BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) profoundly influence child development. Different patterns of ACEs among boys and girls may be associated with different developmental trajectories.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify patterns of ACEs at age three and tested the associations of these patterns with child behavioral health problems from age three to age fifteen.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: This study used data (N = 4898) from the Fragile Families Child Wellbeing Study.
METHODS: First, this study conducted latent class analysis (LCA) across ten indicators of ACEs at age 3. LC

AIMS: Preventive interventions for children of parents with mental illness are widely recommended. Mental health services entrust concern for patients' children by referrals to child protection services. We investigated service coverage for children following referrals.
METHODS: Data from referrals regarding 376 children of adult psychiatry patients over 2008-2012 was linked to information from municipal records and Danish national registers. We conducted Cox regression and used Kaplan-Meier curves to show time to intervention and cumulative incidence of any child and family support services

Decision-making of women in violent relationships is poorly understood. The study seeks to identify predictors of need-for-action and actions taken by women in violent relationships. The participants were 143 women who experienced violence in previous month from 6 primary care clinics. The methods involved multiple times series using daily assessments of household environment, marital relationship, concerns, violence, and need-for-action collected via telephone interactive voice response for 8 weeks. Outcomes include daily need-for-action and reports of actions taken. Same-day correlates and p

BACKGROUND: Impairment in maternal interpersonal function represents a risk factor for poor psychiatric outcomes among children of depressed mothers. However, the mechanisms by which this effect occurs have yet to be fully elucidated. Elevated levels of emotional or physiological reactivity to interpersonal stress may impact depressed mothers' ability to effectively negotiate child-focused conflicts. This effect may become particularly pronounced when depressed mothers are parenting a psychiatrically ill child.
METHODS: The current feasibility study evaluated mothers' emotional and cardiovasc

Vanishing gastroschisis (VG) is a severe complication of gastroschisis with a high mortality rate. We report here a case of VG with a favorable outcome after a 3-year follow-up. A 26-year-old primigravida woman was referred to Strasbourg University Hospital because her fetus was diagnosed with an isolated gastroschisis at 13-week gestation. The ultrasound evolution was marked by a progressive closure of the abdominal wall defect from 19-week gestation and the appearance of dilated intra-abdominal loops. The child was born with a closed abdominal wall except a small remnant at the level of the

BACKGROUND: Low participation rates in randomised controlled trials involving children are almost a universal problem, leading to high cost and low statistical power. Trial, parent/family, child, and physician factors have been reported to influence parental willingness to consent for paediatric trials.
PURPOSE: To identify modifiable and unmodifiable factors associated with parental consent.
METHODS: Demographic and clinical characteristics of children and their families and physician characteristics associated with parental consent were evaluated in a recent randomised placebo-controlled t

This paper has reviewed research and other papers that have furthered our understanding of the impact of the presence of a child with sickle cell disease on the family. The research suggests that the primary parent in such a family experiences additional emotional strain much like primary parents of children with other chronic illnesses have been found to exhibit. The research also suggests that the ill child's presence influences interpersonal relationships within the family. Specifically, there is some evidence that the relationship between the parents and the relationship between the parent

BACKGROUND: Prenatal depression is associated with offspring behavioral problems, but heterogeneity in the strength of this association is not well understood. Maternal vitamin D concentration during pregnancy is important for fetal brain development and may help explain this variability, with potential differences by timing of exposure and maternal race.
METHODS: Using data from 1,451 mother-child pairs in the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes cohort, linear mixed-effects models examined associations between prenatal depressive symptom severity, gestational 25-hydroxy-vitamin

AIM: Although psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety have been reported to be more common in children with precocious puberty, the psychosocial characteristics of puberty variants remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the psychosocial characteristics of children with premature adrenarche (PA) and evaluate their relationships with clinical and laboratory findings.
METHOD: This prospective case-control study included 34 patients aged 4-8 years diagnosed with PA who presented to our clinic between June and December 2023. Socio-demographic data were collected, and psycholo

