Functional Trajectories and Resilience Among Adults With Advanced Lung Cancer.

INTRODUCTION: To evaluate whether and the degree to which patients with advanced NSCLC (aNSCLC) receiving lung cancer treatments will experience functional disability or have resilience and to identify characteristics associated with functional disability. METHODS: We evaluated longitudinal data of patients with aNSCLC receiving treatment in the Beating Lung Cancer in Ohio prospective cohort study. Disability versus resilience in functional status (usual activities, mobility, and self-care) was measured monthly for 8 months using the EuroQol-5D-5L. Data captured included baseline demographics

Disentangling Within- and Between-Person Effects During Response Inhibition in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Background: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has been related to worse performance, abnormal brain activity, and functional connectivity during response inhibition. Whether these findings are indications of stable traits that contribute to the development of the disorder, or whether they are a result of the state severity of obsessions and anxiety, remains unclear since previous research mainly has employed cross-sectional designs. The present study aimed to assess longitudinal between- and within-person relationships between symptoms, task performance, right inferior frontal gyrus brain ac

Effects of acute intrathecal baclofen in an animal model of TBI-induced spasticity, cognitive, and balance disabilities.

Spasticity is a major health problem for patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). In addition to spasticity, TBI patients exhibit enduring cognitive, balance, and other motor impairments. Although the use of antispastic medications, particularly ITB, can decrease the severity of TBI-induced spasticity, current guidelines preclude the use of ITB during the first year after TBI. Therefore, the present study was performed to quantitate disability in an animal model of closed-head TBI (cTBI; Mararou's model) after ITB treatment. After cTBI, significant deficits in spasticity and gait, cognitive

Implicit associations and social anxiety.

The aim of this study was to test whether an Implicit Association Test (IAT) with self- and social anxiety-words is sensitive to differences in trait social anxiety, and to an experimental induction of social anxiety. This was performed in the context of a partial replication of a previous study, in which Mauss et al. (2004) compared high and low trait socially anxious individuals before and after a social anxiety induction (an impromptu speech). Mauss et al.'s findings were replicated; that is, (i) the social anxiety induction produced increases in self-rated anxiety, self-rated physiological

[An evaluation of anxiety and depression symptoms in fibromyalgia].

The objective of this study was to identify the frequency of anxiety and depression symptoms by verifying the association between anxiety traits, current depression and anxiety symptoms in fibromyalgia patients. Interviews were performed with 60 subjects diagnosed with fibromyalgia at the Rheumatology Outpatient Clinic at Universidade Federal de Sergipe between August 2007 and March 2008, in which two questionnaires were administered: the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). The frequency of anxiety and depression symptoms was, respectively

Cognitive and fine motor performance in people above 65 years of age with and without HIV.

Cognitive and motor performances decline with ageing, and this may be exacerbated in people with HIV (PWH) due to several factors. The study aimed to compare cognitive and fine motor performance between older adults with and without HIV. We conducted a cross-sectional study of participants ≥ 65 years in the GEPPO cohort using Mini-Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination (MACE) and Grooved Pegboard Test (GPT). Quality of life, depression, anxiety, and sleep quality were also measured. PWH (n = 239) were younger (73.7 vs. 80.6 years) and more commonly males at birth (85 vs. 25%) than PWoH (n = 52).

"Back Health 24/7/365"-A Novel, Comprehensive "One Size Fits All" Workplace Health Promotion Intervention for Occupational Back Health among Hospital Employees.

