PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this review article different relevant applications of botulinum toxin type A are demonstrated in patients with head and neck cancer.
RECENT FINDINGS: Patients with head and neck cancers of different etiologies often suffer from disorders concerning their musculature (for example, synkinesis in mimic muscles) or gland secretion in the head and neck region. This leads to many problems and reduces their quality of life. The application of botulinum toxin type A can improve movement disorders like synkinesis following reconstructive surgery in patients with cancers of the p

OBJECTIVE: The bacteria Bartonella henselae has been known as the principal causative agent of cat-scratch disease (CSD) since 1992. It is an important cause of infectious lymphadenopathies in the head and neck. Nevertheless, CSD often remains unrecognized in cases of cervicofacial lymph node enlargement.
STUDY DESIGN: Between January 1997 and May 2003, we conducted a prospective clinical study including 721 patients with primarily unclear masses in the head and neck.
RESULTS: CSD was diagnosed by serology and molecular investigations in 99 patients (13.7%; median age 33 years). Cervicofacia

Monocytoid B cell lymphoma (MBCL) is an immunologically and morphologically well-defined low-grade lymphoma with a predilection for lymph nodes of the parotid region. We describe an association of MBCL with anti-myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG) polyneuropathy in a 53-year-old male. The diagnosis of stage IV MBCL with nodular bone marrow infiltration, Sjögren's syndrome and sensorimotor polyneuropathy was made in October 1996. Serum immunoelectrophoresis demonstrated IgMkappa paraprotein. This was then cross-reacted with epitopes of MAG and sulphated glucuronyl paragloboside (SGPG) on myeli…

Metastatic tumors to the head from infraclavicular primaries are relatively uncommon. The vast majority of primary tumors that metastasize to the head originate from the lung and breast. Tumors metastatic to the masseter are exceedingly rare with only one other case being reported in the literature. The case of a 34-year-old woman with a history of surgically-treated small cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix is presented. This case and our review of the literature illustrates the unusual nature of metastatic patterns in the head and their diagnostic complexity. Masses localized to the buccoma

An antibody to the 96 kD alpha-subunit of the Na+, K+-ATPase from Bufo marinus has been used in immunostaining rat kidney and salivary glands. Intense staining was observed on basolateral membranes of distal tubules of the kidney and striated ducts of the three major salivary glands. Less intense staining was seen on the basolateral membranes of parotid acinar cells, but no staining was seen on the acinar cells of submandibular or sublingual glands. These sites of staining have been shown, by other methods, to posses substantial Na+, K+-ATPase, indicating that the antibody recognizes antigenic

The maxillary vein, despite its clinical significance, remains underexplored in anatomical literature. It plays a crucial role in venous drainage of the maxillofacial region and is closely associated with surgical procedures such as sagittal split ramus osteotomy, mandibuloplasty, and condylar or parotid surgeries. Due to its variable anatomy and proximity to critical structures, the maxillary vein poses a risk of significant hemorrhage if injured. Its small size and deep location make preoperative identification challenging, especially without contrast-enhanced imaging. Embryologically, the m

INTRODUCTION: Neuroglial heterotopia represents a rare differential diagnosis for pediatric neck masses. Its occurrence in the parapharyngeal space is exceptionally uncommon, with fewer than 30 documented cases in the literature.
CASE REPORT: This report details the case of a 4-year-old girl initially noted to have a mass in the right parotid area at birth with no symptoms. After observation, she returned at the age of 4 with dysphagia and a visible mass in the same area. Subsequent CT imaging revealed a mass in the right parapharyngeal space, prompting surgical intervention. Histological exa

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common benign salivary gland tumour of the head and neck region, most commonly seen in parotid glands. These may arise also from minor salivary glands of the upper aerodigestive tract comprises the upper lip, cheek, floor of the mouth and rarely from mucoserous glands in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. A middle-aged man, who had undergone surgery for a nasal mass 14 years ago, presented with headache and visual complaints from a recurrent mass originating from the sphenoid sinus. Isolated sphenoid sinus space-occupying lesions have always been a diagnost

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) due to a New World species of Leishmania is increasingly seen among returning international travelers, and most cases arise from travel to Mexico, Central and South America. We described a case of CL in a women presenting a nonhealing ulceration under her right ear with slight increase of size of the left parotid gland under the skin lesion, evolving for 4 months. In her history of travel, she reported a ten-day stay in Mexico during the Christmas vacation in the Yucatan region with only half a day walking in the tropical forest. Diagnosis of CL due to Leishmania m

