Arthrosonography--technique, sonographic anatomy, and pathology.

Ultrasound scanning of the hips, shoulders, and elbows was investigated as a noninvasive technique for the diagnosis of joint disorders. Sixteen patients with known intra-articular fluid collections, loose bodies, or periarticular abnormalities were studied. Ultrasound images clearly demonstrated the contours of bony surfaces, normal muscles, and other soft-tissue structures around joints. Intra-articular fluid collections were seen as sonolucent halos around the femoral neck and humeral head and as an oval, sonolucent area anterior to the distal humerus. Collections of fluid as small as 10 ml

[Nervous system pathology in uterine myomas].

Clinico-physiological examinations of 218 patients with uterine myoma were carried out using the methods of electromyography and rheopgraphy. The following syndromes were revealed: a myopathic and a radiculoalgic ones; the syndrome of the external dermal femoral and the femorogenital nerves. The pathogenesis of these syndromes consists in compression of the lumbar arteries and the minor pelvis ganglia by the enlarged uterus. On condition of timely treatment including surgical ablation of the myoma the prognosis of the neurological disturbances is, as a rule, favourable.

The pathology of a cricopharyngeal dysphagia.

The paper describes the changes in the cricopharyngeal muscle in seven cases of dysphagia resulting from obstruction at this level which was relieved by myotomy. Histological features included degeneration and regeneration in the muscle fibres with interstitial fibrosis which was severe in some of the cases. It is considered that this restrictive fibrosis is the cause of the dysphagia and that it is secondary to muscle fibre damage, the cause of which is at present obscure. Minor degrees of muscle damage and regeneration were seen rarely in controls and fibrosis was never present. There was no

The pathology of cartilage in chondrodysplasias.

The pathology of four types of chondrodysplasias, viz., type II achondrogenesis, thanatophoric dwarfism, Saldino-Noonan syndrome, and chondrodysplasia punctata were studied. In each of these disorders, cells with features similar to the chief and dark chondrocytes of normal hyaline cartilage were seen to be altered in different ways. There was a total absence of chief cells in type II achondrogenesis. All the chondrocytes present were of one variety at different states of maturation, with the fully matured cell having features of dark chondrocytes. The absence of chief cells was associated wit…

The pathology and biochemistry of paraquat.

After the administration of paraquat to rats the lung is the organ most severely damaged. The pathology in the lung can be divided into two distinct phases: (1) a destruction phase lasting a few days with damage to the type I and type II alveolar epithelial cells, oedema and haemorrhage (most of the rats which die after dosing with paraquat do so during this phase); (2) a reparative phase with regeneration of the epithelium and, in areas of severe damage, a characteristic proliferation of fibroblasts. In both phases of the lesion the death of the rats results from anoxia. Paraquat is selective…

Pathology of adult respiratory distress syndrome.

The morphology and sequential evolution of the pulmonary lesions in respiratory distress syndrome have been reviewed. Reasons have been presented to support the conclusion that these lesions are in the main produced by toxic effects of oxygen rather than the underlying disease process which initiated the episode of respiratory failure. The mechanism of oxygen toxicity has been briefly reviewed. The implication of these considerations is that in any patient with acute respiratory impairment, oxygen should be used as therapy only if it is required to prevent death from hypoxia and should be used

Pathology of analgesic nephropathy: Australian experience.

Analgesic nephropathy was first studied in Switzerland and Scandinavia, and most observers thought that papillary necrosis, a feature of the pathology, was the result of chronic interstitial nephritis, the other principal feature. From 1962, reports indicated a high incidence of analgesic nephropathy in Australia and suggested that papillary changes preceded cortical damage. Later, associated uroepithelial carcinoma was noted. Early papillary lesions consist of necrosis of elements around groups of collecting ducts. Necrosis extends upward through the medulla from the papilla and gradually int…

Pathology of experimental erysipelas in turkeys.

Gross and histopathologic lesions were studied in 10 Broad-Breasted White turkeys with acute erysipelas induced experimentally. The gross pathologic features of the disease conformed very closely with descriptions in the literature (7). Histopathologic evaluation was concentrated on the inoculation site (skin), proventriculus, ileocecal area of the intestine, liver, spleen, kidney, lung, and heart. In all organs examined the dominant histopathologic alteration was vascular damage as evidenced by: generalized congestion, edema, focal hemorrhage, disseminated fibrin thrombi, and numerous bacteri

Mannosidosis: pathology of the nervous system.

In a girl with mannosidosis, who died at 3 1/2 years of age, histopathological and ultrastructural changes in the nervous system are described. A widespread neuronal storage evidenced by ballooning of the neuronal perikarya is the salient histological feature and the occurrence of electron-lucent storage vacuoloes in neurons, astrocytes, endothelial cells and pericytes is the most striking ultrastructural feature of mannosidosis in the nervous system. By virtue of the deficiency of acidic alpha-mannosidases A and B, the accumulation of mannose-containing oligosaccharides in tissues and the occ

The pathology of schistosomiasis in Sudan.

The pathology of schistosomiasis in an autopsy material consisting of medico-legal cases and unclaimed bodies in the Sudan is described. The limitations of this type of study are pointed out. S. mansoni-infection and S. haematobium-infection occurred with a frequency of 14.3 per cent and 4.5 per cent of autopsies respectively. There was a geographical difference in the severity of S. mansoni-infection in two endemic areas in the country; it was particularly severe in patients coming from Bor area in the Southern Sudan. In autopsies with S. mansomi-infection intestinal polyposis and cor pulmona…

The pathology of congenital localized gigantism.

Two cases of congenital localized gigantism are described. They illustrate a form of segmental limb disproportion, characterized pathologically by an excessive linear growth of the skeletal structures and by soft tissue lipomatosis. The gigantism was confined to bones of the right great toe and adjacent metatarsus in one case; it affected the long bones of a lower extremity in the second case. Case 2, followed for over 7 years, developed a fibrovascular hamartomatous neoplasm of rapid growth and some cytological atypia in infancy--but this was well controlled by conservative surgery. This type

Smoking during pregnancy and placental pathology.

The pathological study of all placentas from women smoking at least five cigarettes daily during pregnancy (248 cases) and of those placentas from a corresponding control group randomised among all the non-smokers (196 cases) has been set up at the maternity hospital of Haguenau (France) since 1974. The systematic histological examination has shown among smokers a higher frequency of abonormal trophoblast and especially of nuclear clumps in the syncytiotrophoblast. On the other hand, according to a standard protocol, the grouping of various abnormalities has shown, among smokers, a higher freq
