BACKGROUND: The ECAIL trial, launched in 2017, was designed to evaluate a multicomponent intervention for childhood obesity prevention among hard-to-reach families. At a maternity hospital in Lille, France, healthcare providers screened pregnant women experiencing social vulnerability, and dietitians delivered a home-based intervention until age 2. The COVID-19 pandemic led to a six-month suspension in 2020. This study compared eligibility and participation before the pandemic and after resumption, and examined how implementation and reach evolved across the pandemic and subsequent cost-of-liv

INTRODUCTION: Persons in socioeconomically disadvantaged situations are disproportionally exposed to obesogenic environments and often have fewer resources to counteract their influence, resulting in poorer dietary outcomes and lower levels of physical activity. This study aimed to map the complex systems within the municipal obesogenic environment driving unhealthy eating behaviors and insufficient walking among adults in socioeconomically disadvantaged situations in Flanders, and to identify potential actions for local policymakers.
METHODS: Participatory group model building (GMB), a quali

BACKGROUND: Men often experience challenges in seeking healthcare when they become ill or develop conditions requiring medical attention. They frequently seek care as a last resort and, in some cases, do not seek care at all, even when their health deteriorates.
AIM: This study aims to implement and evaluate strategies designed to promote men's health-seeking behaviour in selected rural areas of Limpopo Province.
METHODS: The Participatory Action Research approach will be employed to guide the implementation of the strategies. The stakeholder committee members will be purposively selected fr

Malaria in humans is largely caused by two divergent species of Plasmodium parasites, P. vivax and P. falciparum, both of which have driven the spread of protective alleles in human populations. Notably, an erythrocyte-specific Duffy null allele (FyES) confers resistance to P. vivax malaria and has been identified as a target of strong, recent positive selection in multiple African-admixed populations. Here, we evaluate evidence for selection via adaptive admixture in Oman, where, compared to neighboring countries, P. vivax has recently been less common. Genetic ancestry inference using whole-

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains the leading infectious cause of death globally, disproportionately affecting people living with HIV and those with drug-resistant TB. In Portugal, TB incidence and notification rates exceed the European average, with diagnostic delays affecting underserved populations.
RESEARCH QUESTION: This study investigated factors contributing to total diagnostic delay among people with TB in Portugal, particularly underserved groups, and identified strategies to reduce these delays.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A convergent-parallel mixed-methods approach was used. Qu

School food environments play an important role in shaping children's food-related decisions, including where and what foods to acquire and consume on a school day. In Ghana, evidence indicates that food environments in and around schools may limit healthy food acquisition and consumption behaviour. This study aimed to understand how children's experiences and perceptions of their school food environment influence food acquisition and consumption decisions. Data from 18 focus group discussions with children (n = 157; aged 10-17 years) attending Public Basic Schools in the Greater Accra Region

INTRODUCTION: According to the Global Adult Tobacco Survey-2, India, 7.5% of pregnant women are tobacco users with a high prevalence of smokeless tobacco use in rural India. Although pregnant women may receive advice to quit tobacco, lack of knowledge on providing cessation support among healthcare workers results in missed opportunities. Community Health Workers (CHWs) play a significant role in maternal and child health (MCH) programs. Thus, task-shifting for providing cessation support by CHWs was planned and the perceptions and attitudes of concerned stakeholders were explored.

Gambling is a popular activity among older adults. Despite this increase in popularity little research has examined gambling among this group. This is especially true for minority older adults, like Francophones in Ontario. The purpose of this study was to better understand gambling in a sample of older Francophones from North-Eastern Ontario, the first study to do so. A sample of 181 older (over 55 years) Francophones from Northeastern Ontario (M age = 68.7, SD 7.6) was recruited. This sample was compared to a sample of older adults with English as their native language that had been previous

Scheduled Tribes (STs) of India are characterized by distinct cultures and a close relationship with the land they inhabit. Tribal people make up to 5% of the world's population but 15% of such people are living in poverty. They face deprivations caused by social, economic, and political exclusion. In India displacement due to development projects is pushing the tribals out of their habitat dispossessing them of their traditional forest resources. Women and children in displacement suffer more than the male counterpart especially in the process of moving to a new setup. The objective of the au

Recent advances in high-throughput sequencing technologies provide opportunities to gain novel insights into the genetic basis of phenotypic trait variation. Yet to date, progress in our understanding of genotype-phenotype associations in nonmodel organisms in general and natural vertebrate populations in particular has been hampered by small sample sizes typically available for wildlife populations and a resulting lack of statistical power, as well as a limited ability to control for false-positive signals. Here we propose to combine a genome-wide association study (GWAS) and FST -based appro
