BACKGROUND: This study reports a case of Unilateral Endogenous Fungal Endophthalmitis After Esophageal Cancer Surgery.
CASE PRESENTATION: One patient presented with a month-long loss of vision in his left eye, he had surgery for esophageal cancer 2 months earlier. The patient underwent cataract surgery (by phacoemulsification) in the left eye combined with 25-gauge vitrectomy and silicone oil tamponade. The microbiological culture pointed to infection with Candida albicans. At 3-month follow-up, the unaided visual acuity of left eye was 0.02 and corrected visual acuity was 0.2. In addition, t

We report two patients who underwent orbital decompression for compressive optic neuropathy due to a metastatic orbital tumor from breast cancer. One patient was a 47-year-old woman with right compressive optic neuropathy. Balanced orbital decompression was performed 11 days after her first visit. At postoperative week 1, her right visual acuity and critical flicker frequency value had improved from 0.1 and 20 Hz to 1.0 and 35 Hz, respectively, and good vision was maintained at 6 months postoperatively. The other patient was a 61-year-old woman with right compressive optic neuropathy. Medial o

We report a case of ciliary body melanocytoma in a Korean patient, which presented as an intermittently painful pigmented iris mass and was successfully managed by iridocyclectomy. A 52-year-old healthy man presented with an irregularly-shaped and heavily-pigmented mass at the iris root of his right eye. Visual acuity of the right eye was 20/20 with normal intraocular pressure. Ultrasound biomicroscopy showed a 1.5x1.3-mm ciliary-body mass with extension into the iris root. Iridocyclectomy with scleral resection under a lamellar scleral flap was performed, and the histopathologic features of t

We report the case of a 12-year-old boy with severe keratoconus who had uneventful deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) using the big-bubble technique in the left eye for severe loss of best spectacle-corrected visual acuity and contact lens intolerance. Two weeks after surgery, the patient experienced accidental blunt trauma to the operative eye and developed a traumatic 180-degree superior wound dehiscence of the lamellar graft without perforation into the anterior chamber. The DALK technique provided adequate tectonic support to prevent a ruptured globe throughout the traumatic event

BACKGROUND: Neuroretinitis is a clinical entity usually seen in young healthy adults, that is characterized by rapid profound unilateral loss of vision and includes optic nerve head edema, splinter hemorrhages, macular exudate in a stellate pattern, and variable vitreous inflammation. There are numerous entities that can cause a picture of neuroretinitis ranging from vascular to infectious to autoimmune.
PATIENT AND METHODS: We report two patients with neuroretinitis, who presented with unilateral blurred vision and had serologic evidence of Toxoplasma gondii infection.
RESULTS: Both patient

A 28-year old female patient presented with unilateral dropped visual acuity and a central scotoma. Fundus examination and a fluorescein angiogram were suggestive for central retinal vein prethrombosis. Further tests revealed an isolated protein S deficiency for which oral anticoagulation therapy was initiated. Six months later she presented with new symptoms of a right retrobulbar pain on ocular movements. The retinal vessels had normalized with improved visual acuity. Re-evaluation of the fluorescein angiogram taken six months earlier showed an image compatible with unilateral vasculitis. Du

BACKGROUND: It is well known that topical as well as systemic treatment with corticosteroids may have ocular side effects. The most common are the development of cataract and increase of intraocular pressure, however, alteration of the retinal pigment epithelium may also occur.
PATIENT: A 64-year old male experienced a progressive decrease of visual acuity over a time period of 6 weeks. Ophthalmologic examination revealed a severe diffuse retinal pigment epitheliopathy with serous detachment of the neurosensory retina. This patient was treated with systemic methylprednisolone for chronic glom

We treated four white women with extrascleral extension of suspected ciliary body melanomas with a modified block excision (three patients) or enucleation (one patient). Light and transmission electron microscopy established the diagnosis of ciliary body melanocytoma with extrascleral extension in each patient. Two eyes were irradiated before block excision. Block excision involved simultaneous removal of full-thickness cornea and sclera, iris, and ciliary body with tectonic corneoscleral grafting. The postoperative visual acuity of the three patients treated with a modified block excision was

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy of early optic nerve decompression in comatose and conscious patients with indirect traumatic optic neuropathy.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of 65 optic nerve decompressions.
METHODS: The total collective of optic nerve decompressions comprised 65 patients treated within the period between February 1987 and December 1998. Thirteen of these 65 patients (average age, 32 y) were comatose and required critical care treatment, so visual acuity could not be measured. The indication for surgical decompression in all patients was based on the ophthalmol

Prior studies have shown that patients suffering from chronic Low Back Pain (cLBP) have impaired somatosensory processing including reduced tactile acuity, i.e. reduced ability to resolve fine spatial details with the perception of touch. The central mechanism(s) underlying reduced tactile acuity are unknown but may include changes in specific brain circuitries (e.g. neuroplasticity in the primary somatosensory cortex, S1). Furthermore, little is known about the linkage between changes in tactile acuity and the amelioration of cLBP by somatically-directed therapeutic interventions, such as acu
