The human rights of intersex people: addressing harmful practices and rhetoric of change.

Intersex people and bodies have been considered incapable of integration into society. Medical interventions on often healthy bodies remain the norm, addressing perceived familial and cultural demands, despite concerns about necessity, outcomes, conduct and consent. A global and decentralised intersex movement pursues simple core goals: the rights to bodily autonomy and self-determination, and an end to stigmatisation. The international human rights system is responding with an array of new policy statements from human rights institutions and a handful of national governments recognising the r

Adolescent anger.

Adolescent hostility, resentment, blame, and reproach are dynamically determined and serve important defensive, alloplastic, and restitutional aims. The author examines how these negative affects, the accompanying victim role, and oppositional defiance enable angry adolescents to defend against depression and loss, to demand nurturance from others, to protect their precarious inner autonomy, and to undo their humiliation and shame by vengeance and reversal. The author suggests that adolescent anger arises from an underlying wish to coerce objects into providing all-giving restitution for losse

Measuring physical aggressiveness in heterosexual, homosexual, and transsexual males.

The purpose of this study was the development of a self-report measure of boyhood aggressiveness for use with adult males. Aggressiveness was defined as a generalized disposition to engage in physically combative or competitive interactions with male peers. This attribute is of sexological interest because of the reported difference in physical aggressiveness between heterosexual and homosexual boys. A physical aggressiveness scale (PAS) was constructed from items regarding boyhood athletic interest and proficiency, as well as fighting with and feelings of unease around male peers. The PAS and

Identity processes and coping strategies in college students: short-term longitudinal dynamics and the role of personality.

Coping strategies and identity processes are hypothesized to influence one another over time. This three-wave longitudinal study (N = 458; 84.9% women) examined, for the first time, how and to what extent identity processes (i.e., commitment making, identification with commitment, exploration in breadth, exploration in depth, and ruminative exploration) and coping strategies (i.e., problem solving, social support seeking, and avoidance) predicted one another over time. Cross-lagged analyses indicated that processes of identity exploration seemed especially to be intertwined with different copi

The elaboration of personal construct psychology.

More than half a century has passed since the publication of George Kelly's (1955/1991) The Psychology of Personal Constructs. This review considers the elaboration of personal construct psychology (PCP) during this time, both by Kelly and by others who developed his ideas. Advances to the theory have principally concerned implicative relationships between constructs, construing of the self, social relationships, emotions, links with other approaches, and supporting research. With regard to methods of assessment of construing, major developments have occurred in both repertory grid and nongrid

The assessment of schizotypal features over two points in time.

The expression of schizotypal personality traits was assessed in mid-adolescence and again in young adulthood for three groups of offspring defined by the psychiatric diagnosis of their parents. Parental diagnoses included schizophrenic disorder (47 offspring), affective disorder (39 offspring), and 'no psychiatric disorder', or normal controls (82 offspring). Initially, schizotypal traits were assessed from video-taped semi-structured psychiatric interviews, subsequently rated by trained psychiatrists blind to the parental psychiatric status of the subjects, and/or direct clinical interviews

Sensitivity, Specificity and Interrater Reliability of a Clinical Staging Model for Personality Disorders in Older Adults: A Case Series Study.

A recent Delphi study found expert-consensus that clinical staging (CS) could provide a valid framework in the assessment of personality disorders (PDs) in older adults (Conjaerts et al., 2025). The categorical models used currently to assess PDs are poorly suited for treatment selection, in older adults even more so as age-specific factors were not considered in the development. The aim of this study was to investigate the interrater reliability, sensitivity and specificity of the recently proposed CS model, using the level of personality functioning and the lifetime course of personality pat

A quantitative investigation of inequalities in out-of-area admissions in child and adolescent mental health services.

BackgroundUnderstanding inequalities in mental health care is vital for the development of more equitable services. This study investigates inequalities in out-of-area admissions to general adolescent units, a controversial but necessary part of Child and Adolescent Mental Health care in England.MethodsAnonymised data on 279 out-of-area (at-distance or out-of-region) admissions to general adolescent units in England between February 2021-2022 were analysed for an association between demographics (age, sex, ethnicity) or clinical characteristics (diagnosis and risks) and admission characteristi

Extraversion Is Associated With Lower Brain Beta-Amyloid Deposition in Cognitively Normal Older Adults.