BACKGROUND: While previous research indicates that low maternal sensitivity in mother-child interactions puts children at risk of overweight and obesity, maternal intrusiveness has rarely been investigated in association with children's weight. We investigated whether maternal sensitivity and intrusiveness in early childhood predict children's increased body mass index standard deviation scores (BMI-SDS) at school age. BMI-SDS are standardized for age and gender with respect to a reference standard.
METHODS: At baseline (t1), we assessed maternal sensitivity and (non-)intrusiveness of 116 mot

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the associations between childhood sexual abuse (CSA), co-occurrence with other types of maltreatment and adult mental health outcomes, specifically among males. The objectives of this study were to: 1) determine the prevalence of males who have experienced a) childhood maltreatment without CSA; b) CSA without other forms of childhood maltreatment; and c) CSA along with other forms of childhood maltreatment; and 2) determine the relationship between CSA among males and mood, anxiety, substance and personality disorders and suicide attempts.

BACKGROUND: MR relaxometry has been extensively studied in the field of cardiac diseases, but its contribution to liver imaging is unclear. We aimed to compare liver and spleen T1 mapping, T2 mapping, and diffusion-weighted MR imaging (DWI) for assessing the diagnosis and severity of cirrhosis.
METHODS: We prospectively included 129 patients with normal (n=40) and cirrhotic livers (n=89) from May to September 2014. Non-enhanced liver T1 mapping, splenic T2 mapping, and liver and splenic DWI were measured and compared for assessing cirrhosis severity using Child-Pugh score, MELD score, and pre

In a previous study we found a very high prevalence of psychological distress in mothers of children admitted to a nutritional rehabilitation unit (NRU) in Malawi, Africa. The objective of this study was to compare the prevalence and severity of maternal distress within the NRU with that in other paediatric wards. Given the known association between poor maternal psychological well-being and child undernutrition in low- and middle-income countries, we hypothesised that distress would be higher among NRU mothers. Mothers of consecutive paediatric inpatients in a NRU, a high-dependency (and rese

BACKGROUND: Maternal prenatal folate status has been linked to neurodevelopmental disorders, but the association with child emotional and behavioral problems is unclear.
OBJECTIVES: We assessed the association of maternal folate status during pregnancy with child emotional and behavioral problems. Also, we examined whether any association between folate status and child problems is a consequence of maternal folic acid supplement use or variation in maternal MTHFR genotype.
DESIGN: Within a population-based cohort, we measured maternal plasma folate concentrations in early pregnancy and asses

Localized aggressive periodontitis (LAP) in child involving primary dentition is a rare disease. The main characteristics of LAP are deep periodontal pockets, bone loss, tooth mobility, and, sometimes, spontaneous tooth loss. The LAP involves only some specific teeth. Glanzmann's thrombasthenia (GT) is a rare autosomal recessive bleeding disorder. The paper's aim is to present the case of a 5-year-old girl with GT presenting LAP, and discuss her clinical management. We identified a child with KLF1-E325K congenital dyserythropoietic anemia type IV who experienced a severe clinical course, fetal anemia, hydrops fetalis, and postnatal transfusion dependence only partially responsive to splenectomy. The child also had complete sex reversal, the cause which remains undetermined. To gain insights into our patient's severe hematologic phenotype, detailed analyses were performed. Erythrocytes from the patient and parents demonstrated functional abnormalities of the erythrocyte membrane, attributed to variants in the α-spectrin gene. Hypomorphic alleles in SEC23B

Fulminant postoperative group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal infections present a serious and potentially lethal threat to children. Three children with severe postoperative streptococcal wound infections are presented. Each child developed high fever within the first 24 hr after surgery, followed shortly by signs of septic shock. In all patients, the clinical appreciation of wound infection became apparent late in the course of the illness. All three children had white blood cell counts below 6000/cu mm. One child developed crepitus in the incision; another showed radiographic evidence of fre
