Being a rare inflammatory, hyperproliferative dermatosis, diagnosing pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) can be a challenge to many clinicians. Our case reports aim to demonstrate that PRP is frequently diagnosed and managed as atopic dermatitis (AD) and that distinguishing features on dermoscopy, and biopsy can help diagnose this rare disease. The study also aims to show that PRP can be successfully treated with Isotretinoin. Our case series aims to describe two cases of PRP, initially diagnosed as AD and managed with topical corticosteroids. Being the first case series in the literature to descri…

Pityriasis rubra pilaris is an inflammatory dermatologic disorder of unknown cause. We report a 67-year-old man with Pityriasis rubra pilaris might induced by COVID-19 vaccination. The patient developed the lesions after the first dose of vaccine and significantly aggravated after the second dose. He had poor effect and liver function impairment developed after acitretin used, but achieved satisfactory efficacy after replacement to ixekizumab, an interleukin-17A inhibitor.

Pityriasis rubra pilaris is a papulosquamous inflammatory dermatosis that can be associated with HIV, autoimmunity, infections, certain medications, and neoplasms. Paraneoplastic pityriasis rubra pilaris has previously been reported in association with solid organ malignancies and once with leukemia. Herein, we present an elderly man with paraneoplastic pityriasis rubra pilaris, heralding the diagnosis of low-grade papillary urothelial carcinoma. Our patient's pityriasis rubra pilaris resolved after surgical resection of the tumor.

BACKGROUND: Pityriasis rosea Gibert (PRG) has features similar to those of common infectious childhood diseases, suggesting a viral cause, but no agent has been identified to date. We describe 4 children with PRG and 2 with recurrent varicella who were studied using photochronography, virology and immunology.
METHODS: The 6 patients with skin rashes visited our pediatric clinic from April 2012 to May 2016. Photographs of their skin lesions were taken; blood, skin lesions, and/or nasal lavage samples were collected to detect varicella-zoster virus (VZV) DNA and antibodies; and skin tests were …

BACKGROUND: Pityriasis versicolor (PV) is the most common chronic superficial infection of the stratum corneum, reported in 40-60% of the tropical population. After the description of the new Malassezia species, only a few studies have been conducted from India.
AIMS: Molecular identification, quantification of Malassezia species implicated with PV and correlation to its clinical presentation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The subjects include 50 PV patients, who attended the dermatology outpatient department of our hospital and 50 healthy individuals. Same size area of the skin was sampled from le…

Pityriasis rosea (PR) is a common, acute, and self-limited inflammatory skin disease. The typical clinical presentation includes the appearance of a primary "herald" patch followed within days to weeks by the onset of secondary scaly skin eruptions distributed along the skin tension line in most cases. Although PR is a well-known and relatively common disease, its cause is still not completely understood. However, viral agents, autoimmunity, psychogenic status, and numerous drugs have been proposed as possible factors to PR. Bupropion is known to cause hypersensitivity reactions. We present a …

Imatinib mesylate (Gleevec™, STI571), a selective inhibitor of BCR-ABL, c-Kit, and platelet-derived factor receptor, has been used to treat chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and gastrointestinal stromal tumors. Although its use has been associated with various adverse cutaneous reactions, pityriasis rosea-like drug eruptions are rare. Here, we report a case of pityriasis rosea-like drug eruption that developed following the administration of imatinib mesylate to treat CML.

OBJECTIVE: Pityriasis alba (PA) is the most common cause of facial hypopigmentation presenting to the dermatologist. The objective of the current study was to study the effect of the 308-nm excimer laser in the treatment of PA.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve patients with 37 PA patches were enrolled in this study. The lesions were treated using the 308-nm excimer laser twice a week for 12 weeks. The hypopigmented areas were evaluated at baseline and at weeks 0, 3, 6, and 12 for scaling, hypopigmentation, and pruritus on a 4-point scale (0 = none to 3 = severe). All adverse effects were recorde…

Pityriasis versicolor (PV) is a disease with worldwide distribution. Twelve different species of Malassezia yeast have been described. The objective of this study was to determine which species of Malassezia are more prevalent in patients with pityriasis versicolor. Samples were collected by scraping the lesions of 87 patients with a clinical suspicion of pityriasis versicolor. The samples were then submitted to fungal microscopy and culture to identify the species. The species found were: Malassezia sympodialis (30%), Malassezia furfur (25.7%), Malassezia globosa (22.7%), Malassezia restricta…

BACKGROUND: Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is a rare papulosquamous dermatosis. We evaluated evaluate co-morbidities, complications, and outcome of treatment regimens.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study at an academic teaching hospital. We analyzed all patients with the definite diagnosis of PRP seen since 2001. Epidemiologic data, co-morbidities, response to and course during treatment were investigated.
RESULTS: We identified 10 PRP-patients (6 men, 4 women), mean age 56.4 years, with type I (n = 9) and type IV (n = 1). Three patients had internal co-morbidities (atrial fi…
