[Cutaneous elastopathy and vascular anomalies associated with neurological disorders. Apropos of 2 cases].

The two cases described exhibited elastopathy associated with arterial stenosis (case 1) or aneurysms (case 2). The first was clearly a case of elastic pseudo-xanthoma with characteristic cutaneous lesions associated with retinal angioid streaks and severe arterial lesions, notably stenosis of the vertebral arteries (especially the left) causing disorders in the mechanism of balance. There were, in addition, mild diabetes, hyperlipidaemia and abnormal cutaneous pigmentation. The second patient, an African, had been hospitalised for an optochiasmatic syndrome which further investigation, notabl

Ultrasonography of the Kidneys in Healthy and Diseased Camels (Camelus dromedarius).

This review article is written to describe the results of ultrasonography of the kidneys in healthy camels as well as camels with some renal disorders. In the dromedary camel, the physiology of the kidney is of interest in view of the specialization of the camel to hot dry deserts and to prolonged periods without water. It plays an important role in water conservation through the production of highly concentrated urine that may predispose animal to varieties of renal disorders. Examples of kidney affections in dromedary camels are renal capsular pigmentation, medullary hyperemia, subcapsular c

Dermatopathia pigmentosa reticularis.

Dermatopathia pigmentosa reticularis is a rare disorder that presents as reticulate pigmentation distributed widely all over the cutaneous surface. Only nine patients with this disease have been described previously. Our patient had no fingernail and toenail prints, a striking finding also noted in some, but not all, of the other nine patients. Our patient also had a history of a seizure disorder and had two cutaneous neurofibromas, unlike the other patients with this disorder. However, there were no other findings, such as Lisch nodules of the iris, to suggest a diagnosis of von Recklinghause

Clinicopathological correlation of acquired hypopigmentary disorders.

Acquired hypopigmentary disorders comprise a significant group of disorders that affect Indians and Asians. The pigment disturbance in darker skin individuals can be very distressing to the patient and the family. These disorders cover a wide array of pathologies including infections, autoimmune processes, lymphoproliferative disorders, and sclerosing diseases. Histological diagnosis is particularly important because treatments for these diseases are varied and specific. This review will focus on histopathological diagnosis based on clinicopathological correlation for commonly encountered diso

Updated review of genetic reticulate pigmentary disorders.

Reticulate pigmentary disorders are a group of disorders characterized by hyper- and/or hypopigmented macules with varying sizes and amounts of pigment. Some of the disorders are heritable, such as Dowling-Degos disease, dyschromatosis universalis hereditaria, dyschromatosis symmetrica hereditaria, reticulate acropigmentation of Kitamura and X-linked reticulate pigmentary disorder. Although each condition possesses unique phenotypic characteristics and the prognosis for each is somewhat different, there is a large degree of overlap between the disorders and therefore they are difficult to diff

High dietary arachidonic acid levels affect the process of eye migration and head shape in pseudoalbino Senegalese sole Solea senegalensis early juveniles.

The effect of high dietary levels of arachidonic acid (ARA) on the eye migration and cranial bone remodelling processes in Senegalese sole Solea senegalensis early juveniles (age: 50 days post hatch) was evaluated by means of geometric morphometric analysis and alizarin red staining of cranial skeletal elements. The incidence of normally pigmented fish fed the control diet was 99·1 ± 0·3% (mean ± s.e.), whereas it was only 18·7 ± 7·5% for those fed high levels of ARA (ARA-H). The frequency of cranial deformities was significantly higher in fish fed ARA-H (95·1 ± 1·5%) than in those fed the con

Dowling-Degos-Like Flexural Hyperpigmentation in a Two-Year-Old Saudi Girl.

Dowling-Degos disease (DDD) is a rare, autosomal dominant pigmentary disorder typically characterized by adult-onset reticulate hyperpigmentation in flexural areas. Early-onset cases are exceptionally rare. A two-year-old Saudi girl presented with a one-year history of progressive, asymptomatic, velvety hyperpigmented plaques involving the axillae, anogenital region, and face. Histopathological analysis showed epidermal acanthosis with elongated rete ridges and prominent basal hyperpigmentation, consistent with DDD. Immunohistochemistry (SOX10) confirmed increased melanocytes at the rete ridge

Case report: A rare case of hereditary hemochromatosis caused by a mutation in the HAMP gene in Fuyang, China.

