Male Caregivers and Engagement in a Family Strengthening Program for Child Disruptive Behavior Disorders.

Awareness and interest in involving male caregivers in child mental health treatment has grown, especially for youth with disruptive behavior disorders like oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between male caregiver involvement and treatment engagement for child ODD. Children (n = 122) ages 7-11 and their caregivers participated in the 4 Rs 2 Ss Strengthening Families Program for child-onset ODD. Families were compared based on male caregiver presence. Families with a male caregiver were significantly more resourced with respect to inc

Adjunctive Parental Support Within Manualized Parent Training for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Parent training is a central focus of behavioral intervention, with emphasis on teaching parents to become change agents for their children by using behavioral management skills. However, its effectiveness is limited by a parent's ability to engage in the learning process. Parents managing external stressors, psychopathology, or poverty often do not gain the skills and thus, the treatment may minimally impacts parent and child behavior. In order to increase a parent's ability to acquire and implement new skills accurately, referred to as parent treatment integrity, the current study added a pa

Potential therapeutic uses of cannabinoids to treat behavioural problems in children and adolescents with developmental disorders.

BACKGROUND: There is a great deal of interest in the potential symptomatic benefits of medicinal cannabis among parents of children and adolescents with developmental disorders. OBJECTIVE: This article provides an overview of what is known about medicinal cannabis as a treatment for paediatric developmental disorders. DISCUSSION: While there is emerging evidence in support of medicinal cannabis for some adult mental health disorders, to date the evidence in children and adolescents is scant. Reports from uncontrolled observational studies suggest that cannabidiol-rich products may be helpful

Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder: Symptomatic and Syndromic Thresholds and Diagnostic Operationalization.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the most appropriate threshold for disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD) diagnosis and the impact of potential changes in diagnostic rules on prevalence levels in the community. METHOD: Trained psychologists evaluated 3,562 preadolescents/early adolescents from the 2004 Pelotas Birth Cohort with the Development and Well-Being Behavior Assessment (DAWBA). The clinical threshold was assessed in 3 stages: symptomatic, syndromic, and clinical operationalization. The symptomatic threshold identified the response category in each DAWBA item, which separates normative

Pharmacotherapy of disruptive behavior and item changes on a standardized rating scale: pooled analysis of risperidone effects in children with subaverage IQ.

BACKGROUND: Disruptive behavior disorders (DBDs), excluding attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), are characterized by a repetiti … oled for analysis. RESULTS: Risperidone produced improvement in both the Social Competence and the Problem Behavior N-CBRF subscales. Risperidone reduced symptoms in the Problem Behavior subscales (e.g., Conduct Problem, Insecure/Anxious) but also improved positive behaviors on the Social Competence subscales. Unlike most problem-behavior items, certain items ref …

Social influences on the acquisition of tool-using behaviors in tufted capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella).

To identify behaviors related to acquisition of tool-use in tufted capuchins (Cebus apella), we presented two tool-using tasks to two groups, extending findings by Westergaard and Fragaszy (1987) and Visalberghi (in press). Five Ss learned to use the tools in each task. The primary predictor of success was level of interest in the task. Observation of others at the apparatus did not facilitate exploratory behaviors or contact with the tools in the observers. Most animals performed exploratory behaviors more often when they were at the apparatus alone than when with another, whether or not the

Computer-based instruction to teach professionals in Nigeria to conduct pairwise functional analyses.

Efficient, low-cost approaches for disseminating evidence-based training on behavior-analytic interventions to professionals outside of North America are needed to address the scarcity of available services. This study evaluated the effectiveness and acceptability of computer-based instruction for training professionals in Nigeria to conduct pairwise functional analyses of challenging behavior. Six professionals demonstrated high levels of procedural fidelity during role-play and in situ sessions with children after completing a self-paced computer-based instruction program that provided multi

Problematic Sexual Behavior Among Children: A Meta-Analysis of Demographic and Clinical Correlates.

Problematic sexual behavior (PSB) are behaviors that involve sexual body parts and that are developmentally inappropriate or potentially harmful among children ages 12 and younger. PSB has been associated with different types of maltreatment as well as clinical difficulties, albeit inconsistently. The aim of this meta-analysis was to summarize the current research on correlates of PSB, specifically child demographic factors (i.e., gender, age), maltreatment history (i.e., childhood sexual abuse [CSA], childhood physical abuse [CPA]), and comorbid clinical symptoms (i.e., externalizing and inte

Prospective Prediction of First Onset of Nonsuicidal Self-Injury in Adolescent Girls.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescent nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a significant risk factor for suicidal behavior and an important clinical marker of psychopathology. NSSI is especially common in adolescent girls. A number of psychosocial correlates of adolescent NSSI have been identified, including problems characterized by disinhibition and negative affectivity. However, it is unknown whether these characteristics prospectively predict first-onset NSSI, limiting our understanding of its etiology and prevention. The current study addresses this gap in the literature. METHOD: Participants in the Adoles

Conduct problems in youth and the RDoC approach: A developmental, evolutionary-based view.

