Available information regarding the clinical features of cannabis-induced psychoses among schizophrenia patients is rather odd and even discrepant. For thorough investigation psychopathology due to marijuana intoxication, we examine two groups of schizophrenia patients. I group--14 patients, who had long history of cannabis use before developing schizophrenia, and II group--schizophrenic patients, who already had schizophrenia and later became marijuana users. Clinical study allowed us to determine the general psychopathological symptoms due to acute intoxication on the one hand, reflecting du

Minimal hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a major cause of premature retirement in cirrhotics. The decision on the earning capability of a patient is usually based on clinical judgement, considering the patient's complaints and clinical findings such as nervousness and depression. In a comprehensive psychometric study we were able to show that cirrhotic patients, who are considered to be unable to earn their living, differ significantly from those who are working, in tests evaluating psychomotor function and in personality and subjective well-being scores representing nervousness, aggressiveness,

Using four different psychological tests, namely Spielberger's rating scale [The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI)], Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), Maudsley Personality Inventory (MPI) and Baum test, we investigated the perioperative psychological status of patients undergoing radical mastectomy for breast cancer and compared data with those of patients undergoing total hysterectomy for uterine myoma. Parameters reflecting the psychological status of hysterectomy patients disclosed lower postoperative anxiety, and slight nervousness and persistent depression perioperatively. In contras

Lyme encephalopathy, primarily manifested by disturbances in memory, mood, and sleep, is a common late neurologic manifestation of Lyme disease. We compared 20 patients with Lyme encephalopathy with 11 fibromyalgia patients and 11 nonpsychotically depressed patients using the California Verbal Learning Test, Wechsler Memory Scale, Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test, Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), and Beck Depression Inventory. Compared with patients with fibromyalgia or depression, the Lyme encephalopathy group showed mild, but statistically significant, memory deficits on

In a study on 21 patients, who had been treated at the Erlangen Dept. Dermat. for delusion of parasitosis during the last 17 years, we compiled catamnestic data, evaluated the personality profiles, and focussed upon the interrelations between the clinical symptoms, the outcome of various psychological tests, and the course of the disease. Our sociographic results agreed well with those of earlier studies (i.e. social isolation, conflicts in or loss of partnership and sexuality). Nearly half of the patients complained about depressive moods which, however, could not be psychometrically proved.

Motion sickness (MS)has been inconclusively associated with personality and physical vestibular functioning in both males and females. The present work consisted of six tests: test of field dependency; pure balance test; motion sickness questionnaire; body steadiness test; primary suggestibility test; resistance to disturbance test. In addition the EPI was completed by a proportion of subjects. Male and female data for the 15 male and 15 female subjects in an age range 20 to 30 years, obtained from within Bedford College, University of London, were factor analysed separately. The results show

Patients with Buerger's disease (a circulatory illness) were studied to evaluate indirect self-destructive behavior (ISDB), evidence by neglect in following medical regimen, disregard of suggestions for environmental imporvements (avoidance of undue exposure to cold) and refusal to abstain from smoking. Personality characteristics and behavioral phenomena associated with ISDB were obtained by comparison of the files of 26 uncooperative patients with 26 matched cooperative controls with Buerger's disease and with 25 Buerger's disease patients representing a unselected annual population in a Vet

BACKGROUND: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) are psychiatric conditions commonly associated with impulsivity and substance use. Both disorders are linked to substance use (SU), which includes patterns of consumption of substances such as alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs.
OBJECTIVE: The primary objective is to examine the association between SU and the presence of ADHD and BPD traits among undergraduate students in Eastern Odisha. Additionally, this study aims to estimate the prevalence of ADHD, BPD, SU, and impulsivity within this po

UNLABELLED: The Assessment of Identity Development in Adolescence (AIDA) is a self-report instrument to detect pathological development of Identity. In Panamá, psychometric instruments for assessment of psychopathology in adolescence are lacking. Our aim was to develop a valid and reliable version of the AIDA Inventory for Panamanian Population. AIDA was adapted to Spanish considering cultural aspects of Panamanian population. Two pilot tests were performed prior to main test to assess item-total correlation at subscale, primary scale and total scale levels and internal consistency at subscale

Traits of optimism and cynical hostility are features of personality that could influence the risk of falls and fractures by influencing risk-taking behaviors, health behaviors, or inflammation. To test the hypothesis that personality influences falls and fracture risk, we studied 87,342 women enrolled in WHI-OS. Optimism was assessed by the Life Orientation Test-Revised and cynical hostility, the cynicism subscale of the Cook-Medley questionnaire. Higher scores indicate greater optimism and hostility. Optimism and hostility were correlated at r = -0. 31, p < 0.001. Annual self-report of falli

BACKGROUND: Previous studies demonstrating an association between alexithymia and depression have led to the proposal that alexithymia may be a state-dependent phenomenon rather than a stable and enduring personality trait. Several longitudinal studies have provided support for a trait view of alexithymia, but most of these studies evaluated absolute stability only (i.e., the extent to which alexithymia scores change over time) and did not examine the relative stability of alexithymia (i.e., the extent to which relative differences among individuals remain the same over time) in the context of

A case report shows the long and stony path of a couple who had to go through eight attempts at IVF in 4 years until the desired child was achieved. The psychosomatic implications of the various 'failures' of treatment become clearer when compared with the results of a psycho-endocrinological questionnaire completed by 551 patients and 115 controls since 1982. This questionnaire contains among others the Giessen personality test for the image of self, mother and father, a somatic complaints score to evaluate the severity of autonomic disorders, items for the presence and severity of possible g

Consumers tend to think of personal lubricants as personal care products or cosmetics that are not tested using animals, but the regulatory classification and hence the testing requirements for these products vary by country. For example, in the United States, regulations and guidance classify personal lubricants as medical devices, for which manufacturers must perform a rabbit vaginal irritation (RVI) test as part of a typical safety assessment submitted to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This publication discusses replacing the RVI with an in vitro reconstructed human vaginal epithel

Mobility limitations are common in persons with Intellectual Disabilities (ID). Differences in balance and gait capacities between persons with ID and controls have mainly been demonstrated by instrumented assessments (e.g. posturography and gait analysis), which require sophisticated and expensive equipment such as force plates or a 3D motion analysis system. Most physicians and allied healthcare professionals working with persons with ID do not have such equipment at their disposal, so they must rely on clinical tests to determine whether balance and gait are affected. The aim of this study

Theorists speculate that dependent personality disorder (DPD) and histrionic personality disorder (HPD) are both associated with high levels of implicit (i.e., unconscious) dependency needs but speculate that only DPD is associated with high levels of self-attributed (i.e., conscious) dependency needs. To test this hypothesis, 444 undergraduates (236 women and 208 men) completed the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-Revised (PDQ-R), along with widely used measures of implicit dependency needs (the Rorschach Oral Dependency Scale; ROD), and self-attributed dependency needs (the Interpersonal

BACKGROUND: The hypothesis that Asperger's syndrome (AS) may go unrecognised in forensic populations was examined by ascertaining the prevalence in Broadmoor Special Hospital.
METHOD: The entire male patient population was screened by examination of case notes. Identified cases were subject to the next stage of the study, which involved observation and interviewing of patients, and a semi-structured interview of key staff.
RESULTS: A prevalence of 1.5% (0.6% to 3.3%, 95% CI) was found. The addition of equivocal cases increased the prevalence to 2.3%.
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of AS in Broa
