Differential effects of ambivalent visual-vestibular-somatosensory stimulation on the perception of self-motion.

The direction of perceived self-motion was determined as a function of combined visual-vestibular and vestibulo-somatosensory stimulations about the earth's vertical z-axis by means of a rotary chair and drum system. The predominant influence of concurrent antagonistic vestibular stimulation on circular vection (CV) even at small accelerations has been demonstrated by several studies in the past. The results of the present paper do not confirm the generally assumed influence of the vestibular system on exocentric motion perception, but instead produce evidence of the dominance of the visual ch

Sequential dependences of perceptual interpretations of a repetitively illuminated reversible figure.

The Necker cube pattern was illuminated by xenon flashes repetitively at different but always regular interstimulus intervals. Subjects pushed one of two buttons corresponding to the subjective perceptual interpretation of the pattern. Analysis of the resulting binary sequences showed that none of the sequences was random. The order of Markovian dependence was higher for sequences with longer (3.6 and 2.4 s) interstimulus intervals than for shorter (1.2 s) ones. This result points to the significance of perceptual sets related to short-term memory mechanism upon perception.

Impaired perception of isoluminant contrast modulation stimuli: Evidence for a magnocellular pathway mechanism.

Contrast modulation (CM) stimuli have been previously used to reveal nonlinear contributions of Y-like retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) such as parasol cells to cortical responses and perception. To test whether CMs are selectively processed within the magnocellular pathway, we assessed envelope motion discrimination and detection for achromatic (yellow-black) and chromatic (red-green) CMs in the presence of luminance masking noise to disrupt luminance-based mechanisms of motion processing. Compared to achromatic CMs, perception of chromatic CMs was more sensitive to luminance masking noise, sugg

Peripheral crowding is invariant under different luminance levels.

Peripheral crowding is the difficulty in recognizing objects in cluttered peripheral vision, affecting tasks like reading, visual search, and driving. The luminance of the environment also plays a significant role in these tasks. However, the potential interaction between crowding and luminance is still not clear. This study examined peripheral crowding (10 deg) by measuring its magnitude and critical spacing across a wide range of luminance levels, spanning from scotopic to photopic conditions. Ten participants binocularly identified the orientation of a target presented alone or flanked by f

The Simplest Chronoscope V: A Theory of Dual Primary and Secondary Reaction Time Systems.

Extending work by Montare, visual simple reaction time, choice reaction time, discriminative reaction time, and overall reaction time scores obtained from college students by the simplest chronoscope (a falling meterstick) method were significantly faster as well as significantly less variable than scores of the same individuals from electromechanical reaction timers (machine method). Results supported the existence of dual reaction time systems: an ancient primary reaction time system theoretically activating the V5 parietal area of the dorsal visual stream that evolved to process significant

Different time scales of motion integration for anticipatory smooth pursuit and perceptual adaptation.

When repeatedly exposed to moving stimuli, the oculomotor system elicits anticipatory smooth pursuit (ASP) eye movements, even before the stimulus moves. ASP is affected oppositely to perceptual speed judgments of repetitive moving stimuli: After a sequence of fast stimuli, ASP velocity increases, whereas perceived speed decreases. These two effects--perceptual adaptation and oculomotor priming--could result from adapting a single common internal speed representation that is used for perceptual comparisons and for generating ASP. Here we test this hypothesis by assessing the temporal dependenc

Noise and adaptation in multistable perception: noise drives when to switch, adaptation determines percept choice.

We study the dynamics of perceptual switching in ambiguous visual scenes that admit more than two interpretations/percepts to gain insight into the dynamics of perceptual multistability and its underlying neural mechanisms. We focus on visual plaids that are tristable and we present both experimental and computational results. We develop a firing-rate model based on mutual inhibition and adaptation that involves stochastic dynamics of multiple-attractor systems. The model can account for the dynamic properties (transition probabilities, distributions of percept durations, etc.) observed in the

Adaptation to a spatial offset occurs independently of the flash-drag effect.

Visual motion can influence the perceived position of an object. For example, in the flash-drag effect, the position of a stationary flashed object at one location appears to shift in the direction of motion presented at another location in the visual field (Whitney & Cavanagh, 2000). The results of previous physiological studies suggest interactions between motion and position information in very early retinotopic areas. However, it is unclear whether the position information that has been distorted by motion further influences the visual processing stage at which adaptable position mechanism

Local image statistics: maximum-entropy constructions and perceptual salience.

The space of visual signals is high-dimensional and natural visual images have a highly complex statistical structure. While many studies suggest that only a limited number of image statistics are used for perceptual judgments, a full understanding of visual function requires analysis not only of the impact of individual image statistics, but also, how they interact. In natural images, these statistical elements (luminance distributions, correlations of low and high order, edges, occlusions, etc.) are intermixed, and their effects are difficult to disentangle. Thus, there is a need for constru

Object recognition during foveating eye movements.

We studied how saccadic and smooth pursuit eye movements affect the recognition of briefly presented letters appearing within the eye movement target. First we compared the recognition performance during steady-state pursuit and during fixation. Single letters were presented for seven different durations ranging from 10 to 400 ms and four contrast levels ranging from 5% to 40%. For both types of eye movements the recognition rates increased with duration and contrast, but they were on average 11% lower during pursuit. In daily life humans use a combination of saccadic and smooth pursuit eye mo

Proprioceptive localization of the left and right hands.