Problems related to aggression in young people are traditionally subsumed under the header of conduct problems, which include conduct disorder and oppositional defiant disorder. Such problems in children and adolescents are an important societal and mental health problem. In this paper we present an evolutionarily informed developmental psychopathology view of conduct problems inspired by the NIMH Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) initiative. We assume that while there are many pathways to conduct problems, chronic or temporary impairments in the domain of social cognition or mentalizing are a c

Emotion polyregulation in preschoolers: Links to negative affect and child adjustment.

This study examines preschoolers' use of multiple emotion regulation strategies (i.e., polyregulation) and their link to negative affect and adjustment. Fifty-seven children (51% girls; Mage = 4.26 years, SD = 1.04; 68% White, 7% Hispanic, 4% Asian, and 21% multiracial) participated in a laboratory frustration task in 2023. The number of strategies used (variety), the frequency of strategy change (switching), and the extent to which strategies were used with similar frequency (diversity) were used as indices of polyregulation. Younger preschoolers used less polyregulation than older children,

Childhood conduct problems and parent-child talk during social and nonsocial play contexts: a naturalistic home-based experiment.

Parent-child interactions are a critical pathway to emotion socialization, with disruption to these processes associated with risk for childhood behavior problems. Using computational linguistics methods, we tested whether (1) play context influenced parent-child socioemotional language, and (2) child conduct problems or callous-unemotional traits were associated with patterns of socioemotional or nonsocial language across contexts. Seventy-nine parent-child dyads (children, 5-6 years old) played a socioemotional skills ("social context") or math ("nonsocial context") game at home. We transcri

Exploring psychophysiological indices of disruptive behavior disorders and their subtypes of aggression.

BACKGROUND: Psychophysiological measures of arousal are often considered as potential biomarkers for disruptive behavior disorder (DBD). Nevertheless, the evidence is mixed, possibly reflecting the heterogeneity of DBD and different subtypes of aggression. Additionally, arousal measures of the central nervous system (e.g. electroencephalogram: EEG) are underrepresented compared to peripheral ones (heart rate: HR; skin conductance: SC). METHODS: We recorded HR, SC, and EEG (frequency band power at three electrodes Fz, Cz, Pz) in 49 participants with DBD, and 15 typically developing peers durin

Associations between autism symptom severity and mealtime behaviors in young children presented with an unfamiliar food.

BACKGROUND: Feeding problems are common in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and there are associations between parent reports of child ASD symptom severity and feeding problems. The current study further explores this association between ASD severity and family mealtime behaviors using directly observed naturalistic mealtime interactions. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Seventy-three children (Mage = 5.42 years) were presented an unfamiliar food during a videotaped but otherwise typical home meal. Mealtime behavior was assessed through coding of the videotaped meal using the Dyadic Inter

Psychosocial determinants of marijuana use among African American youth.

This study examines the psychosocial determinants of marijuana use among youth. A total of 7,488 African American middle and high school students from 133 metropolitan private and public schools completed a survey assessing psychosocial factors associated with annual marijuana use. The PRIDE survey, a nationally recognized survey on substance use, was used to assess the frequency of marijuana use and the influence of psychosocial factors on marijuana use among African American students. Results indicated that 18.5% of African American youth used marijuana in the past year. Males were significa

Hypnotically catalyzing experiential learning across treatments for depression: actions can speak louder than moods.

A number of psychotherapeutic approaches for the treatment of major depression have received empirical support in the literature, most notably cognitive-behavioral and interpersonal therapies. Recent studies have shown the therapeutic value of the behavioral activation component of such interventions. Depressed individuals actively learning and applying new skills on their own behalf is widely considered a critical component of recovery. This article describes the use of hypnosis to catalyze experiential learning and to encourage behavioral activation in the depressed client by directly addres

Symptom networks of internalizing and externalizing problems in children with leukemia: a network analysis and computer-simulated intervention study.

BACKGROUND: Children with leukemia commonly experience internalizing and externalizing problems, yet their symptom-level interactions remain unclear. Network analysis provides a framework to examine associations among co-occurring symptoms and to explore potential intervention-relevant targets within a system-level context. METHODS: A total of 1,126 children with leukemia in the rehabilitation phase were included. Emotional and behavioral problems were assessed using the parent-reported Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Symptom endorsement rates were calculated, and an Ising net

Commentary: Optimism and guidance for improving treatment effects among children with callous-unemotional traits - reflections on Perlstein et al. (2023).

Callous-unemotional (CU) traits have increasingly received attention as a potential predictor and outcome of treatment for children with conduct problems. The results of Perlstein et al. (2023) offer the first meta-analytic evidence against the long-held belief that CU traits confer treatment resistance. The results also suggest that children with conduct problems and CU traits require something more or different to achieve treatment outcomes commensurate with their conduct problems-only peers. In this commentary, I reflect on how treatment adaptations for children with conduct problems and CU
