM127 mutations have increased mTORC1 signaling by undefined mechanisms. Here we report that TMEM127 interacts with the lysosome-anchored complex comprised of Rag GTPases, the LAMTOR pentamer (or 'ragulator') and vATPase, which controls amino acid-mediated mTORC1 activation. We found that under nutrient-rich conditions TMEM127 expression reduces mTORC1 recruitment to Rags. In addition, TMEM127 interacts with LAMTOR in an am

Enhancement of nutrient removal performance of activated sludge with a novel hybrid biofilm process.

The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of a hybrid biofilm pilot-scale treatment plant, designed with a novel configuration by the integration of a fixed-film system, to improve nitrogen removal. The pilot-scale system was established at a wastewater treatment plant in Istanbul and operated based on stream separation following a process consisting of Bio-P and primary sedimentation units in which carbonaceous compounds were entrapped/incorporated in settled biomass. The ammonia-rich supernatant was directed to a moving bed biofilm (MBBR) nitrification tank to obtain an efficient

Identification of placental nutrient transporters associated with intrauterine growth restriction and pre-eclampsia.

BACKGROUND: Gestational disorders such as intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and pre-eclampsia (PE) are main causes of poor perinatal outcomes worldwide. Both diseases are related with impaired materno-fetal nutrient transfer, but the crucial transport mechanisms underlying IUGR and PE are not fully elucidated. In this study, we aimed to identify membrane transporters highly associated with transplacental nutrient deficiencies in IUGR/PE. RESULTS: In silico analyses on the identification of differentially expressed nutrient transporters were conducted using seven eligible microarray datas

A database of georeferenced nutrient chemistry data for mountain lakes of the Western United States.

Human activities have increased atmospheric nitrogen and phosphorus deposition rates relative to pre-industrial background. In the Western U.S., anthropogenic nutrient deposition has increased nutrient concentrations and stimulated algal growth in at least some remote mountain lakes. The Georeferenced Lake Nutrient Chemistry (GLNC) Database was constructed to create a spatially-extensive lake chemistry database needed to assess atmospheric nutrient deposition effects on Western U.S. mountain lakes. The database includes nitrogen and phosphorus water chemistry data spanning 1964-2015, with 148,

Seasonality of nutrient intake - An analysis including over 44,000 participants in 4 countries.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Dietary intake is believed to follow a seasonal pattern, so adjusting for seasonality in nutritional epidemiology is usually requested. The aim of this study was to assess the seasonality of energy and macronutrients intake (expressed as % of total caloric intake) using a large set of population-based studies. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from 9 population-based studies from 4 countries (3 in the Northern Hemisphere and 1 in Southern Hemisphere), with a total sample size of 44,611 subjects. Data were derived from FFQ or repeated 24 h-recalls. Dietary markers included tot…
