To determine the effect of iron status on the seizure threshold, measures of iron sufficiency were prospectively evaluated in 51 children presenting to a pediatric emergency department with a febrile illness with (26) or without (25) an associated febrile seizure. Eleven patients from the West Bank village of Es-Sawiyeh were admitted with lead poisoning to two Jerusalem hospitals between November 1982 and January 1983. The importance of disturbances of porphyrin metabolism in solar urticaria is discussed. 15 cases of porphyrias with sun sensitivity are presented comprising 5 cases of erythropoietic protoporhyria, 8 cases of coproporphyria hereditaria and 2 cases of porphyria variegata, 9 out of these 10 patients presented neuroabdominal symptoms and in 4 cases contraceptive pills have triggered the disease. Due to the risk of severe forms of disease sometimes drugs induced porphyrias must be considered in all cases of solar urticaria and a correct laboratory study done in the suspected cases.

Acute lead encephalopathy has become a rare syndrome in the United States. Early recognition of the disease, with institution of specific chelation therapy, is critical in order to minimize mortality and morbidity. Lead intoxication, however, may mimic other more common diseases. We report an 8-year-old child with known sickle cell anemia who presented initially with findings suggestive of vaso-occlusive crisis but who deteriorated rapidly and was found to have severe lead poisoning. We present her hospital course and review the management of lead encephalopathy in detail.

OBJECTIVE: The effectiveness of four different photosensitizers for intracranial photodynamic therapy (PDT) of normal brain tissues and an intracranial tumor was investigated in rabbits, using the photodynamic threshold model.
SUMMARY: PDT is currently being investigated as an adjuvant treatment to surgical resection and/or radio chemotherapy of intracranial neoplasms.
