Targeting the Purinergic Axis with Phenolic Compounds to Disrupt the Oxidative-Inflammatory Cycle in Thyroid Cancer.

Thyroid cancer (TC), the most prevalent endocrine neoplasia, has shown a progressive incidence, highlighting the need for new therapeutic approaches-especially for radioiodine-refractory cases, often associated with mutations in genes such as BRAF, RAS, and TP53. This review proposes a mechanistic model that highlights two interrelated characteristics of the tumor microenvironment (TME): redox imbalance and chronic inflammation, key elements in tumor progression and treatment resistance. Thus, natural phenolic compounds, such as curcumin, quercetin, resveratrol, and epigallocatechin gallate (E…

Valorization of Tomato Leaves: Optimization of Eco-Friendly Phenolic Extraction and Assessment of Biological Activities.

Tomato leaves, typically discarded during harvest, are a rich yet underutilized source of bioactive compounds. This study aimed to valorize tomato leaves by optimizing the extraction of their phenolic compounds using a water-based method and response surface methodology. The optimal conditions, notably heating a mixture of 1:50 solid-to-liquid ratio at 71 °C for 29 min, yielded the most total phenolic content and antioxidant activity. The biological activities of the lyophilized tomato leaf extract (TLE) were then assessed. TLE showed dose-dependent antimicrobial activity against Escherichia c…

Cytoplasmic sequestering of a fungal stress-activated MAPK in response to a host plant phenolic acid.

Fungal pathogens employ conserved signaling pathways to survive in the host. The stress-activated MAP kinase Hog1 of the maize pathogen Cochliobolus heterostrophus undergoes dephosphorylation upon exposure to ferulic acid, a phenolic compound abundant in the host plant. Unlike its nuclear localization during osmotic stress, Hog1 forms cytoplasmic foci in response to FA, indicating its sequestering to a compartment or condensate. FA prevents several characteristic responses of the Hog1 pathway to osmotic stress: hyperphosphorylation of Hog1, nuclear localization, and expression of a monosacchar…

Influence of Jackfruit Wood Barrels and Chips During Aging on the Quality and Phenolic Compounds of Cachaça.

The traditional aging of cachaça has been performed with different types of wood barrels. Although it is efficient for incorporating phenolics, volatiles, and color into the drink, it is time-consuming for the industry. Alternative aging processes, such as the use of wood chips, have been proposed, and they have the advantage of achieving aging in a shorter time and producing a quality and innovative drink. Therefore, the influence of jackfruit wood barrel and chips and micro-aeration was investigated during cachaça aging. For that, five treatments were used-stainless steel tank (control); sta…
