Blood flow velocities and pulsatory indices in both renal arteries (RAs) and in the internal carotid artery (CAI) were measured by pulsed Doppler ultrasonography in ten preterm infants with patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), before and after surgical ligation. The results obtained in the RAs were compared to those found in a reference group of 22 stable preterm infants. In the RAs the diastolic steal volume of the PDA led to a marked decrease in diastolic blood flow velocity (range 3 to -23 cm/s). Seven infants showed retrograde diastolic flow, whereas only three infants had these flow patterns i

A 35-year-old pregnant woman was referred to our institution at 33 weeks' gestation for evaluation of a fetal abdominal tumor. B-mode ultrasonography demonstrated a massive lesion. Bidirectional power Doppler mode showed abundant blood flow surrounding the tumor. On superb micro-vascular imaging, various Doppler signal patterns were observed within the tumor, including diffuse fine dotted-like signals, linear flow, and internal shunt flow. Sequential observations of the tumor and cardiac cycles also revealed pulsatile flow beneath the edges of the tumor and continuous fine flow in the central …

Wall shear stress (WSS) disturbances are commonly expressed at sites of abnormal flow obstructions and may play an essential role in the pathogenesis of various vascular diseases. In laminar flows these disturbances have recently been assessed by the transverse wall shear stress (transWSS), which accounts for the WSS multidirectionality. Site-specific estimations of WSS disturbances in pulsatile transitional and turbulent type of flows are more challenging due to continuous and unpredictable changes in WSS behavior. In these complex flow settings, the transWSS may serve as a more comprehensive

The anterior communicating artery (AComA) is a key collateral pathway in the Circle of Willis. This study investigated the effects of bilateral inflows and vascular geometry on hemodynamics using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations derived from magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) data in four subjects. Flow rates were measured using phase-contrast MRA (1.5T Siemens) at major anterior circulation segments. CFD models incorporated rigid walls, pulsatile flow, and MRA-derived inlet waveform curves under laminar, incompressible assumptions. Simulated internal carotid artery velocities …

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Pioneering preclinical work reported by Peter Maroko and Eugene Braunwald in 1971 identified oxygen supply and demand are primary determinants of myocardial infarct size in the setting of a heart attack. Since the 1950s, advances in mechanical engineering led to the development of short-term circulatory support devices that range from pulsatile to continuous flow pumps. The primary objective of these pumps is to reduce native heart work, enhance coronary blood flow, and sustain systemic perfusion. Whether the

In this paper, we have analysed pulsatile flow through partially occluded elastic arteries, to determine the haemodynamic parameters of wall shear stress (WSS), wall pressure gradient and pressure drops (ΔP), contributing to enhanced flow resistance and myocardial ischaemic regions which impair cardiac contractility and cause increased work load on the heart. In summary, it can be observed that stenoses in an artery significantly influence the haemodynamic parameters of wall shear stress and pressure drop in contrast to dilatations case. This deduces that stenosis plays a more critical role in…

PURPOSE: To measure parameters of the cardiac cycle-induced pulsatile light absorption signal (plethysmography signal) of the optic nerve head (ONH) and to compare parameters between normal subjects and patients with different stages of glaucoma.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A recently developed video ophthalmoscope was used to acquire short video sequences (10 s) of the ONH. After image registration and trend correction, the pulsatile changing light absorption at the ONH tissue (excluding large vessels) was calculated. The changing light absorption depends on the pulsatile changing blood volume. Va

Innominate artery occlusion is a rare condition that can cause symptoms in the anterior cerebral circulation, vertebrobasilar system and upper extremity, while it can also be asymptomatic. We report the Doppler ultrasound and digital subtraction angiography (DSA) findings of the right subclavian artery and right common carotid artery flow by retrograde flow from the ipsilateral vertebral artery due to innominate artery occlusion. We aimed to discuss the results of primary stenting together with the technical and clinical success.

