Assumptions in borderline personality disorder: specificity, stability and relationship with etiological factors.

The specificity and stability of a set of assumptions hypothesized to be characteristic of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) was investigated. BPD patients (n = 16) were compared to cluster-C personality disorder patients (n = 12) and to normal controls (n = 15). All subjects were female and diagnosed with SCID-I and -II. Subjects rated a short version of the Personality Disorder Beliefs Questionnaire (PDBQ), with six sets of 20 assumptions each, hypothesized to be characteristic of avoidant, dependent, obsessive-compulsive, paranoid, histrionic and borderline personality disorder. The BPD

Course and Prediction of Dissociation in Patients with Borderline Personality Disorder and Personality-Disordered Comparison Subjects: A 24-Year Follow-Up Study.

The first purpose of this study was to determine the course of dissociation among patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and personality-disordered comparison subjects (OPD) over 24 years of prospective follow-up. The second purpose was to determine clinically meaningful predictors of dissociation among patients with BPD. The Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES) was administered to 290 patients with BPD and 72 personality-disordered comparison subjects at baseline, and then once every two years over 24 years of prospective follow-up. Baseline predictors were assessed with the Revi

[Comorbidity in patients with narcissistic personality disorder in comparison to patients with borderline personality disorder].

BACKGROUND: Patients with a narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) do not often consult a psychotherapist or psychiatrist because of their NPD, but rather, because of co-occurring psychiatric disorders, or higher general symptom stress. Until now there is no actual data about rates of co-occurrence disorders and general symptom stress. OBJECTIVE: Which axis I and axis II disorders occur typically in NPD in comparison to patients with a borderline personality disorder (BPD)? How are general symptom stress and depressive symptoms related? METHODS: Prevalence of co-occurring disorders (Structu

Personality differences between obsessive-compulsive disorder subtypes: washers versus checkers.

Personality differences between 'washer' and 'checker' subtypes of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) were explored. Fifty-one OCD patients were recruited from several outpatient clinics in Central Israel. OCD was diagnosed according to DSM-III-R using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R, and personality disorders were diagnosed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R Personality Disorders. Washers were much more likely to have personality disorders than checkers. Personality disorders were diagnosed in 12 of 13 washers vs. three of 11 checkers (chi 2 = 10.75, Fisher

Unraveling personality in mood disorders: the role of big five personality traits in Han Chinese women with bipolar and unipolar depression.

BACKGROUND: Personality traits are closely related to psychiatric disorders, but their role in distinguishing major depressive disorder (DD) from bipolar disorder (BD) remains unclear. The Big Five Inventory (BFI) is widely used to assess personality, yet findings on trait differences between BD and MDD and their relationship with clinical features are inconsistent. This study examines how personality traits vary across mood disorders and their associations with clinical features. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate how Big Five personality traits differ between major depressive disorde

Prevalence of major depression, simple phobia, and other psychiatric disorders in patients with long-standing type I diabetes mellitus.

To examine the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in patients with long-standing type I diabetes mellitus, we assessed a series of candidates for pancreas transplantation. Using the Diagnostic Interview Schedule, six-month and lifetime prevalences of psychiatric disorders were established for the candidates and their potential donors (first-degree relatives). Excluding tobacco use disorder and psychosexual dysfunction, 38 diabetic subjects (51%) received one or more psychiatric diagnoses. The lifetime prevalence of major depression was comparable for female (11 of 48 [22.9%]) and male (seven

Psychiatric disorders and aggression in the printed media: is there a link? A central European perspective.

BACKGROUND: A content analysis was used to describe the association between psychiatric disorders and aggression in the printed media in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. METHODS: Articles were chosen from the most widely read daily newspapers and magazines in both countries during five one-week periods in 2007. A coding manual was developed and a content analysis was performed. Aggressive behavior was assessed by two separate categories - the role of the mentally ill person in the violent act (perpetrator/victim) and the type of aggressive act (homicide, suicide). RESULTS: A total of 375 art
