This paper compares older adults in their sixties, eighties, and 100s on personality, experience of life events, and coping. A secondary goal was to test a structural model of adaptation. Participants (165) filled out a personality inventory, life-event lists, and coping and mental health measures. Results revealed differences in personality: centenarians scored higher on dominance, suspiciousness, and imagination. This study investigated the personality disorders of 21 recent-onset Bipolar Disorder patients using the revised Million Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI-II; Millon, 1987). We tested whether personality disturbance and stressful life events can help explain why some patients with Anorexia nervosa or Bulimia nervosa remain ill for several years. In a follow-up of 37 patients, both factors were found to be significantly associated with a poorer outcome after a year, and preliminary data suggest this trend continues after two years. Personality alterations were investigated in patients with dementia of the Alzheimer type (DAT), multi-infarct dementia (MID), and normal control subjects, using a standardized informant-rated personality inventory. Eleven "pure" borderlines, ten borderlines with depression, 16 "pure" depressives, and 31 normal subjects were compared on a number of standardized inventories of anxiety. While patient groups experienced more anxiety of all types than did normals, borderlines did not emerge as more anxious than other patient groups. Qualitative differences in the anxiety experienced by borderlines and nonborderlines are discussed.

This double-blind family study was an investigation of the familiality of DSM-III avoidant, dependent, borderline, anxious cluster, and flamboyant cluster personality disorders (PDs) using a standardized DSM-III axis II measure. We have studied 204 healthy male subjects ranging in age from 20 to 59 years. They were divided into four 10-year age groups. Each age group was further divided into 2 subgroups with high and low Panic-Fear scores. The ventilatory activities of all the groups were compared. Although the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder has reasonable interrater and test-retest reliability, its discriminative validity is poor. The authors review studies indicating that the patient group subsumed by the borderline category actually includes those with various affective, organic, and schizotypal disorders. They speculate that borderline personality disorder represents a broad range of affective disorders resulting in part from childhood object loss, which may impair the reinforcement mechanisms necessary for the development of competent object relations.

In a series of 20 patients with multiple personality, there was a 75% incidence of sexual abuse and a 55% incidence of physical abuse during childhood.