Hemochromatosis, also known as siderosis, is a disease caused by excessive iron deposition in human organs and tissues, resulting from iron metabolism disorders. It is clinically characterized by skin pigmentation (bronze color), liver cirrhosis, diabetes, weakness, and fatigue. Additional symptoms may include arthritis, hypothyroidism, heart failure, and sexual hypofunction. Clinical manifestations can vary from person to person, with a few patients showing no clinical manifestations, which makes the diagnosis difficult for clinicians. In this case report, we described hereditary hemochromato

A Series of Benzylidenes Linked to Hydrazine-1-carbothioamide as Tyrosinase Inhibitors: Synthesis, Biological Evaluation and Structure-Activity Relationship.

Tyrosinase is a type 3 copper enzyme responsible for skin pigmentation disorders, skin cancer, and enzymatic browning of vegetables and fruits. In the present article, 12 small molecules of 2-benzylidenehydrazine-1-carbothioamide were designed, synthesized and evaluated for their anti-tyrosinase activities followed by molecular docking and pharmacophore-based screening. Among synthesized thiosemicarbazone derivatives, one compound, (2E)-2-[(4-nitrophenyl)methylidene]hydrazine-1-carbothioamide, is the strongest inhibitor of mushroom tyrosinase with IC50 of 0.05 μM which demonstrated a 128-fold …

Surgical suturing-induced melanocytic nevi. A new type of eruptive melanocytic nevi?

BACKGROUND: Nevogenesis is a complex process involving several pathogenetic mechanisms, including genetic factors, hormonal influences and UV-radiation. Trauma has been described as a triggering factor for an alternative pathway of nevogenesis. Eruptive melanocytic nevi (EMN), related either to immunosuppression or to blistering disorders, represent a special type of nevi probably induced by the disruption of the dermo-epidermal junction and consequent proliferation of quiescent pigment cells during re-epithelization. MAIN OBSERVATIONS: We report two patients with three melanocytic nevi that

Differential diagnosis of inflammatory processes of the face.

We have discussed some aspects of differential diagnosis of inflammatory processes of the facial skin. The disorders mentioned include: eczematous processes, rosacea-like dermatitis, steroid rosacea, acne, especially the diagnosis and therapy of cystic acne, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, viral infection (Heck's disease) and circumscribed scleroderma versus systemic sclerosis and hemiatrophy of the face. Our own findings reveal that the cytocinetics in the psoriatic lesion differ fundamentally from other epidermal inflammatory processes, especially as the DNS synthesis time is prolonged. And so

Idiopathic Parkinson's disease: a review of clinical types and pathology.

Parkinsonism occurs in a variety of disorders, involving the central nervous system. The basic pathology in this disorder is the destruction of the pigmented neuronal pathway of the brain stem. The major site of damage is the nigrostriatal pathway. There is associated cytoplasmic neuronal changes, the most specific is the formation of an intracytoplasmic inclusion body, the Lewy body. This varies from other forms of neurofibrillary degeneration. Other neuropathological changes which may be age related are also found. This paper is an overview of the idiopathic Parkinson's disease.

Hypopigmentary skin disorders: current treatment options and future directions.

Alterations of skin and hair pigmentation are important features that have warranted treatment from ancient history on up to modern time. In some cultures, even today patients with vitiligo are regarded as social outcasts and are affected considerably both emotionally and physically. This article presents current options and future directions for the treatment of hypopigmentary disorders. Whereas with congenital disorders, such as albinism and phenylketonuria, no causal therapy has been established up to now, several treatment options for acquired hypopigmentary disorders have been investigate

Hair Follicles as a Critical Model for Monitoring the Circadian Clock.

Clock (circadian) genes are heterogeneously expressed in hair follicles (HFs). The genes can be modulated by both the central circadian system and some extrinsic factors, such as light and thyroid hormones. These circadian genes participate in the regulation of several physiological processes of HFs, including hair growth and pigmentation. On the other hand, because peripheral circadian genes are synchronized with the central clock, HFs could provide a noninvasive and practical method for monitoring and evaluating multiple circadian-rhythm-related conditions and disorders among humans, includi

Chemical Composition and Tyrosinase Inhibitory Activities of Fatty Acids Obtained from Heterotrophic Microalgae, S. limacinum and C. cohnii.

Tyrosinase is the rate-limiting enzyme for melanin production in plant and mammalian cells. Upregulation of this enzyme results in hyperpigmentation disorders. In order to treat pigmentation problems, novel skin whitening compounds are extremely screened. It is found that fatty acids based on their saturation levels either increase or decrease tyrosinase enzyme activity. Thus, fatty acids and their compositions are promising candidates for the treatment of hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation disorders. Microalgae are rich in both saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, as well. In this study,…
