[The use of pylorus-sparing operations in treating duodenal peptic ulcer complicated by stenosis].

Based on an analysis of immediate (388 patients) and long-term (259 patients) results of surgical treatment of ulcer disease of the duodenum complicated by stenosis the authors made a conclusion that selective proximal vagotomy in combination with dissection of the ulcer substrate (the stenosis area) without injuries of the pyloric constrictor is the operation of choice in treatment of ulcerous duodenal stenosis resulting in less lethality (0.52%), in practical exclusion of the development of functional disorders and impaired nutrition of the patients.

Three cases of comprehensive dietary therapy and pharmacotherapy of patients with complex obesity-related diseases.

The effect of weight loss with anorectic medications on sleep apnea, non-insulin-dependent diabetes, and steatohepatitis is illustrated in three cases from practice in a clinical nutrition setting. Prevention of obesity, a chronic disorder, is preferable, but when obesity becomes a major obstacle in the care of patients with respiratory, cardiovascular, and metabolic disorders and osteoarthritis, an intense course of weight reduction using anorectic medications under medical and dietetic guidance is essential for patients' survival and reduction of medical cost.

Research progress in delineating the pathological mechanisms of GJB2-related hearing loss.

Hearing loss is the most common congenital sensory impairment. Mutations or deficiencies of the GJB2 gene are the most common genetic cause of congenital non-syndromic deafness. Pathological changes such as decreased potential in the cochlea, active cochlear amplification disorders, cochlear developmental disorders and macrophage activation have been observed in various GJB2 transgenic mouse models. In the past, researchers generally believed that the pathological mechanisms underlying GJB2-related hearing loss comprised a K+ circulation defect and abnormal ATP-Ca2+ signals. However, recent st

Behind the Protein Battle Lines in the 1970s: Nutritional Turmoil in the Postwar World.

This study examines the development of international debates about the perception of nutrients, particularly protein, with a focus on the "Protein Debate" of the late 20th century. The nutritional obsession with protein has been ongoing since the early 19th century, when scientific nutrition was established, and has been at the center of debates surrounding food, agriculture, healthcare, and the environment, changing in shape and form over time. In addition to being a nutrient necessary for optimal physical and mental performance, protein has been a marker of poverty and discrimination at the

Myasthenia gravis and nutrition.

Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune neurological disease characterized by a disorder of nerve transmission at the neuromuscular junction. In this disease, antibodies attack acetylcholine receptors and their associated molecules, disrupting nerve transmission and impairing normal muscle contraction. Myasthenia gravis is diagnosed through physiological and neurological examinations, blood antibody tests, and electronic methods. Various approaches are used for symptom management, including immunosuppressive drugs, acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, and thymectomy. Previous literature has focused pri

Nutrition and Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease begins with cognitive deficiencies that gradually become worse with the extension of cerebral lesions. Other troubles arise such as loss of independence, orientation impairments, disordered eating behavior, and weight loss. This weight loss increases the risk of infections, skin ulcers, and falls and consequently decreases quality of life in Alzheimer's patients. Various hypotheses (increased energy expenditure, mesial temporal cortex atrophy) were suggested to explain weight loss. We set up a Health Promotion Program that aims to prevent weight loss in patients with Alzhei

Psychiatric evaluations of small intestine transplantation patients.

We are gaining experience in small intestine transplantation, however, the procedure is still experimental. Morbidity and mortality can be significant with frequent rehospitalizations. The indications for small intestine transplantation are varied though most patients have developed short gut syndrome requiring total parenteral nutrition (TPN) for nutritional support. Patients may present with a chronic illness (such as Crohn's disease), chronic pain, and psychiatric comorbidity that may need to be addressed during the perioperative period. Faced with the complicated postoperative course, tran

Changes in the plethysmogram patterns of finger reactive hyperemia in nutritional (alcoholic) liver disease patients with increased serum monoamine oxidase activities.

The activity levels of serum monoamine oxidase in nutritional (alcoholic) liver disease patients were elevated beyond the upper normal limit, while those of other subjects without pathologically accelerated fibrosis ranged within normal values. Capillaroscopic and plethysmographic studies on finger reactive hyperemia revealed that two characteristic changes in the blood microcirculation, which indicated an occurrence of increased fibritic process in the capillary wall and skin tissues, were observed only in the nutritional (alcoholic) liver disease patients with the elevated serum monoamine ox

2016 update on eating disorders in athletes: A comprehensive narrative review with a focus on clinical assessment and management.

Eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, can have devastating effects on both the health and performance of athletes. Compared to non-athletes, both female and male athletes are at higher risk of developing an eating disorder. This is especially true for athletes participating in sports where low body weight or leanness confers a competitive advantage. Screening for disordered eating behaviours, eating disorders and for related health consequences should be a standard component of preparticipation examinations, and team physicians should be knowledgeable of the updated d

Malaria and Nutritional Status Among Children With Severe Acute Malnutrition in Niger: A Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between malaria infection and nutritional status is complex. Previous studies suggest malaria may increase the incidence and severity of malnutrition, while malnutrition may increase the risk of malaria infection. Here, we report bidirectional associations between malaria and nutritional status among children with uncomplicated severe acute malnutrition (SAM). METHODS: This study is a secondary analysis of a randomized, controlled trial for the treatment of uncomplicated SAM in Niger. Children aged 6-59 months were enrolled and followed for 12 weeks. Malaria infec

Education and micronutrient deficiencies: an ecological study exploring interactions between women's schooling and children's micronutrient status.

BACKGROUND: Formal education can be a nutrition-sensitive intervention that supports the scale-up and impact of nutrition-specific actions. Maternal education has long been linked to child survival, growth, and development while adult earnings and nutrition are tied to years in school as a child. However, less is known about the relationship between maternal education and the micronutrient status of children, women and the general population. METHODS: Using country-level data and an ecological study design, we explored the global associations between women's educational attainment and: a) ane

Schistosomiasis, intestinal helminthiasis and nutritional status among preschool-aged children in sub-urban communities of Abeokuta, Southwest, Nigeria.

OBJECTIVE: Schistosomiasis and intestinal helminthiasis are major public health problems with school-aged children considered the most at-risk group. Pre-school aged children (PSAC) are excluded from existing control programs because of limited evidence of infections burden among the group. We assessed the prevalence of infections and effect on nutritional status of preschool aged children in Abeokuta, Southwestern Nigeria. RESULTS: A community-based cross-sectional study involving 241 children aged 0-71 months was conducted in 4 sub-urban communities of Abeokuta. Urine and faecal samples wer