The present study examined the accuracy of proprioceptive localization of the hand using two paradigms. In our proprioceptive estimation paradigm, participants judged the position of a target hand relative to visual references, or their body's midline. Placement of the target hand was active (participants pushed a robot manipulandum along a constrained path) or passive (the robot manipulandum positioned participants' target hand). In our proprioceptive-guided reaching paradigm, participants reached to the unseen location of a hand; both the left and right hands served as the target hand and th

Shift of temporal responsivity curve of pattern reversal visually evoked potentials to lower frequencies in patients after recovery from optic neuritis.

PURPOSE: To investigate the responsivity of the visual system to pattern reversal stimuli of different reversal rates in optic neuritis patients after a full recovery of visual acuity. METHODS: Thirty eyes with optic neuritis and 30 eyes of age-matched normal controls were studied. Steady-state pattern reversal visually evoked potentials (P-VEPs) were recorded using reversal rates of 2, 10, 20 and 30 Hz. The relationship between the amplitudes of the P-VEPs and reversal rate was analysed. The temporal responsivity curves of the two groups were compared. RESULTS: The means ± standard deviatio

Hypothalamus and amygdala response to acupuncture stimuli in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Brain processing of acupuncture stimuli in chronic neuropathic pain patients may underlie its beneficial effects. We used fMRI to evaluate verum and sham acupuncture stimulation at acupoint LI-4 in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) patients and healthy controls (HC). CTS patients were retested after 5 weeks of acupuncture therapy. Thus, we investigated both the short-term brain response to acupuncture stimulation, as well as the influence of longer-term acupuncture therapy effects on this short-term response. CTS patients responded to verum acupuncture with greater activation in the hypothalamus an

Intercepting free falling objects: better use Occam's razor than internalize Newton's law.

Several studies have recently provided empirical data supporting the view that gravity has been embodied in a quantitative internal model of gravity thereby permitting access to exact time-to-contact (TTC) when intercepting a free falling object. In this review, we discuss theoretical and methodological concerns with the experiments that supposedly support the assumption of a predictive and accurate model of gravity. Having done so, we then propose that only a "qualitative implicit physics knowledge" of the effects of gravity is used as an approximate pre-information that influences timing of

The priority heuristic: making choices without trade-offs.

Bernoulli's framework of expected utility serves as a model for various psychological processes, including motivation, moral sense, attitudes, and decision making. To account for evidence at variance with expected utility, the authors generalize the framework of fast and frugal heuristics from inferences to preferences. The priority heuristic predicts (a) the Allais paradox, (b) risk aversion for gains if probabilities are high, (c) risk seeking for gains if probabilities are low (e.g., lottery tickets), (d) risk aversion for losses if probabilities are low (e.g., buying insurance), (e) risk s

Passive perception of odors and semantic circuits.

The sense of smell has been traditionally assumed to be different from other sensory modalities in that odors are encoded perceptually, without a semantic component. Recent findings of improved odor memory upon encoding with verbal cues question this view. Furthermore, familiar odors are easier to remember and discriminate than are unfamiliar ones, and odor familiarity is reported to predict odor naming. To investigate whether familiar odors are processed by different cerebral structures than those that process unfamiliar odors, (15)O H(2)O-positron emission tomography (PET) measurements of ce

Object recognition is mediated by extraretinal information.

Many previous studies of object recognition have found view-dependent recognition performance when view changes are produced by rotating objects relative to a stationary viewing position. However, the assumption that an object rotation is equivalent to an observer viewpoint change ignores the potential contribution of extraretinal information that accompanies observer movement. In four experiments, we investigated the role of extraretinal information on real-world object recognition. As in previous studies focusing on the recognition of spatial layouts across view changes, observers performed

Neural and perceptual adjustments to dim light.

At reduced luminance levels, the visual system integrates light over extended periods of time. Although the general effects of this process are known, specific changes in the visual cortex have not been identified. We have studied the physiological changes that occur during a transition from high to low luminance by measurements of single neurons in the cat's primary visual cortex. Under low-luminance conditions, we find increased latencies, expanded temporal responses, and a loss of temporal structure. This results in temporal-frequency tuning curves that are peaked at relatively low frequenc

A motion sickness maximum around the 0.2 Hz frequency range of horizontal translational oscillation.

BACKGROUND: Low frequency translational oscillation can provoke motion sickness in land vehicles, ships and aircraft. Although controlled motion experiments indicate a progressive increase in nauseogenicity as frequency decreases toward 0.2 Hz, few data are available on the existence of a definite maximum nauseogenic potential of motion around 0.2 Hz, or decreased nauseogenicity below this frequency. HYPOTHESIS: Nauseogenicity should be maximal around 0.2 Hz. METHODS: We selected 12 subjects for high motion sickness susceptibility, and they were exposed to horizontal sinusoidal motion (1.0 m

Sustained isocapnic hypoxia suppresses the perception of the magnitude of inspiratory resistive loads.

The sensation of increased respiratory resistance or effort is likely to be important for the initiation of alerting or arousal responses, particularly in sleep. Hypoxia, through its central nervous system-depressant effects, may decrease the perceived magnitude of respiratory loads. To examine this, we measured the effect of isocapnic hypoxia on the ability of 10 normal, awake males (mean age = 24.0 +/- 1.8 yr) to magnitude-scale five externally applied inspiratory resistive loads (mean values from 7.5 to 54.4 cmH(2)O. l(-1). s). Each subject scaled the loads during 37 min of isocapnic hypoxi
