Exploring variation in surgical practice: does surgeon personality influence anastomotic decision-making?

BACKGROUND: Decision-making under uncertainty may be influenced by an individual's personality. The primary aim was to explore associations between surgeon personality traits and colorectal anastomotic decision-making. METHODS: Colorectal surgeons worldwide participated in a two-part online survey. Part 1 evaluated surgeon characteristics using the Big Five Inventory to measure personality (five domains: agreeableness; conscientiousness; extraversion; emotional stability; openness) in response to scenarios presented in Part 2 involving anastomotic decisions (i.e. rejoining the bowel with/with

Personality features of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The authors evaluated personality dysfunction in 23 patients with primary obsessive-compulsive disorder and an age- and sex-matched group of patients with major depressive disorder. There were no significant differences between the two patient groups with respect to mean personality trait scores or the frequency or type of personality disorder diagnosis. A mixed personality disorder with avoidant, dependent, and passive-aggressive features was most commonly observed in the obsessive-compulsive group. There was a very low frequency of schizoid or compulsive personality disorder.

Adherence To Prophylactic Swallowing Exercises in Head and Neck Cancer Patients (PRESTO-TRIAL) - the ROLE of Personality Characteristics.

Prophylactic swallowing exercises (PSE) can mitigate (the consequences of) radiation associated dysphagia (RAD) in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients, provided patients adhere to a high-intensity program. However, patient adherence, a multifactorial concept influenced by several confounders, has been found to vary considerably between studies and individuals. PSE-related adherence confounders such as gender, smoking at baseline, baseline depression and high baseline fatigue levels have already been postulated. The influence of personality on adherence to PSE has not yet been investigated. The

The impact of childhood trauma on borderline personality organization in a community sample of Greek emerging adults.

There is limited research on the role of childhood trauma in personality pathology according to Kernberg's psychodynamic model of internalized object relations. Because childhood trauma reflects the disruptions of these relations, it is expected to predict borderline personality organization, especially at the threshold of adulthood. Therefore, the main aim of this retrospective study was to examine the impact of childhood trauma on borderline personality organization in a community sample of emerging adults. Participants were 543 Greek individuals aged 18-29 (M = 21.45; 58.6 % females; 85.1 %

The influence of a therapeutic community on psychiatric disorder.

Forty-eight residents of a therapeutic community took part in a prospective study aimed at assessing overall outcome and which components of the program were most helpful. All subjects had a DSM-III-R axis II diagnosis, usually borderline personality disorder (N = 34). As well, subjects had a mean of 1.3 axis I diagnoses, underlining the severity of their psychiatric disorders. Significant symptom reduction on the Brief Symptom Inventory occurred at discharge after a mean stay of 64 days, with further significant falls at three month follow-up. These changes were paralleled in the Hostility an

Characteristics of the frequent nightmare sufferer.

Previous research has found that persons who experience frequent nightmares score highly on scales that measure psychotic symptomatology. Neurotic symptoms have also been implicated as correlates of nightmare frequency. In this study, 30 adult lifelong nightmare sufferers were compared with 30 control subjects, matched for age, sex, and socioeconomic status. Subjects were asked to record all dreams for 1 month and to complete the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ). Nightmare subjects scored significantly higher on the EPQ Neurotic…

Development and psychometric evaluation of the Personality Disorder Severity ICD-11 (PDS-ICD-11) Clinician-Rating Form.

No clinician-rating tool has formally been developed to assess the ICD-11 model of personality disorder (PD) severity. We therefore developed and evaluated the 14-item personality disorder Severity ICD-11 (PDS-ICD-11) Clinician-Rating Form. A combined sample of 195 patients was rated by mental health professionals or clinical research assistants in New Zealand using the PDS-ICD-11 Clinician-Rating Form. Responses were subjected to item-response theory analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. In a subsample, we examined interrater reliability and convergence with self- and informant-reported

A DSM-5 AMPD and ICD-11 compatible measure for an early identification of personality disorders in adolescence-LoPF-Q 12-18 latent structure and short form.

The LoPF-Q 12-18 (Levels of Personality Functioning Questionnaire) was designed for clinical use and to promote early detection of personality disorder (PD). It is a self-report measure with 97 items to assess personality functioning in adolescents from 12 years up. It operationalizes the dimensional concept of personality disorder (PD) severity used in the Alternative DSM-5 Model for Personality Disorders and the ICD-11. In this study, we investigated the factorial structure of the LoPF-Q 12-18. Additionally, a short version was developed to meet the need of efficient screening for PD in clin

Personality Prototypes in People with Type 1 Diabetes and Their Relationship with Adherence.

Type 1 diabetes (Dm1) is a chronic endocrine and metabolic disease that affects the whole person and requires active, decisive treatment. However, personality traits may influence a patient's adherence to treatment guidelines. The objective of this work is firstly to identify the 3 Asendorpf personality prototypes (resilient, undercontrolled and overcontrolled) in a sample of Dm1 individuals and determine whether there are any differences in comparison with a control sample; and, secondly, to study their association with adherence to self-care guidelines using both physiological indicators (Hb

Deconstructing dependency in a five-factor world: a meta-analytic review.

Meta-analysis of studies assessing the relation between interpersonal dependency test scores and five-factor model (FFM) domain scores revealed that dependency scores are positively correlated with FFM Neuroticism and Agreeableness scores and negatively correlated with FFM Extraversion, Openness, and Conscientiousness scores. The magnitudes of these correlations were all in the small-to-moderate range, and comparable score intercorrelations were obtained when participants' dependency levels were assessed by means of a trait dependency questionnaire, dependent personality disorder questionnaire

Personality traits predict treatment outcome of an antidepressant in untreated adolescents with depression: An 8-week, open-label, flexible-dose study.

BACKGROUND: Antidepressant response in adults with major depressive disorder (MDD) is probably influenced by personality dimensions. However, personality dimensions in depression and their association with antidepressant treatment in adolescents are relatively unknown. We sought to investigate whether personality traits (PTs) can influence antidepressant treatment response in adolescents with depression. METHODS: Eighty-two adolescents with MDD who had completed the 8 weeks of treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) were enrolled. The Revised NEO Five-Factor Inventory (N
