OBJECTIVES: Surgical management of parotid pleomorphic adenoma ranges from total parotidectomy to extracapsular dissection (ECD). Minimalistic techniques aim to preserve function and minimize the rate of recurrence. This study assesses functional, aesthetic, and disease control outcomes post-ECD through a sole transverse cervical incision for parotid pleomorphic adenoma.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This longitudinal analysis enrolled 36 consecutive patients with pleomorphic adenoma who underwent ECD via a single cervical incision. Complications, satisfaction, salivary function, and tumor recurrenc

OBJECTIVES: To describe a patient with BRCA1 mutation, mucoepidermoid parotid, multiple breasts, and thyroid cancers.
CASE REPORT: A women was diagnosed at 33-years-age with a triple-negative breast cancer (right breast), at 43-years-age with a triple-negative breast cancer in left breast and at 53-years-age with a primary papillary-thyroid carcinoma. At 55-years-age, she was diagnosed with a primary mucoepidermoid carcinoma in right parotid, and concomitantly, her right nipple was affected by Paget's disease and a recurrent carcinoma in right breast (HR + /HER2 = 3 +). At 57-years-age, after

Knowledge of the processes leading to the development of epimyoepithelial islands bears on histogenetic and morphogentic processes in salivary gland tumors. Immunohistochemical and ultrastructural investigations of the cellular composition of epimyoepithelial islands were carried out on three examples of benign lymphoepithelial lesions with varying histologic features. The monoclonal anti-keratin antibody 312C8-1, which specifically decorates myoepithelial cells of the normal salivary gland, also stains the myoepithelial cells surrounding residual acini and intercalated ducts in benign lymphoe

Parotid gland tumors (PGTs) are the most common salivary gland neoplasms, encompassing diverse benign and malignant pathologies. Accurate preoperative diagnosis is vital for surgical planning, functional outcomes (e.g., facial nerve preservation), and prognosis. While histopathology remains the gold standard, non-invasive imaging, such as ultrasound (US) and MRI, plays a critical role in initial tumor characterization. US is widely used due to its accessibility and cost-effectiveness, but its utility is constrained by acoustic limitations and operator dependence. MRI, with superior soft tissue

Intraductal papillomas have been mostly described in minor salivary glands but are extremely rare in the parotid gland. Consequently, limited information is available to guide otolaryngologists and pathologists in managing intraductal papillomas, specifically in the parotid gland. Diagnosing intraductal papillomas in this location poses significant challenges. In this report, the authors present a new case and first conduct a systematic literature review of the intraductal papillomas originating from the parotid gland. This study contributes valuable insights that can improve diagnostic accura

Primary angiosarcoma of salivary glands is a rare entity that most commonly arises in the parotid gland and affects adults and the elderly. Angiosarcoma of the parotid gland in a child is exceedingly rare and thus can be a diagnostic challenge. We present a case of angiosarcoma of the parotid gland in a 6-year-old female child with bilateral lung metastases. The patient underwent chemotherapy and showed a partial response. Awareness of this entity in salivary glands is important for accurate and early diagnosis due to its distinct therapeutic and prognostic implications.

Head and neck cancer is the seventh most common cancer globally, with over 300 thousand deaths annually. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of head and neck tumors is a well-known method for its evaluation, although malignant and benign imaging tumors often overlap. Permeability is an advanced method performed by MRI that assist in the diagnosis and evaluation of the neoplasm treatments, having a well-established role in some cases, such as salivary gland tumors, and promising in others, such as squamous cell carcinoma and lymph node evaluation. This pictorial review aims to demonstrate the dive

Pancreatic tumors are mostly primary tumors, with only rare metastatic tumors described in the literature. Here we report an unusual case of fine-needle aspiration (FNA) diagnosis of high grade adenoid cystic carcinoma of the parotid gland metastatic to the pancreas. The aspirate smears were moderately cellular and revealed numerous basaloid neoplastic cells. The cytomorphologic differential diagnosis included primary pancreatic tumor with small cell morphology as well as metastatic tumors. By immunocytochemistry, the tumor cells were positive for cytokeratins (AE1/AE3, CAM5.2, and CK7), and C

Dedifferentiated epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (DEMC) is very rare salivary gland neoplasm with only anecdotal reports. We present an analysis of DEMC, based on a case and review of literature. Our patient, an 85-year-old woman, presented with a submandibular mass of 5 years duration that was increasing in size over a 5-week period. Histologically, there were areas of typical epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma, with dedifferentiation of both components, manifesting morphologically as salivary duct carcinoma and areas of myoepithelial carcinoma. A review of literature revealed 21 previousl

Four cases of epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of the salivary glands arose as painless masses in patients over 60 years old, three in the parotid and one in the submandibular gland. Histologically, all the tumours were composed of small ducts with a double cell lining surrounded by a basement membrane. The inner cells were epithelial and the outer cells myoepithelial, the latter usually possessing clear cytoplasm. There was a variable degree of intervening hyalinised stroma. All the tumours were partly encapsulated, but also displayed local invasiveness. One of the tumours also showed areas

Intraductal carcinoma (IDC) of the salivary gland is an uncommon neoplasm frequently associated with RET rearrangements, particularly in the intercalated duct subtype. Although invasive carcinoma ex IDC has increasingly been recognized, most reported cases have demonstrated overtly invasive or high-grade morphology distinct from the associated intraductal component. Herein, we report a case of NCOA4::RET fusion-positive IDC of the parotid gland showing extensive infiltrative growth into adjacent soft tissue despite deceptively low-grade cribriform histomorphology. Tumor cells showed diffuse SO

Parotidectomy is a commonly performed surgery for various indications, including inflammatory conditions, infection, congenital symptomatic malformations, and neoplasm resection. Irrespective of its indication, the performance requires meticulous surgical navigation by highly experienced surgeons because of its proximity to the facial nerve. While the surgical technique continues to evolve, nerve paralysis and nerve-related complications remain a significant concern following an intervention. Due to the high learning curve required to reduce the incidence of surgical iatrogenic events, a novel
