Optic disc morphology in eyes after nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy.

PURPOSE: Parapapillary chorioretinal atrophy, neuroretinal rim loss, and a decrease of retinal vessel diameter have been described to occur in glaucomatous eyes. This study was conducted to evaluate the frequency and degree of these signs in nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION). METHODS: We evaluated morphometrically and compared stereo color optic disc photographs of 17 patients after AION, 184 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma, and 98 normal subjects. RESULTS: The optic disc area and retinal vessel diameter were significantly smaller and the visibility of the reti

Chemical characteristics and mineral composition of quinoa by near-infrared spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) has been traditionally used as a foodstuff in the Andes and it has gained increasing interest in recent years owing to its high nutritional value. The potential of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for estimating chemical compounds in quinoa was studied because of the possibility of conducting direct measurement without prior sample treatment. RESULTS: The use of NIRS technology with a remote reflectance fiber-optic probe for the analysis of major compounds and mineral composition of 48 quinoa samples was studied. The calibration of the NIRS inst

Age-related changes in upper airway muscles morphological and oxidative properties.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common disorder of the middle aged and elderly. It results from the decrease in upper airway muscle (UAM) tone that occurs during sleep. It is unclear whether age-related changes in UAM could constitute a contributory mechanism to the increased prevalence of OSA with increasing age, and previous papers evaluating the effects of aging on UAM in rats reported conflicting results. In the present study, we compared, in four age groups of Wistar rats (6-24 months), fiber-type distribution, mean cross-sectional fiber area and succinate dehydrogenase optical density

Correction method and tissue simulation approach for system polarization mode dispersion in polarization-sensitive OCT.

Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) caused by single-mode fibers and circulators is a major source of noise in fiber-based PS-OCT systems. It introduces an unknown wavelength dependent change of the polarization state incident on the sample, which can lead to erroneous local optic axis and retardation measurements. In this paper, we present a correction method for PMD and other possible wavelength dependent system distortions, based on a Jones and Stokes eigenvector analysis. The method was validated in a new PS-OCT simulation framework of birefringent tissue and system PMD. It was then used to

Toxic optic neuropathy associated with lamotrigine and levetiracetam dual therapy.

We report the case of an early adolescent male on lamotrigine and levetiracetam therapy with a 1-month history of progressive, bilateral, painless visual loss which resolved on cessation of lamotrigine. To our knowledge, we present the first case of lamotrigine and levetiracetam dual therapy associated with toxic optic neuropathy, supported by electrophysiology and optical coherence tomography (OCT) changes. Electrophysiology findings were consistent with retinal ganglion cell dysfunction, with bilateral optic nerve involvement. Macula OCT showed mild retinal ganglion cell loss in all inner qu

The use of optical coherence tomography in neurology.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive imaging technique routinely used in ophthalmology to visualize and quantify the layers of the retina. OCT allows direct visualization and measurement of the topography of the optic nerve head and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness in the peripapillary and macular regions with micron-scale resolution. These measurements are of particular interest in optic neuropathies and in numerous neurologic disorders in which there is axonal loss, such as multiple sclerosis. This article provides a detailed overview of OCT and its potential applications i

Silver lampreys (Ichthyomyzon unicuspis) lack a gonadotropin-releasing hormone- and FMRFamide-immunoreactive terminal nerve.

The terminal nerve is a ganglionated cranial nerve with peripheral processes that enter the nasal cavity and centrally directed processes that enter the forebrain. Members of all classes of gnathostomes have been found to possess a terminal nerve, some components of which demonstrate immunoreactivity to the peptides Phe-Met-Arg-Phe-NH2 (FMRFamide) and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). To explore the possibility that lampreys possess a terminal nerve, we examined the distribution of these peptides in the silver lamprey, Ichthyomyzon unicuspis, by using antisera to FMRFamide and to four for

Focal Capillary Dropout Associated With Optic Disc Drusen Using Optical Coherence Tomographic Angiography.

Optic disc drusen may be a cause of visual field defects and visual loss. The mechanism by which this occurs is unclear. We report a patient who developed decreased vision in the right eye and was found to have a heavy burden of superficial optic disc drusen. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) confirmed focal retinal nerve fiber layer thinning that corresponded with the distribution of drusen. OCT angiography, with superficial laminar segmentation, showed focal capillary attenuation overlying the most prominent drusen. These findings demonstrate alterations in the superficial retinal capillary

Retinal nerve fiber layer thickness as a biomarker of uveitis activity: A systematic review.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT)-derived peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (pRNFL) has emerged as a promising surrogate for inflammatory activity in uveitis. We conducted a PRISMA-compliant systematic search of PubMed and Embase to identify studies that measured pRNFL in infectious and noninfectious uveitis. Twenty-three studies comprising 2632 eyes met our criteria. Risk of bias was appraised with the ROBINS-I tool and ranged from low to serious, predominantly moderate (13/23) and serious (9/23). Between study heterogeneity was substantial across OCT platforms, anatomic loca

The role of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in optic neuritis (ON).

Axonal and neuronal degeneration are important features of multiple sclerosis (MS) and other neurologic disorders that affect the anterior visual pathway. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive technique that allows imaging of the retinal layers. Our aim was to examine retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and macular volume (MV), measred by OCT in patients with history of optic neuritis (ON). Patients with chronic ON had significantly decreased mean RNFL thickness and total MV when compared to acute ON eyes, controls and unaffected fellow eyes. There was also statistically