BACKGROUND: Projects for workplace health promotion (WHP) for back pain traditionally focus exclusively on work-related but not on leisure-time stress on the spine. We developed a comprehensive WHP project on the back health of hospital workers regardless of the physical characteristics of their work and compared its effects on sedentary and physically active hospital workers. METHODS: Study assessments were carried out before and six months after participation in the WHP intervention. The primary outcome parameter was back pain (Oswestry Disability Index, ODI). Facial and Emotion Recognition Deficits in Myasthenia Gravis.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a neuromuscular disease of autoimmune etiology and chronic evolution. In addition to the muscle weakness and fatigue that characterize MG, in some studies patients show an inferior performance in cognitive tasks and difficulties in recognizing basic emotions from facial expressions. However, it remains unclear if these difficulties are due to anxious-depressive symptoms that these patients present or related to cognitive abilities, such as facial recognition. This study had a descriptive cross-sectional design with a sample of 92 participants, 52 patients with MG and

Subjective deficits of attention, cognition and depression in patients with narcolepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with narcolepsy often complain about attention deficits in everyday situations. In comparison with these subjective complaints, deficits in objective testing are subtler. The present study assessed the relationships between subjective complaints, objectively measured cognitive performance, disease-related variables, and mood. PATIENTS/METHODS: A total of 51 patients with narcolepsy and 35 healthy controls responded to questionnaires regarding subjectively perceived attention deficits, sleepiness, anxiety and depression. Moreover, they performed an extensive neuropsychologi

Emotional intelligence in anorexia nervosa: is anxiety a missing piece of the puzzle?

Problematic emotional processing has been implicated in the genesis and maintenance of anorexia nervosa (AN). This study built on existing research and explored performance-based emotional intelligence (EI) in people with AN. The Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT) was administered to 32 women diagnosed with AN and 32 female healthy controls (HC). Compared to HC women, the AN group demonstrated significantly lower total EI scores and poorer ability to understand how emotions can progress and change over time. Despite scores within the broadly average range compared to pub

Smoking is associated with lower performance in WAIS-R Block Design scores in adults with ADHD.

Adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are predisposed to smoking, but the neuropsychological correlates of this association have not been elucidated so far. The present study evaluates possible associations between cognitive performance and smoking and other comorbidities in adults with ADHD. Two hundred and sixty-four (264) patients were evaluated in the adult ADHD outpatient clinic of the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre. The diagnoses were based on the DSM-IV criteria and interviews were performed with the Portuguese version of K-SADS-E for ADHD and oppositional-de

Psychometric properties and three proposed subscales of a self-report version of the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale translated into Hebrew.

We investigated the overall test-retest reliability and other psychometric properties of a self-report version of the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS) translated into Hebrew. We also evaluated the utility of three new subscales that were identified by nonparametric analysis (multidimensional scaling; MDS). Two hundred and seven patients who sought treatment for social anxiety or panic disorder were evaluated. All patients completed the self-administered version of the LSAS. A subsample completed the LSAS a second time prior to the beginning of treatment. The results indicate that the self

Prediction of Specific Anxiety Symptoms and Virtual Reality Sickness Using In Situ Autonomic Physiological Signals During Virtual Reality Treatment in Patients With Social Anxiety Disorder: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is the fear of social situations where a person anticipates being evaluated negatively. Changes in autonomic response patterns are related to the expression of anxiety symptoms. Virtual reality (VR) sickness can inhibit VR experiences. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to predict the severity of specific anxiety symptoms and VR sickness in patients with SAD, using machine learning based on in situ autonomic physiological signals (heart rate and galvanic skin response) during VR treatment sessions. METHODS: This study included 32 participants with SAD takin

Seizures in the elderly: impact on mental status, mood, and sleep.

Comorbidities of epilepsy have not been well explored in the elderly. Herein, we examined mental status, mood, and sleep in elderly patients with epilepsy, compared with age- and gender-matched community controls without epilepsy from the Einstein Aging Study. Testing included a mental status test, the Blessed Information Memory and Concentration (BIMC) test; Prime-MD Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) Depression and Anxiety Modules; and Medical Outcomes Study Sleep Scale. Persons with epilepsy (n=31) had higher mean BIMC scores than controls (n=31, BIMC 6.3 vs.1.2, P<0.0001). Mean PHQ Depress
