Sensory disturbance along the inferior alveolar nerve as a first clinical sign of multiple florid cemento-osseous dysplasia of the mandible-A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (FCOD) is a rare, benign, slow growing, multifocal fibro-osseous tumour originating from the periodontal ligament. The lesion is characterised by regular bone-structure replacement with fibrous tissue and dysplastic bone. The initial characteristics of FCOD, depending on localisation, resemble those of periapical lesions of inflammatory origin, potentially leading to misdiagnosis. In the absence of infection signs, the treatment of choice is conservative therapy with antibiotics and regular follow-up examinations. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report

Machine classification of dental images with visual search.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The authors performed this study to assess the performance of a computer-based classification system that uses gaze locations of observers to define the subspace for machine learning. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two dental radiographs were classified by an expert viewer into four categories of disease of the periapical region: no disease (normal tooth), mild disease (widened periodontal ligament space), moderate disease (destruction of the lamina dura), and severe disease (resorption of bone in the periapical area). There were eight images in each category. Six obs

Storage-phosphor computed radiography versus film radiography in the detection of pathologic periradicular bone loss in cadavers.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to compare D-speed film, E-speed film, and the Soredex Digora system with respect to the detection of periradicular pathosis. STUDY DESIGN: Radiographic images of 100 cadaver jaws were made with E-speed film, D-speed film, and the Soredex Digora. Each set of 100 images was interpreted by four observers, with 30 days separating each of three viewing sessions from the next. The presence or absence of pathologic (inflammatory) periradicular bone resorption was determined by histologic examination of the samples. The observer performance was compared with

A Correlation between Clinical Classification of Dental Pulp and Periapical Diseases with its Patho Physiology and Pain Pathway.

BACKGROUND: Dental pain due to pulpal involvement is difficult to diagnose due to the apparent inaccessibility of pulp to the clinical tests, indistinct symptoms, and referred toothache originating from the periodontal tissues. Though we have various clinical classification systems to categorize pulpal diseases, we are yet biased about the exact pathophysiology and pain pathway associated with it. Dental pulp has a complex physiology, and so is its pathophysiology. AIMS & OBJECTIVES: To concisely reviews the basic understanding of the pathophysiology of pulp, pain pathway, and its correlation

Successful treatment of periprosthetic joint infection caused by Granulicatella para-adiacens with prosthesis retention: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Granulicatella and Abiotrophia spp. are difficult to detect due to their complex nutritional requirements. Infections with these organisms are associated with high treatment failure rates. We report the first implant-associated infection caused by Granulicatella para-adiacens, which was cured with anti-microbial treatment consisting of anti-biofilm-active rifampin and debridement, exchange of mobile parts and retention of the prosthesis. CASE PRESENTATION: Patient with a history of left hip arthroplasty presented with acute onset of fever, pain and limited range of motion of the l

Current practice in endodontics: 2. Diagnosis and treatment planning.

The aim of this series of six articles is to improve the quality of endodontic treatment in general dental practice by considering what is currently being taught in dental schools. This second article considers the accurate diagnosis of endodontic lesions, which frequently present as emergencies requiring prompt, rapid and efficient attention. The paper then presents the treatment normally indicated once a correct and accurate diagnosis has been made.

Genetic insights into the relationship between anti-inflammatory drug target genes and oral diseases.

BACKGROUND: Glucocorticoids and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are cornerstones in the management of oral inflammatory pathologies. However, their precise causal effects on a range of oral diseases and the underlying genetic mechanisms remain poorly understood. Concurrently, emerging evidence on the gut-brain axis suggests a potential connection between intestinal inflammation and the pathogenesis of oral diseases. Although preliminary data point to the gut microbiota's role in disease progression, the specific causal pathways and genetic underpinnings remain largely unexplored.

Regenerative endodontic treatment and traumatic dental injuries.

Pulp necrosis is the most common complication following dental trauma and is often associated with apical periodontitis. The management of these teeth is challenging in terms of large root canals, open apices, thin dentinal walls, and short roots. Over decades the conventional treatment for these teeth was calcium hydroxide apexification, a time-consuming procedure despite high success rates. Subsequently after the introduction of mineral trioxide aggregate and hydraulic calcium silicate materials single visit apical plug procedures became increasingly practiced with comparable success rates t

Synthetic high-density lipoprotein (sHDL): a bioinspired nanotherapeutics for managing periapical bone inflammation.

Apical periodontitis (AP) is a dental-driven condition caused by pathogens and their toxins infecting the inner portion of the tooth (i.e., dental pulp tissue), resulting in inflammation and apical bone resorption affecting 50% of the worldwide population, with more than 15 million root canals performed annually in the United States. Current treatment involves cleaning and decontaminating the infected tissue with chemo-mechanical approaches and materials introduced years ago, such as calcium hydroxide, zinc oxide-eugenol, or even formalin products. Here, we present, for the first time, a nanot