Emerging evidence suggests that some personality traits may link to the vulnerability to or protection for Alzheimer's disease (AD). A causal mechanism underlying this relationship, however, remains largely unknown. Using 18F-Florbetaben positron emission tomography (PET) binding to beta-amyloid (Aβ) plaques, a pathological feature of AD, and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we investigated pathological and functional correlates of extraversion and neuroticism in a group of healthy young and older subjects. We quantified the level of brain Aβ deposition in older individuals. Brain

A person-centered approach to resilience and vulnerability in emerging adulthood: Predictions from parenting and personality in adolescence.

In this person-centered study, we identified different profiles of resilience and vulnerability in emerging adulthood in response to previously experienced stressful life events. Additionally, we examined whether mothers' and fathers' parenting and participants' personality traits in adolescence predicted these profiles. Data from the Flemish Study on Parenting, Personality, and Development (N = 346 families) were used. At T1 (2004; Mage = 11 years), T2 (2007), and T3 (2009), mothers and fathers reported on their parenting and their child's personality. At T4 (2018; Mage = 25 years), emerging

Childhood trauma determines different clinical and biological manifestations in patients with eating disorders.

PURPOSE: There is a significant relationship between childhood trauma and the development of an eating disorder in adolescence or adulthood, possibly influenced by circulating levels of inflammatory parameters. The main objective is to identify and describe a subgroup of patients with eating disorders and a history of trauma in childhood or adolescence with differential clinical features. METHODS: An observational study on a sample of 55 patients who met the diagnostic criteria for any DSM-5 eating disorder was carried out. Inflammatory parameters in white blood cells were examined. Patients

Reciprocal effects of personality and general distress: Neuroticism vulnerability is stronger than scarring.

Internalizing (anxiety and depressive) disorders, and the symptoms that comprise them, are known for being chronic and recurrent. Neuroticism, reflecting dispositional tendencies toward negative affect, is a personality trait that bears durable cross-sectional and prospective associations with internalizing symptoms. There are also indications that extraversion, consisting of tendencies such as the heightened experience of positive emotion, is associated with these symptoms. Some investigators have posited that the experience of internalizing symptoms leaves residual effects, or scars, on pers

Symptoms, course of Illness, and comorbidity as predictors of expressed emotion in bipolar disorder.

High levels of expressed emotions (EE) reflect the amount of criticism and/or over-involvement in families and has been linked to relapse risk in various psychiatric disorders including bipolar disorder (BD). Less clear is which factors contribute to the development and/or maintenance of EE. Therefore, we tested whether patient characteristics, specifically clinical features and personality disorder traits in BD predicted key aspects of EE as assessed by patients and their relatives. Patients with remitted BD and their relatives were asked to complete the Family Attitude Scale (FAS) and the Pe

Child maltreatment and risk behaviors: The roles of callous/unemotional traits and conscientiousness.

Child maltreatment poses significant risk to the development of callous/unemotional traits as well as risk behaviors such as engaging in violence, having sex with strangers, and binge drinking. In the current study, the indirect pathway from child maltreatment to risk behaviors was examined via callous/unemotional traits; whereas the conscientious personality trait was tested as a moderator of this indirect pathway. Young adults and parents (N=361; Mage=19.14, SD=1.44) completed questionnaires on child maltreatment histories, callousness/unemotional traits, personality characteristics, and ris

Dissociative depression among women in the community.

This study screened the prevalence and correlates of dissociative disorders among depressive women in the general population. The Dissociative Disorders Interview Schedule and the posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and borderline personality disorder sections of the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV were administered to 628 women in 500 homes. The prevalence of current major depressive episode was 10.0%. Of the women, 26 (40.6%) had the lifetime diagnosis of a DSM-IV, dissociative disorder, yielding a prevalence of 4.1% for dissociative depression. This group was younger (mean age = 3
