A rabbit tooth-pulp assay to quantify efficacy and duration of antinociception by local anesthetics infiltrated into maxillary tissues.

The rabbit tooth-pulp assay is well established as a method for measuring the efficacy and potency of parenteral analgesic drugs. We describe a method for administration of local anesthetic drugs into the maxillary arch and subsequent measurements of antinociceptive action. It was possible to use two different methods of ED50 estimation and to provide measures of the potency, efficacy, and duration of local anesthetic drugs. These measurements corresponded with in vitro estimates of potency and duration and with intrinsic observations of the clinical actions.

[Selection of the most effective method of lateral subcutaneous sphincterotomy in the treatment of fissure in ano].

Under study were results of treatment of 203 patients with chronic anal fissures operated upon with the use of lateral subcutaneous sphincterotomy: 159 patients were subjected to the open variant of this operation, 44 patients--to the closed variant. An analysis of the results has shown advantages of the open technique of the lateral subcutaneous sphincterotomy.

Fluctuations in natural killer cell activity in early syphilis.

The natural killer cell activity was studied in 25 patients with primary, secondary, or latent syphilis before and after treatment. In primary syphilis natural killer cell activity was increased, especially in patients lacking circulating lipoidal antibodies. In patients who had become seroreactive in the lipoidal tests it was depressed in those with secondary and latent syphilis. The natural killer cell activity thus becomes activated by the syphilitic infection but is significantly reduced during progression of the disease. The importance of the natural killer cell activity in controlling sy

[Transfusion therapy as a method of correcting peripheral microcirculatory disorders in severe cranio-cerebral trauma].

Photoplethysmographic and capillaroscopic studies of peripheral microcirculation conducted in patients with severe craniocerebral injuries during the acute period revealed some regularities of its changes depending on the type of the transfusion medium. While transfusions of glucose-novocain mixtures and, especially, of low molecular weight dextrans increase the volume pulse and improve the capillary flow in patients with supratentorial pathology, and blood and plasma transfusions reduce the volume pulse and enhance the capillary disorders, patients with brain stem insufficiency display a reve

[Medical and surgical management of chronic pancreatitis (author's transl)].

Chronic pancreatitis has to be treated in the first line by medical means. Dietary procedures, absolute abstinence from alcohol, compensation of malabsorption and treatment of diabetes will do in most cases. Surgery is indicated in cases resistent to this form of therapy of when complications arise (cysts, persistent jaundice, portal hypertension). The patient has to be given high caloric parenteral nutrition preoperatively. Pancreato-jejunostomy with an Y shaped loop and surgical removal of various amounts of pancreatic tissue are the only efficient surgical procedures. In cases of dilatation

Impulse conduction in the myelinated giant fibers of the earthworm. Structure and function of the dorsal nodes in the median giant fiber.

The dorsal openings in the myelin sheath of the median giant fiber (MGF) of the earthworm (Lumbricus terrestris L.) have been studied with electronmicroscopical and electrophysiological methods. The fine structure of the dorsal nodes (DN) resembles in many aspects the Ranvier nodes in vertebrate and crustacean nerve fibers. The nodal membrane directly faces the extracellular collagenous capsule of the ventral cord and displays a conspicuous electrondense undercoat. The myelin sheath of the paranode shows a characteristic differentiation into large desmosomal contracts. Recordings of the transm

Malignant hyperpyrexia.

Malignant hyperpyrexia is a dangerous complication of general anesthesia occurring in individuals with an underlying disease of muscle. The essential clinical features of the syndrome are a drastic and sustained rise in body temperature, metabolic acidosis, and widespread muscular rigidity. The results of experiments on susceptible pigs and in vitro studies of human muscle have shown that all the clinical features of the syndrome can be explained by a raised level of calcium ions in the myoplasm. This is caused by a massive and sudden release of calcium into the myoplasm from the calcium-stori
