Hematologic parameters and iron state in the perinatal period.

In 51 unselected mothers, we studied, before and after delivery: serum ferritin, serum iron, serum transferrin, the erythrocyte count, the hemoglobin concentration, the hematocrit, and the derived red cell indices. Eighteen percent of women showed a hemoglobin value below 120 g/l. The mean transferrin saturation (22 +- 7.6% (SD) and the mean serum ferritin (34 +/- 18 micrograms/l (SD) indicated a probable decrease of iron stores at term. Only three patients seemed to show hematological evidence of latent iron deficiency, and none had manifest iron deficiency. A decrease of iron stores is consi

Spontaneous periodic hypothermia with lipoma of the corpus callosum.

A patient with spontaneous periodic hypothermia who had both a lipoma and agenesis of the corpus callosum is described. Spontaneous periodic hypothermia associated with corpus callosum abnormalities is a distinct entity and although the mechanism underlying the hypothermic episodes is unexplained, the term "diencephalic autonomic epilepsy" does not seem appropriate.

Periods of development of the normal human chamber angle.

Stages of fetal and postnatal development of the normal human chamber angle are reevaluated. Major growth phases can be detected: trabecular anlage formation (around the 15th week), differentiation into definitive structures (around the 24th week), specialisation of the definitive structures (around the 28th week), achievement of final components (birth) and final moulding of the chamber angle and the maturation of its cellular and extracellular constituents (1-8 years). A cleavage or gradual atrophy of chamber angle tissues could not be detected during any of the above phases, nor was a membr

Hypokalemic periodic paralysis associated with multiple sclerosis.

A case is reported of a 46-year old male who has been suffering from recurrent episodes of quadriplegia, characteristic of hypokalemic periodic paralysis, for 28 years. During this period he has developed typical signs and symptoms of multiple sclerosis. The association of hypokalemic periodic paralysis and multiple sclerosis is extremely unusual.

Progressive supranuclear palsy and hyperkalemic periodic paralysis.

A patient with hyperkalemic periodic paralysis experienced the gradual onset of additional and unexpected neurologic abnormalities in middle age, suggestive of progressive supranuclear palsy. Although the concurrence of these findings may be coincidental, these features may evade recognition in other patients by being misattributed to chronic myopathy or depression.

Non-respiratory functions of the lung in the perinatal period.

Beginning with the hypothesis that interference with the metabolic function of the lung could lead to perinatal respiratory disease, we explored the role of one of these functions, angiotensin-converting enzyme activity, in the control of the fetal and newborn circulation. Converting enzyme regulates the concentration of two peptides, bradykinin and angiotensin, important in adapting the fetus to extrauterine life. Initial studies demonstrated decreasing amounts of converting enzyme activity and a parallel decrease in vascular surface with decreasing gestational age. Because we had demonstrate

[Correction of deformities in congenital torticollis in the postoperative period].

Congenital spastic torticollis was surgically treated in 98 children. An original orthopedic device was used in 31 children. A comparative analysis of the results depending on the kind of immobilization and means of correction in 79 children showed the device to provide good results and to shorten the time of the treatment.

Regulation of plasma potassium in hyperkalemic periodic paralysis.

Hyperkalemic periodic paralysis is frequently considered a disorder in which episodes of weakness and an attendant rise in plasma potassium interrupt a baseline of normal strength and potassium. We studied venous potassium throughout a 36-hour period in two patients with hyperkalemic periodic paralysis and in nine normals under rigidly controlled conditions. At no time did the patients with periodic paralysis have an attack of weakness, but their mean potassium concentrations were above the normal range for 33 to 36 hours. In hyperkalemic periodic paralysis, the postprandial change in potassiu

[Hydrothorax during the neonatal period (author's transl)].

The congenital hydrothorax is a rare cause of the RDS in the newborn. Our observations on three patients with bilateral pleural effusions and 44 cases from the literature will be discussed; we emphasize the importance of this serious disease in the newborn period. The pathogenesis is largely unknown, however, its possible etiology like birth trauma or dysplasia of the lymphatic system are discussed. It should be pointed out that this condition can be rapidly recognized by radiographic examination and successfully treated. The reported survival rate is 29 out of 44 (66%).

[Effect of certain procedures on the puerperal period in cows].

The course and duration of the post delivery period, uterine involution, independence and service period, number of fertilizations and the percentage of complications were studied in 82 cows aged 3 to 7 years, reared by two differing technoligies. One group (experimental) of 53 cows was reared together with the calves until the 6th day post delivery, while the other group (control) of 29 cows was reared without the calves. Both groups were subdivided into groups with and without complications; It was established that the proposed technology of cow rearing with the calves sucking until the 6th

Diagnostic value of the muscle biopsy in the neonatal period.

Muscle biopsy specimens of 20 full-term neonates (13 surgical and seven necropsy specimens) with clinical evidence of neuromuscular disease were studied to determine the diagnostic usefulness of this procedure in the newborn. Characteristic pathologic alterations were identified in specific diseases. Some findings were similar to those seen later in life, but others differed from those expected in the same diseases at older ages. Persistence of fetal muscle cells was a characteristic common to several congenital myopathies and neuropathies. Lymphocytic infiltrates, muscle fiber necrosis, and a

Primary aldosteronism aggravated during peripartum period.

Two cases are reported of a 30-year-old and of a 28-year-old Japanese women with primary aldosteronism in whom metabolic and blood pressure abnormalities were aggravated during peripartum period. The characteristic findings in 2 present cases are as follows; 1) lower blood pressure during pregnancy, 2) elevated blood pressure during peripartum period, and 3) after parturition, serum potassium decreased, and the blood pressure elevated. The reason why the hypertension and hypokalemia associated with primary aldosteronism were ameliorated during pregnancy was thought to be due to the increased s