For many decades, surgery has been the primary treatment for malignant submandibular gland neoplasms. Nonetheless, due to the heterogeneity and rarity of submandibular gland malignant tumors and the high frequency of chronic benign processes in this region, management can be complex. Preoperative investigations, such as fine-needle aspiration and imaging, are critical to achieve the correct diagnosis so that appropriate surgery can be planned. In general, for malignant submandibular gland neoplasms, the minimal treatment necessary is excision of the submandibular gland with level I lymph node

Background. Merkel cell carcinoma of the head and neck is a rare and aggressive malignant tumour. Both the dermatological and surgical colleagues should be aware of this entity as lesions usually present on sun exposed areas of the skin such as the head and neck. Main Observation and Treatment. A 69-year-old male originally presented to the maxillofacial surgery department with a growing lesion on the left eyebrow. Histological analysis confirmed Merkel cell carcinoma and consequently surgical excision was carried out. A follow-up PET/CT scan 2 years later demonstrated a hotspot in the left pa

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are extremely rare neoplasms with a variable natural history and biologic behavior, ranging from completely benign to malignant tumors with fatal outcome. They have no common identifiable cause, although some authors have assumed that any inflammatory stimulus may cause these pseudotumors. They are most commonly found in the lungs. Extrapulmonary sites include abdomen, retroperitoneum and extremities. IMTs rarely affect the head and neck, but the most common subsites in this region include the orbit, larynx, mouth, tonsils, parapharyngeal space, thyro

INTRODUCTION: Only 10% of intramuscular hemangiomas (IMH) are located in the head and neck region. There are very few reports of masseteric location. The present study of a case of intra-masseteric cavernous hemangioma discusses clinical presentation, paraclinical diagnostic workup and treatment options.
CASE REPORT: A 70-year-old male patient consulted for a swelling of 2 years' evolution, anterior to the left parotid gland. The swelling was firm, painless, well-contoured, oblong, 3 cm on its long axis, and located in the masseter muscle. There was no effect of head position on tumor volume.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether so far unknown chromosomal alterations in pleomorphic adenoma (PA) exist. To this end, tissue samples from 18 patients with parotid gland PA were studied by comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) using Phi-29-DNA-polymerase for DNA amplification. The most common aberrations were losses of chromosomal material of 19p (6/18), 9q, 16p, and 19q (in 3 out of 18 patients each). Additional losses were observed on 4p, 5q, and 17q (2 / 18 each). Gains involved chromosomes 2p, 4p, 6p, 17q, and 21q (2 / 18 each). Losses of 19p have been associated with in

Low-grade cribriform cystadenocarcinoma (LGCCC) is a rare tumor, defined in the 2005 WHO classification as a primary salivary duct tumor. Previously, the neoplasm had been recognized as a variant of salivary duct carcinomas. A 56-year-old Japanese woman noticed a mass in the left subaural region. On radiological examinations, a multicystic tumor was seen in the left parotid gland. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy was performed. The smears revealed several characteristic cytologic features. The tumor cells were arranged in irregular overlapping and showed inconspicuous nuclear atypia with variable

Neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) is a cancer arising from neuroendocrine cells, most commonly in the lungs. Rarely, NEC may metastasize to the head and neck. Here, we present 4 cases of metastatic NEC to the jaws and major salivary glands. Patients were 3 females and 1 male, ages ranging from 48 to 82 (mean 59). Three primaries were located in the lung and one in the breast. The parotid was the site of metastasis in 2 patients, with the jaws being involved in the other 2. Histologic and immunohistochemical examination revealed 2 well-differentiated NEC and 2 poorly differentiated NEC. Treatment

Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is a distinctive and aggressive neoplasm. The most frequent site of origin is the parotid gland, followed by the submandibular gland. SDC originating in the minor salivary glands, particularly in the ectopic glands within the mandible, is extremely rare. We describe a 62-year-old man with SDC in the mandible, who presented with a painless lump in the right submandibular region (later identified as lymph node metastasis) and ipsilateral mental nerve palsy. Histologic examination after ablative surgery revealed SDC originating in the mandible and cervical nodal meta

Murine lymph nodes are intensively studied but often assigned incorrectly in scientific papers. In BALB/cAnNCrl mice, we characterized a total of 22 different lymph nodes. Peripheral nodes were situated in the head and neck region (mandibular, accessory mandibular, superficial parotid, cranial deep cervical nodes), and at the forelimb (proper axillary, accessory axillary nodes) and hindlimb (subiliac, sciatic, popliteal nodes). Intrathoracic lymph nodes included the cranial mediastinal, tracheobronchal and caudal mediastinal nodes. Abdominal lymph nodes were associated with the gastrointestina