BACKGROUND: Perfusion index (PI) could reflect peripheral flow. Preterm infants with hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus (hsPDA) will have left-to-right shunt across PDA causing less blood flow to the lower legs.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate pre- and postductal PI differences (ΔPI) in hsPDA.
METHODS: Preterm infants with gestational age <34 weeks were assessed for ΔPI on days 1, 3, and 7 of life with simultaneous echocardiography. Based on echocardiography, each infant was categorized into hsPDA, non-hsPDA, and no PDA.
RESULTS: Thirty infants (16 males), median age 31 weeks (inte

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies have linked abnormal aortic medial pathology to progressive aortic root dilatation in patients with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). To explore whether the aortic medial pathology in TOF is linked to aortic mechanical property, the present study tested the hypothesis that the distribution of impaired aortic elasticity corresponds to the known distribution of abnormal medial pathology (confined to the ascending aorta) in TOF.
METHODS: Pulse wave velocity (PWV) of the proximal and distal aortas was measured with a high-fidelity micromanometer in 98 TOF patients (64 with rep

The study was aimed at investigating the arterial stiffness assessed by aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV) in the presence of primary hyperparathyroidism (PH), with and without concomitant hypertension. Subsequently, we examined the effect of parathyroidectomy (PTX) on arterial stiffness. A total of 28 patients with PH and concomitant hypertension, and 16 with PH without hypertension were investigated in comparison with 28 essential hypertensive patients and 18 healthy controls, respectively. Patients were matched for age, blood pressure (BP), body mass index, lipid profile and fasting glucose.

Resistive index (RI) and pulsatility index (PI) are indirect measurements of blood flow resistance that may be measured by pulsed wave Doppler ultrasonography. Chemical restrain may potentially alter the indices although it is required to perform ultrasonography in some patients. The purpose of this study was to describe values for both intrarenal and ocular RI and PI within the same subject in clinically normal dogs sedated with a midazolam and butorphanol combination and evaluate if there are any significant changes between sedated and nonsedated dogs. Fifteen healthy Beagle dogs were studie

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Transcranial Doppler (TCD) sonography is useful to evaluate intracranial arteries, however, interpretation of the TCD results in anterior cerebral artery (ACA) is difficult because of hypoplasia or aplasia. We try to define useful TCD indices and cut-off values to determine the variations of ACA.
METHODS: Consecutive patients who underwent TCD and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) were included. Patients with cerebrovascular abnormality or inadequate temporal windows were excluded. ACA status was classified as normal (NL), hypoplasia (HP), and aplasia (AP) according

Transverse aortic banding in mice is commonly used to produce pressure overload, but the resulting cardiac hypertrophy is variable and the actual load produced is unknown. The purposes of the study were to characterize peripheral blood flow in banded mice using noninvasive Doppler methods, investigate whether changes in flow could predict the amount of cardiac hypertrophy induced and validate the simplified Bernoulli equation for estimating the pressure drop across the stenosis in very small vessels. Wild-type mice underwent aortic banding (n=15) or sham operation (n=6). Doppler velocity was m

Routine dilatation and curettage (D&C) in all patients with postmenopausal bleeding (PMB) is debatable, as 70%-80% will eventually receive benign diagnoses. Endometrial thickness (ET) measurements by transvaginal ultrasonography (TVUS) are used with high sensitivity to detect patients who would benefit from D&C, yet they suffer from low specificity that fails to reduce undue invasive procedures. The aim of this study was to define optimal cutoffs for ET in diagnosing endometrial pathologies in PMB and to assess a possible complementary role for Doppler ultrasonography. OBJECTIVE: Idiopathic hydramnios is an independent risk factor for perinatal morbidity and mortality, although the precise mechanism is unknown. Hydramnios may alter oxygen delivery to the human fetus. The middle cerebral artery (MCA) pulsatility index (PI) is a sensitive parameter for detection of blood flow redistribution or centralization. The aim of this study was to determine whether idiopathic hydramnios is associated with changes in the PI of the MCA and the umbilical artery (UA).
DESIGN: The PI of the MCA and UA were determined prospectively in 113 consecutive pregnant women with sing
